Lawsuit against Broncos' UDFA signee Clay Webb dismissed
When the Denver Broncos agreed to terms with undrafted free agent Clay Webb last month, it appeared that he was joining the club despite an unresolved lawsuit from 2020.
Webb was accused of grotesque bullying, with the lawsuit's plaintiff saying they drank from a Powerade bottle that contained Webb's semen in 2018 when he was in high school. The Athletic reported last month that the lawsuit was still unresolved, but it appears that was misreported.
Mike Klis of 9News reported Thursday that a Circuit Court Judge in Alabama dismissed all the claims against Webb on April 2. The lineman's agent then sent a letter to the NFL's 32 teams informing them that the lawsuit had been dismissed.

According to documents obtained by 9NEWS, Circuit Judge Timothy C. Burgess ruled the actions in this case a) did not sufficiently satisfy the elements of outrage, b) there was no evidence of intent by Webb to harm the plaintiff, c) there was no physical injury to the plaintiff and d) because the plaintiff's alleged damages were caused by a third party who stole the bottle from Webb's locker and transported it to a separate locker room, judgment was granted in Webb's favor on the negligence claim.
NFL.com had Webb projected as a fifth- or sixth-round pick leading up to the draft, but he went undrafted despite the claims being dismissed. He now gets a chance to play in the NFL with the Broncos.

Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro Cam Heyward returned to practice Tuesday after skipping weeks of training camp sessions in search of a renegotiated contract. Heyward was seen by reporters participating in individual drills during the open portion of practice. Heyward's underpaid, but lacks leverage after signing deal Heyward, 36, signed a two-year, $29 million contract extension in 2024 that covers the 2025 and 2026 seasons. His salary is considerably below his market value as a first-team All-Pro defensive tackle. Per Over the Cap, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones is the NFL's highest-paid interior defensive lineman with an average annual salary of $31.75 million per year. Fifteen interior lineman make $20 million or more per season. Heyward, meanwhile, is making $14.5 million per season on his current deal. But he signed it last summer coming off a 2023 campaign in which he missed six games and didn't make the Pro Bowl for the first time in seven seasons. In 2024, he returned to All-Pro form and was named first-team All-Pro for the fourth time in his career. Heyward told reporters on Aug. 11 when he addressed his hold-in that he told the Steelers when he signed the extension in 2024 to expect him back at the negotiating table if he made an All-Pro team. "It's hard for me, after the year that I had, to really justify playing at the number I'm playing at," Heyward said. "I understand I signed a contract last year. "But to be completely honest with you, when I signed that, I told them, 'When I have an All-Pro year, expect me to come back.' ... I think everybody kind of giggled a little bit. But in my head, I used it as motivation to go out there and prove it." Heyward reportedly first approached the Steelers about renegotiating his deal in February. He showed up to training camp in late July without a new deal and had been a hold-in for several weeks until returning to practice fully on Tuesday. Now, with one preseason game remaining on Pittsburgh's schedule, Heyward's back in pads and appears to be preparing to get into football shape ahead of the Sept. 7 Week 1 game against the New York Jets.

And in the case of the NFL MVP, history indicates those voters most likely will back a quarterback. Not only have quarterbacks won 70% of NFL MVP awards, but they've taken home the hardware 17 times in the last 18 seasons — including 12 years in a row. So when considering an MVP wager on a quarterback, ask yourself two questions: Can his team win its conference, and can he lead the league in touchdowns? You should be able to answer 'yes' to at least one of those questions before making any MVP bet. When it comes to MVP longshots for 2025, your best bets are NFC quarterbacks. For an AFC longshot to win, he and his team would have to outperform Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Joe Burrow. That's a daunting task. The year prior, though, Brock Purdy was neck and neck with Baltimore's Lamar Jackson in the MVP race heading into their Week 16 head-to-head tilt. Purdy imploded that night, throwing four interceptions in a 33-19 home loss. However, he's shown that he can play at an MVP level — a reason the 49ers gave him a $256 million extension in the offseason. San Francisco will enjoy the league's easiest schedule this season, which means it conceivably could contend for the top spot in the NFC. Which makes Purdy an intriguing MVP longshot bet. Jared Goff +3100 Detroit Jared Goff has joined the ranks of elite NFL passers. The problem with his 2025 MVP candidacy? His team's schedule, especially in the first half of the season. Seven of Detroit's first 10 opponents made the playoffs in 2024. The Lions also face the (seemingly improved) Bears and Bengals during that stretch, giving them nine contests against playoff-caliber teams through Week 11. Now you know why Goff's MVP price is higher than Purdy's: The latter has a much easier path to MVP contention. Baker Mayfield +3400 Baker Mayfield has posted numbers similar to Goff the last two seasons. However, the Tampa Bay quarterback has a much easier 2025 schedule — in large part because the NFC South is arguably the NFL's weakest division, while the NFC North is the toughest. McCarthy +7500 The Vikings' J.J. McCarthy is a Hail Mary MVP longshot. Remember, though, head coach Kevin O'Connell's not only resurrected Sam Darnold in 2024, he got 14 wins and an MVP-quality season out of the former No. 1 pick. McCarthy, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, takes over a loaded offense. Also, his coach is one of the league's best play-callers. In other words, McCarthy has the potential to put up huge numbers for a legit playoff contender.
