Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff has shared new details about what he remembers from his Top Gear crash, revealing that his biggest fear in the moment was that he 'wouldn't have a face'.
On Friday, Disney Plus is releasing a new documentary – titled Flintoff – documenting the cricket legend's accident, his illustrious career in his sport and on TV, and what the future holds for the national treasure.
In 2019, around a decade after retiring from cricket, Freddie began presenting Top Gear alongside Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris, sharing his love of cars with fans and taking on daring stunts. It had been a dream of his to join the BBC programme.
However, in December 2022 he was involved in a life-altering accident at the show's test track, Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey. In his new documentary, he revealed what went through his mind as the open-top car flipped over, and the split-second decision he made that prevented his death.
Freddie, 47, was previously resistant to the idea of making a documentary about his life, but following the crash, he wanted to go ahead with the project so that speculation about his injuries would stop.
He suffered multiple facial injuries and broken ribs in the accident, and was airlifted to hospital after around a 40-minute wait. In Disney Plus' Flintoff, he went into more detail than ever before about what happened, with photos showing the extent of his facial wounds, including the rare loss of soft tissue.
'I remember everything about it. In some ways it would've been easier if I'd gone unconscious and been unconscious for a week or two and you wake up and your stitches are out. But I remember everything,' he said to the camera.
He explained the set-up of the open-top, three-wheel car that he was driving, which had a reinforced windscreen in front of him, while he was exposed above his head.
Recalling how he was probably going at 40 to 45mph, he said that he was being shown how to 'get the car going sideways' – but then, 'the wheel came off at the front'.
'It's a funny thing rolling a car, because there's a point of no return. And everything slows down. It's so weird,' he said.
'I used to play cricket. I used to bat, and you get 0.4 of a second to make your mind up where the ball's going, what shot you're going to play, how you're going to move your feet.
'And as it started going over, I looked at the ground, and I knew, if I get hit here on this side, then I'll break my neck. If I get hit on the temple, I'm dead. My best chance, is go face down.'
Freddie thought back to when his face hit the ground, touching his chin and then dragging his hand up his face to show where the injuries were sustained, where scarring is now visible over the wounds.
'But then I got dragged out, the car went over, and I went over the back of the car, and then pulled face down on the runway for about 50 metres underneath the car. And then hit the grass and then flipped back in,' he recollected.
At that moment, Freddie revealed that he 'thought he was dead', because he was conscious, but he couldn't see anything.
'I was thinking, is that it? Is that it, do you know what I mean? Just seeing black for the rest of my days,' he said. But then he pulled his hat up from over his eyes, and confirmed to himself that he was on the track, realising: 'This is not heaven.'
'My biggest fear was, I didn't think I had a face. I thought my face had come off. I was frightened to death,' he said.
Dr Tom Breen, from the Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex, attended to Freddie on the day of the crash, having received a call to the airfield in Surrey.
'Freddie was clearly very shellshocked. He had quite a significant facial injury. I mean it wasn't one, it was several and multiple,' Dr Tom said in the documentary.
'He was in a lot of pain, so we gave him some pain relief and we transported him to our leading major trauma centre, which is St George's hospital.'
When Freddie was rushed to St George's Hospital, he was seen by oral and maxillofacial surgeon Mr Jahrad Haq, who knew that the athlete's case was severe when he received a call from the A&E consultant, as typically injuries are 'managed at a more junior level before escalating to consultant'.
When asked how he would describe Freddie's injuries when he first saw him, Mr Jahrad answered: 'Complex.'
He then elaborated, stating: 'His injuries, overall for the past 20 years of seeing maxillofacial trauma, I'd probably put up in the top five.'
A few days before the release of Flintoff on Disney Plus, Metro attended a screening in London for the documentary, where Freddie took part in a Q&A.
He admitted that one of the motivations for doing a programme with Disney was the amazement of seeing his picture alongside Star Wars on the streaming platform's homepage, having been a huge fan since he was a kid.
He then added: 'I feel very privileged to have played cricket professionally for 15 years, grow up around the game and experience some incredible highs, some incredible lows. But the one thing is, I tried to enjoy it. And then probably circumstance over the past two or three years, things changed a little bit, and then, rightly or wrongly, became more interesting. And there's a bit more of a story to tell.'
Freddie emphasised that he wanted to have the opportunity to look back at his career and 'some of the amazing people that I had the opportunity to play with, the amazing people that I got the opportunity to play against', which he never thought would be the case.
'I didn't want an accident – although it keeps coming back to it in the documentary – to be the one thing that defines you, or that you're remembered for. It's something which happened, and it's a constant struggle and a constant tug of war,' he shared.
Addressing the audience at the end of the screening, Freddie admitted that he 'wasn't sure' what he personally wanted to get out of the documentary. More Trending
'I think when you lay yourself bare a little bit and you put something like this out there, you're never quite sure if you're doing the right thing. One of the things that I really enjoyed, actually, for the past two years, is, I wouldn't say living under the radar, but living under a radar which I've not experienced for a long time,' he said.
Addressing his return to cricket, as he's now head coach for the England Men's Lions, he continued: 'Doing the job I do within cricket's allowed me to do that. This is somewhere putting my head above the parapet, which I'm pretty nervous about doing.
'I enjoy the cricket bits on this, and honestly, I wish it were a few more, and I appreciate that there's a crash there as well, which people want to be spoken about. So it's been a delicate balance for myself.'

