From victim to voice: Sadanandan Master nominated to Rajya Sabha

Time of India2 days ago
In May 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing a rally in Kasaragod, raised the hand of C Sadanandan Master—a powerful moment that broke, in his words, the 'silence' surrounding a victim of political violence. At the rally, Modi spoke of the brutal attack on Master, a school teacher from a family of committed CPM members, who had embraced the RSS's philosophy of cultural nationalism after being influenced by poet Akkitham's writings. Branded a traitor by his comrades, he was targeted in 1994 when both his legs were hacked off, mutilated beyond repair to prevent reattachment.
On Sunday, nine years after that symbolic moment in Kasaragod, the Prime Minister gave Master's story national visibility once again—this time by nominating him to the Rajya Sabha. The announcement resonated deeply with lakhs of RSS members and sympathisers, for whom Master's resilience has long been a source of inspiration.
The 30-year-old victim of that savage assault did not surrender to intimidation. Known widely as 'Master' or 'Maashay', Sadanandan returned to teaching and public life on prosthetic legs and remained a determined opponent of the CPM in its strongholds like Kannur. He continued to champion the Hindutva cause but, importantly, stood firmly against political violence.

Now serving as the vice president of the BJP's Kerala unit,
Sadanandan Master
has consistently spoken out against the use of violence in political and ideological conflicts. 'The psychology of violence is that of action and reaction. I am a victim of political violence, and I have always maintained that in my individual capacity, I am willing to take on any role to end this violence,' he told The Times of India in 2016.
Master contested unsuccessfully on a BJP ticket from Koothuparambu in Kannur district in both the 2016 and 2021 Kerala assembly elections. Yet, for 31 years, he has lived with the scars of the assault that changed his life. In that 1994 attack, his limbs were severed and crushed on the road to prevent surgical reattachment—leaving him in agony but undeterred in spirit.
Live Events
The PM's nomination of Sadanandan was not the only gesture on Sunday that stirred celebration within the broader ideological circle. Historian Meenakshi Jain, too, was named to the Rajya Sabha—an appointment that signals Modi's continued support for voices that challenged established Left narratives.
Jain has been one of the few academics to confront the dominant Marxist interpretation of Indian history, often facing resistance and ridicule in elite academic circles. But she found a following among Hindutva thinkers and supporters for her work on the destruction of temples during the medieval period—an area often ignored by mainstream scholarship. Her works, including Flight of Deities and Rebirth of Temples, The Battle for Rama: Case of the Temple at Ayodhya, and Rama and Ayodhya, reflect the persistence with which she pursued her research interests.
Also nominated was
Ujjwal Nikam
, the public prosecutor best known for securing the death penalty for Ajmal Kasab in the 26/11 case and for arguing the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case. Though not directly linked to the RSS, Nikam's selection appears to honour individuals whose work aligns with national interest as understood by the Modi government.
Likewise, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, a career diplomat and former foreign secretary during Modi 2.0, was also nominated. Shringla was once seen as a frontrunner for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 elections, but the party ultimately chose to retain the sitting MP. While the PM deferred to that decision at the time, Shringla evidently remained on his radar.
Sadanandan Master's life—from a Leftist background to becoming a dedicated RSS karyakarta—epitomises resilience and quiet service. His nomination to the Rajya Sabha serves as a recognition not only of personal sacrifice but of steadfast commitment to ideology and democratic engagement—even in the face of extreme adversity.

Should ghosts vote in Bihar, BJP asks Rahul

Patna: The BJP has taken a swipe at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his criticism of the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. BJP state spokesperson Neeraj Kumar on Wednesday questioned the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, asking whether he wanted "bhoot-pret" (ghosts) to vote in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. While addressing a rally in Assam on Wednesday, Rahul alleged that a new voter list was being prepared in Bihar by removing the names of lakhs of people. "I want to warn the people of Assam that what they (BJP) did in Maharashtra and what they are trying to do in Bihar, they will try to do the same in Assam as well. It is the responsibility of all of you and us that we do not let them do this," Rahul said. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI) report released on Wednesday, more than 35 lakh (35,69,435) of the total 7.90 crore voters in Bihar were not found at their addresses. "Probably 12,55,620 (1.59%) of them were deceased electors and 17,37,336 (2.2%) have probably shifted permanently so far," the ECI stated. The BJP's Neeraj claimed the Congress and RJD wanted even the dead to vote. "The names of those who have died in the last 22 years are still present in the voter list. Should the ECI not remove their names? Does Congress want infiltrators and illegal citizens to vote too? Congress wants to win elections with the help of fake voters," Neeraj alleged. "Article 326 makes it clear that only Indian citizens have the right to vote. But Congress is constantly opposing constitutional institutions," he said. BJP ally HAM(S) national president and minister Santosh Suman also criticised the RJD, claiming they had no remorse for the 15 years of jungle raj and were once again trying to scare the people of Bihar to garner votes.

