RM200 per passport: Border officers arrested over 'flying passport' racket

JOHOR BAHRU: Four enforcement officers have been arrested on suspicion of accepting a bribe of RM3,000 while on duty at the motorcycle entry zone checkpoint along the Johor-Singapore border. According to a source from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the four male suspects, aged between their 20s and 40s, were detained today at the Johor MACC office. "Two main suspects were initially apprehended by the Compliance Unit of the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) during an inspection at the counter yesterday. They were subsequently handed over to the MACC. "Following their arrest, two more enforcement officers were detained on suspicion of being complicit in the 'flying passport' activity," the source said. Earlier today, MCBA confirmed the arrest of two enforcement officers on duty at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) last night in connection with the same scheme. MCBA CIQ BSI Commander Roszita Dim said the two male suspects, aged 31 and 49, were detained during a covert monitoring operation conducted by the agency's Compliance Unit starting at 3pm that day. The operation targeted officers stationed at the CIQ complex after suspicious activity was detected around 7.30pm at the vehicle zone checkpoint. Investigations revealed several questionable entries in the visitor log, using the login credentials of one officer at the counter, including records involving foreign nationals previously identified as problematic visitors. The MACC source added that during the arrest, 14 foreign passports, four mobile phones belonging to the main suspects, and approximately RM2,800 in cash were recovered. "Initial investigations suggest that the cash and mobile phones are linked to bribery transactions involving the 'flying passport' scheme. "For each passport stamped without the physical presence of the owner, the suspects allegedly received around RM200," the source said. Meanwhile, Johor MACC deputy director of operations Hairul Ilham Hamzah confirmed the arrests when contacted. He said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. "All suspects will be brought before the Johor Bahru Court for a remand application," he added.

Former State UNK finalist refutes affair claim, files police report

Published on: Saturday, July 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 26, 2025 By: Ricardo Unto Text Size: Dianarin shows the police report she lodged, as shared in her Facebook post on Saturday. - Diyna Diana Rin | Facebook KOTA KINABALU: A former Top 3 State Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan (UNK) finalist has lodged a police report over viral social media allegations linking her to a married man. Dianarin Vahidin, 2021 Paginatan UNK, in a Facebook post on Saturday, said she was wrongly accused of being a 'husband snatcher.' 'The accusation is a very serious slander, baseless, and has affected my personal dignity, my family's good name, and the reputation of the Unduk Ngadau institution,' she wrote. She firmly denied any involvement in the alleged affair, describing the claims as harmful and emotionally distressing. Dianarin, the first runner-up in the 2021 State UNK, said the online harassment had compromised her safety and emotional wellbeing, prompting her to seek legal advice and file a police report. She also referred the matter to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for investigation and further action. 'I take this seriously and believe this should serve as a lesson to be more responsible, ethical, and careful when posting or sharing provocative content online,' she said. Dianarin expressed gratitude to the Sabah Unduk Ngadau Association (UNS) for supporting her right to defend herself and uphold her dignity. She urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to help foster a more respectful and responsible digital environment. 'Unverified condemnation can leave a deep impact on someone's life,' she said, thanking friends, family, and supporters who stood by her. State UNK co-chairperson Datuk Joanna Kitingan also responded to the post by saying, 'I know you are a brave girl. Making the police report is the right thing to do. Praying the culprit will be caught.' The controversy began on Friday when a Facebook user posted about her friend being cheated on by her husband, claiming he had an affair with a district-level beauty queen, but did not name anyone directly. Online users, acting as amateur sleuths, began speculating on the identity of the alleged 'husband snatcher,' leading to several Unduk Ngadau participants' names and photos being circulated without verification. At press time, the Facebook user who first shared the story had deleted both the initial and follow-up posts and issued an apology for the inconvenience and confusion caused. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