It comes after The Sun on Sunday revealed on Sunday the BBC-led inquiry had contacted cops. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 4 Strictly Come Dancing has been engulfed in its biggest crisis after police were brought in Credit: PA 4 The Met Police tonight confirmed they are investigating drug allegations relating to Strictly Credit: PA We told two weeks ago how the BBC, with the help of external lawyers Pinsent Masons, were probing claims that two Strictly stars had abused cocaine. Today, in a new statement, a Met spokesperson said: 'On Tuesday 12 August, the Metropolitan Police received an allegation about drug related offences. "Police are assessing the information and further enquiries are taking place to establish whether there is evidence of a criminal offence being committed. 'We won't be commenting further at this time.' In The Sun's story two weeks ago we told how it was claimed it was 'well known' that two Strictly stars took drugs including cocaine. And it was alleged one Strictly personality had said about one of the stars they were 'off their face … have you seen the pupils in their eyes'. This morning we revealed cops were now involved but did not state the nature and detail of the allegations they were investigating. The corporation had already launched an inquiry into its flagship Saturday night family show amid claims two of its stars had used cocaine. It is understood that detectives from the Met Police are examining other allegations relating to the telly ballroom hit, which has been rocked by a string of controversies. Our latest shock revelation comes as the BBC prepares to launch Strictly's 23rd series next month - after officially announcing the line-up of celebrities including reality TV star Dani Dyer. A source told The Sun on Sunday: 'It's a significant new development in the BBC's recent string of crises that they have now got the police involved in investigating allegations surrounding Strictly. "This is a very dramatic turn of events. 'Despite all the show and its team have been through over recent months, it's hugely controversial that you've now got Scotland Yard detectives probing Strictly. 'This is their biggest prime-time family entertainment show, so it's not a good look for the BBC.' Strictly has been the subject of inquiries into bullying and inappropriate behaviour over the past 14 months. But this is believed to be the first time the BBC has been in contact with the police over allegations linked to the show. It is understood the matter was referred by the BBC after it launched an inquiry, conducted by external lawyers Pinsent Masons, into alleged drug use on the show. The Sun on Sunday reported two weeks ago how it was 'well known' that two Strictly stars took cocaine. It was claimed one accused another of being 'off their face' - saying: 'Have you seen their pupils?' Lawyers were brought in after ex-Strictly star and opera singer Wynne Evans made allegations in a legal submission to the BBC in March. In relation to the drugs allegations, the BBC said a fortnight ago: 'We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. 'We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. 'It would not be appropriate for us to comment further.' 4 BBC bosses alerted police after lawyers began an inquiry into the scandal-hit series Credit: Getty

Fake Or Fortune drama as art collector takes a gamble and turns down HUGE sum for his 'lost masterpiece' painting

An art collector is set to cause some 'high drama' on BBC show Fake Or Fortune? as he turns down a huge sum of money for his 'lost masterpiece painting'. Artist David Taylor originally purchased the oil canvas for £2000 for its appearance alone before experts later identified it as the missing artwork by 20th century Canadian impressionist Helen McNicoll. However, David raises plenty of eyebrows when he rejects the whopping offer of £300,000 from a private collector and instead decides to take a gamble at auction, reports The Mirror. The painting in question, called The Bean Harvest, had been 'missing' for 110 years, having last been spotted at an exhibition at London 's Royal Academy in 1915. David appeared on the BBC programme last year, where presenters Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould helped him prove the painting's authenticity. Helen McNicoll's signature was only discovered when David removed the artwork - which depicts a woman picking beans in a field - from the frame, with art dealer Phillip then estimating it to be worth between £150,000-£200,000. Helen McNicoll, who went deaf from the age of two, is one of Canada's most celebrated artists and known for her impressionist representations of rural landscapes. Her flourishing career was cut short in 1915 when she died aged 35 following complications from diabetes. When the hosts later revisited David, he was keen to sell, with billionaire philanthropist and private collector Pierre Lassonde - who is a major collector of McNicoll's work - showing a keen interest in the art. Canadian Pierre flew to London to see the painting in person before going on to offer David £300k for the masterpiece. He said of the work: 'For a painting that has been missing for 110 years, I think it's fantastic... I wouldn't mind adding one more piece to my collection.' However, David went on to reject the offer and decided to try his luck at Sotheby's auction house in London, with the hopes that the cash from the sale would help fund the purchase of a bungalow which he needed for health reasons. The results of this auction is set to be seen in an upcoming episode of Fake Or Fortune. Commenting on David's actions, host Fiona remarked: 'There's some high drama with this picture', states the publication. The Bean Harvest artwork went on view at London's Sotheby's in November 2024, with viewers set to see in an upcoming episode whether David's gamble has paid off While Lincoln-based artist David noted: 'I needed to sell it. I couldn't insure a £300,000 painting so I had to do something with it. 'Sotheby's were there and they said: "we have got a sale coming up", so I thought that tis was perfect. I am hoping for a record price.' A source told The Mirror: 'Who'd guessed that Fake Or Fortune? would end up like David Dickenson's Real Deal? Owner rejects a huge offer and tries his luck at auction, it's gripping stuff.' An insider added: 'Viewers are left waiting until the very last minutes of the show to find out whether he is a big winner - or a big loser.' The results of the auction will be aired on Fake Or Fortune: What Happened Next on Monday 25 August at 6.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