India-US trade deal: India wants Donald Trump administration to offer tariff rate lower than Indonesia; eyes competitive advantage

A negotiating team is in Washington for another round of trade deal talks, with both nations working towards finalizing a tariff rate below 20%. (AI image) India-US trade deal: US President Donald Trump has said that America is eyeing market access into India, on the same lines as the one Indonesia has granted it as part of the trade deal. However, India is looking to seal a trade deal with the US that entails tariff rates lower than the one imposed on Indonesia. On Tuesday, Trump announced an agreement with Indonesia that reduces the tariff rate from 32% - threatened in the tariff letter - to 19%. 'We made a deal with Indonesia. I spoke to their really great we made the deal. We have full access to Indonesia, everything. As you know, Indonesia is very strong on copper, but we have full access to everything. We will pay no tariffs. They are giving us access into Indonesia, which we never had. That's probably the biggest part of the is basically working along that same line,' Trump told reporters. Our people couldn't go in and now we're getting access because of what we're doing with the tariffs…,' he added. India-US Trade Deal: What Will Be The Tariff Rate? According to a Bloomberg report, Indian officials are working to negotiate a trade agreement with the Trump administration, aiming to secure a more favourable tariff rate than Indonesia's deal before the August 1, 2025 deadline. India is looking at tariff rates more advantageous than both Indonesia's agreement and Vietnam's proposed 20% tariff, officials were quoted as saying. Currently, a negotiating team is in Washington for another round of trade deal talks, with both nations working towards finalizing a tariff rate below 20%. Indian officials believe their position warrants preferential treatment compared to regional counterparts. They maintain that the US distinguishes India from Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries, which are often viewed as transhipment hubs. Current negotiations suggest India might receive more beneficial tariff terms than these nations, a source familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. Soumya Kanti Ghosh, who serves as the chief economist at State Bank of India, and is part of the prime minister's Economic Advisory Council, indicated that negotiations aim to reduce the tariff to under 10%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Successful Way of Intraday Trading is "Market Profile" TradeWise Learn More Undo "And in the bargain, the US will expect significant concessions for its goods when they decide to enter India," he said. India maintains its stance against opening up its agricultural and dairy sectors, though it might offer concessions in other industrial segments, Ghosh was quoted as saying. The Indian government has put forward a proposal to eliminate tariffs on US industrial products, provided the US reciprocates similarly. Additionally, New Delhi has extended improved market access for select US agricultural products and has suggested increasing its purchases of Boeing Co. aircraft. Trump's Trade Deals Trump has secured trade agreements with the UK and Vietnam, alongside a truce with China, and now Indonesia. The agreement with Jakarta includes commitments to purchase US energy worth $15 billion, agricultural products valued at $4.5 billion, and Boeing aircraft. The US President has sent out tariff letters to over 20 countries warning of new reciprocal tariff rates effective August 1, 2025. According to Brian Tan, an economist at Barclays Plc in Singapore, tariff rates are settling between 15%-20%, aligning with Trump's preferred range. He suggests that the tariff notifications to trading partners serve as a strategic approach to encourage improved offers for the US, enabling the administration to achieve more advantageous agreements. The Star reported that Malaysia's trade minister is awaiting details of the Indonesia agreement whilst continuing negotiations with the US regarding their tariffs. Tengku Zafrul, minister of investment, trade and industry, emphasised in the newspaper: "Most importantly, we must ensure that this is a negotiation beneficial to both countries. It must be win-win." Vadhavan Port will be a game changer; it will connect to 24 districts through Samruddhi Mahamarg: CM

The Vadhavan Port will be a game changer as it will connect 24 districts through Samruddhi Mahamarg, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday. The CM made these observations after inaugurating the Maharashtra Maritime Summit held in Mumbai to discuss and debate ideas to further strengthen the state's maritime sector. The summit began with Nitesh Rane, Minister for Ports and Fisheries, outlining his vision and roadmap for developing the state's ports, equipping the youth with necessary skills to qualify for jobs that will be created with this development. 'The formation of the Maritime Acceleration Task Force will help take forward the various initiatives, ' Rane said. Earlier, Fadnavis explained the benefits that infrastructure developed, and the upcoming Vadhavan Port will bring to Maharashtra. 'The Vadhavan Port, when ready, will be connected to 24 districts of the state via the Samruddhi highway and various access roads. The port will also have an offshore airport to accelerate the movement of cargo,' he said. The various panels, with experts from the maritime business, debated the benefits of bringing ship building and ship breaking industries to Maharashtra, the state's maritime policy and the future of water transport using the waterways. The panelists discussed the potential that Maharashtra holds with Indian shipbuilders looking outside the country for collaboration in technology and foreign companies looking for opportunities in India. Panelists included representatives from leading players in the business–Adani Ports, Damen Shipyards, Haskoning, Thyssenkrup Marines Systems, JSW Infra, DP World, Rural Enhancers Group, Indigo Seaways and Candela. Diplomats of various countries attended the summit, showcasing the international interest in forging business ties with Maharashtra. The political leaders reiterated Maharashtra 's commitment to developing the maritime sector. While Minister Rane urged various stakeholders to collaborate, Chief Minister Fadnavis assured the speakers that their deliberations would be seriously considered in the state's maritime policies.
