"I am also a sufferer": VP Dhankhar echoes CJI Gavai's call for adherence to official protocol
Speaking at the launch of the book 'The Constitution We Adopted', edited by Senior Advocate Vijay Hansaria, the Vice President said, 'This morning I was reminded of something which is very critical in the country and that is not for oneself. What the present Chief Justice said--we must believe in protocol.'
Referring to recent developments, Dhankhar said, 'Chief Justice of the country and protocol is placed very high. When he indicated this, it was not personal, it was for the position he holds, and I am sure this will be kept in mind by one and all.'
Chief Justice of India Bushan Gavai made the original remarks on Sunday during a felicitation ceremony organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in Mumbai's Dadar.
CJI Gavai said, 'When the Chief Justice of any state visits for the first time, the CP and DG come and meet them. But when told that I came to Mumbai, they didn't come to meet me. I don't want to get into this small thing, but there is some protocol.'
VP Dhankar said, 'In a sense, I am also a sufferer. You have seen the photograph of the President and the Prime Minister but not of the Vice-President. Once I demit the office, I'll ensure that my successor has a photograph. But I am really beholden to the present Chief Justice for inviting attention to the people in bureaucracy, adherence to protocol is fundamental.'
Meanwhile, Congress leader Udit Raj criticised the absence of senior state officials at the felicitation event, calling it an insult to CJI Gavai and a Dalit holding a top constitutional post.
Speaking to ANI, Udit Raj said, 'The Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa organised a felicitation event for CJI Gavai, who is from Maharashtra. It was his first visit after becoming the Chief Justice of India, but the Chief Secretary and DGP were not present. This is a serious breach of protocol. Gavai always speaks about the Constitution, which has three pillars -- the legislature, executive and judiciary -- and the judiciary is led by the Chief Justice. The absence of these top officials is an insult to a Dalit holding such a high post. BJP cannot support Dalits. Modi ji and the Chief Minister should apologise to the people of the country.'
He added, 'CJI Gavai may not have taken it seriously, but we do. This is an insult to the Constitution and to a Dalit. BJP is the B-team when it comes to Dalit issues. They cannot tolerate a Dalit in such a top position.'
He demanded action against the officials, saying, 'The DG Police and Chief Secretary should be removed from their posts for not attending the CJI's event.' (ANI)

However, on Sunday, both were seen together visiting flood-hit regions in the Seraj Assembly constituency. During a press conference on Friday, Thakur had refused to comment on Ranaut's absence, saying he wouldn't speak about someone who seemed unconcerned with the people. In response, the MP accused him of advicing her not to visit the area until road connectivity was restored. On Saturday, Ranaut wrote on her X account about her scheduled Sunday visit to the affected areas. Ranaut on Sunday reiterated her Himachali and Pahadi identity. 'As a Member of Parliament, my responsibility is to secure funds and convey the ground reality to the government. I don't have an independent fund, officers, or a cabinet. I may not always be visible, but I'm a Himachali, a Pahadi, and I am here for my people,' she said. Taking a dig at the Congress government in the state, Ranaut alleged rampant corruption in the state administration. 'Even in the past, when the Centre sent thousands of crores in disaster aid, the state government misused those. I fear the same might happen again,' she said. 'We must find a way to ensure that relief directly reaches the affected families.' Speaking to the media, she highlighted the damage caused by the cloudburst. 'Thunag and surrounding areas have been severely hit. Roads are destroyed, and connectivity is disrupted. Our government and the administration are closely monitoring the situation, and relief operations are underway,' she said. She added that the Centre responded swiftly by deploying the Army for rescue and relief efforts. 'Though the Prime Minister is on a foreign tour, he is fully aware of the situation on the ground, and the central government has swung into action,' she said. The flood-like conditions in Thunag have left several villages isolated. Restoration of road connectivity remains a key challenge for the authorities. Ranaut and Thakur jointly assessed the damage, especially in Thunag town, where the fomer met with affected residents and expressed solidarity. She assured victims of all possible assistance from the Centre. 'I will demand a special relief package from the central government and advocate for the rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected families,' she said.

Kerala tourism minister PA Mohammed Riyas stated on Sunday that the Left-led state government and its ministers would never "knowingly" extend invitations or offer support to individuals involved in espionage. His remarks came in response to questions about BJP leader K Surendran's claim that social media influencer Jyoti Malhotra, arrested in May for allegedly spying for Pakistan, had been invited to Kerala as part of a tourism promotion campaign. Surendran, in a post on the social media platform X, referred to an RTI reply confirming Malhotra's invitation and questioned why "a Pak-linked spy's trip" was funded by Kerala Tourism. The BJP leader had previously made similar allegations on X. Rejecting these claims, Riyas stated that the government and its ministers would never knowingly invite a spy to the state and added that they were not afraid of such propaganda. He also denied any "rift" between the two state units. "Delhi is getting involved in a guidance role. When elections take place, it is the party that goes for polls not the government. Sensing it is in a difficult position in Punjab, where its maiden term will end in March 2027 followed by the assembly election, the AAP has launched various initiatives, including one against the drug menace, an emotive issue here.