One Direction star returns to stage 10 months after bandmate Liam Payne's death

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Niall Horan made a triumphant return to the stage this weekend, much to the surprise of fans—especially since it wasn't even his gig. The Irish pop star and boyband heartthrob hasn't performed live in 10 months, having wrapped up his The Show world tour in Bogota, Colombia, last autumn before embarking on a hiatus. That same month, Niall and his One Direction bandmates – Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik – were left heartbroken when Liam Payne died at the tender age of 31. Niall had spent time with Payne just weeks earlier when the Strip That Down hitmaker attended his concert in Argentina, not long before his fatal fall from a hotel balcony on October 16. Having taken some time away from the music scene following his late friend's funeral, Niall, 31, came back with a bang last night, stepping out onto a stage he's performed countless times: London's O2 Arena. He was a special guest for long-time friend and fellow music superstar Shawn Mendes, 27, who brought his On The Road Again tour to the capital. Celebrating hits from his decade in the industry, the Grammy-nominated Canadian songwriter was met with deafening screams upon introducing Niall to the crowd. Teasing Niall's arrival, Shawn began on the mic: 'I met this fella years and years ago; I was probably 16 or 17. 'I came into this industry, and I was terrified of everything and everyone. We talk a lot of s**t, but this man has been an older brother to me.' He declared sweetly: 'I love him with all my heart. Please welcome Niall Horan.' Naturally, the packed venue went wild, as footage later shared to Shawn's Instagram captured. Fans immediately burst into tears, jumped up and down, and shook their heads in disbelief as the Slow Hands vocalist made his way out, guitar in hand, of course. 'I'll remember this for a long time ❤️ Thank you so much London x', Shawn's caption read, with Niall commenting a red heart also. Together, they performed Niall's debut solo single, This Town, which was released after 1D's sabbatical began in 2016. Thanking the crowd before leaving the stage, Niall professed his love for Shawn and said: 'Take care, everyone.' As the video of the wholesome moment began doing the rounds online, fans were quick to express their excitement and plead with the celebrity pals for a proper collaboration. 'Best duo ever 🤍. We need a collab please? ❤️🙏', @niallxupdates_ commented on Instagram. 'OMG! Niall and Shawn together 😍🔥 So beautiful!', wrote @rashelhemmings. 'I didn't even realize how much I missed his voice. 💖', added Niall fan @_fatbirdsinging. @xoanyushka joked: 'i had the most normal reaction to this (i screamed)'. This is not the first time Niall and Shawn have duetted as, during Niall's lat tour, Shawn made a surprise appearance for a joint rendition of his hit Treat You Better. Meanwhile, today, Niall supporters further shared their pride at seeing him back where he belongs following his loss. Following Payne's shocking death, his bandmates all released devastating statements in tribute, with Niall taking to social media to say what had happened didn't 'feel real'. 'Liam had an energy for life and a passion for work that was infectious,' he wrote. 'He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure. 'All the laughs we had over the years, sometimes about the simplest of things, keep coming to mind through the sadness. We got to live out our wildest dreams together and I will cherish every moment we had forever. 'The bond and friendship we had doesn't happen often in a lifetime.' Niall went on to send his condolences to Payne's young son, Bear, whom he shared with pop star Cheryl, and the star's family. 'I feel so fortunate that I got to see him recently,' he concluded. 'I sadly didn't know that after saying goodbye and hugging him that evening, I would be saying goodbye forever. It's heartbreaking.' More Trending Niall sweetly signed off: 'Thank you for everything, Payno.' As well as his parents and two sisters, Payne is survived by his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. The circumstances surrounding his death have been investigated intently by police in recent months, resulting in five individuals being arrested in connection, among whom were a friend of Payne, the hotel manager, two employees, and a waiter. After months of proceedings, the latest is that three have been acquitted and two remain under suspicion. Got a story?
