Danny Dyer shares drugs bombshell after slamming EastEnders scripts
Before joining the BBC soap, Danny was best known for appearing in films including Human Traffic, Mean Machine and The Football Factory.
In 2013 he was cast as Mick Carter in EastEnders, a role he held until his character was killed off in 2022.
A few years on, the 47-year-old actor has taken aim at the show whilst also detailing the personal struggles he faced during filming.
During a charity night at the Wimbledon Football Club in South West London on Friday night, Danny didn't hold back.
'I was off my nut for a lot of that job. I was squinting a lot for a couple of years, a lot of Valium and Diazepam,' he told the audience when reflecting on his time on the soap.
'You have 30 pages a day you've got to learn. There's no f***ing about. You organically make the scene work, you rehearse nothing. It f***s your nut up. I ended up in rehab twice,' he added, as reported by The Sun.
Danny also revealed he was banned from drinking alcohol in the Queen Vic and crew members even put antiseptic in the beer barrels to prevent him from doing so.
'When I first arrived on set I was slipping around the side and having a few lagers and they found out, so they started to put TCP into the beer. I wasn't off my nut. I had a drink every now and again,' he shared.
The actor then criticised the show's 'dark' storylines before claiming he couldn't even find the time to attend events such as funeral's while working on EastEnders.
'You earn good money, but you ain't got time to go to a cashpoint. You have no life. The amount of birthdays I missed. If someone dies in your family they won't even let you go to the funeral. It's such a machine. There's not much duty of care. That's the truth. On EastEnders there is no messing about and you've got to do it. It's the hardest part of our job.'
He also made digs at some of the storylines – calling Mick's romance with Janine 'mental' and blasted the decision to kill off Lola (played by Danielle Harold) last year, which he called a 'waste'.
Danny, who was believed to have been paid about £250,000 per year when he appeared on the soap, went on to say he thought A-list actors would 'crumble' if they worked on the show.'
In a statement to Metro, a spokesperson for EastEnders said: 'We would never discuss an individual's private matters however, we do not recognise these claims.
'EastEnders has extremely robust and well established procedures in place to safeguard the welfare of everyone who works on the show.'
Following Danny's comments, a source told the same publication that people who work on EastEnders would be 'baffled' by his claims and said it was an 'odd move' from the actor after he's previously said several times he'd like to return to the long-running series, which has been airing since 1985.
On the upcoming episode of BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, Danny also revealed he only took the role of Mick because he 'had no money'.
'I had bailiffs [coming round], no-one would hire me and the more I'm doing these club appearances, the more drugs I'm taking, and drink, so I'm in this weird spiral,' he told the programme.
Last month Danny spoke about once being kicked out by his wife Jo, whom he first started dating in 1992. More Trending
During an episode of The Assembly, he was grilled about his wife taking control of his bank accounts.
'She controls everything now. She did kick me out because I was a p****. And she deserved better,' he revealed.
'Sometimes I would go out and get off my head, take drugs, and I wouldn't come home for three days. I had issues – I never wanted the party to end. She had every right to throw me out.'

BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay halts show as Carol Kirkwood suffers on air blunder
BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay was forced to step in and say 'sorry' during Wednesday's edition of the programme as Scots star Carol Kirkwood suffered a technical issue BBC Breakfast was hit by a disruption during Wednesday's live show, as presenter Jon Kay was forced to step in. A technical blunder occurred as Jon and co-presenter Sarah Campbell were reading the daily headlines. When the moment arrived to hand over to Scots star Carol Kirkwood for the weather forecast, chaos broke out on the breakfast programme, as reported by the Mirror. Jon said: "Carol has the weather for us this morning. Hi Carol, is this sunshine going to continue for many?". She responded: "Yes, it is today, Jon. Good morning to you both, and good morning to you too. Yesterday we reached..." As the BBC meteorologist began her report, her microphone began malfunctioning, making it impossible for audiences to hear her properly, which forced Jon to intervene. Cutting back to the studio, he said: "Carol, I'm sorry, Carol, we've got a little bit of interference on Carol's microphone there. We'll sort that out and we'll get back to her very soon. "It sometimes happens, gremlins get involved. Maybe it's the heat? ! Maybe it's the hot weather interfering." Thankfully for audiences the minor technical issue was resolved quickly, as they managed to return to Carol later in the broadcast. Jon told viewers: "Delighted to say we can rejoin Carol. Carol, we don't mind not hearing you when the weather is bad! But when the weather is good we want to hear every word." He continued with the weather update, indicating that the highest temperatures today, Wednesday 13, would be in the north of the Uk, in Yorkshire, where it could reach up to 33 degrees. Meanwhile earlier this week, Carol surprised her colleagues after revealing the roles she held before joining the BBC team. During Monday's show, Jon asked Carol about the jobs she had when she was younger to earn some extra money during the summer holidays. She replied: "Yes, I did. I worked as a housemaid, as a waitress, as a receptionist, all these things!". Humorously claiming she had done 'everything', Carol also shared that she had been a postwoman. Clearly surprised, Jon responded: "A post woman? ! You didn't used to predict the weather for your neighbours? That kind of thing?". She retorted: "No, but you know, you used to go in the mornings, you'd smell toast, bacon, sausages. Ooh, it'd make you hungry!".

EastEnders legend disowned by entire family in early BBC iPlayer release
This article contains spoilers for tonight's episode of EastEnders, which airs on BBC One at 7.30pm or can be streamed now on iPlayer. The floor has fallen from beneath Suki Panesar-Unwin's (Balvinder Sopal) feet as Avani Nandra-Hart's (Aaliyah James) pregnancy was exposed to their family. It's been a whirlwind few weeks, ever since Avani got a positive test and confided in best mate Barney Mitchell (Lewis Bridgeman) about her desire to have an abortion. She was terrified by the prospect of raising twisted Joel Marshall's (Max Murray) child, but her attempts at researching a clinic were spotted by Suki. Despite asserting that it could be Avani's only chance to have a child, the teen remained firm on her decision, and was prepared to open up to mum Priya (Sophie Khan Levy) and dad Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) about her ordeal. However, at the abortion clinic, Suki dealt a troubling offer – she would raise the child alongside wife Eve (Heather Peace), despite not consulting her about the matter. When Eve found out, she was furious but eventually warmed to the idea of being a parent, something she hadn't considered before. However, she could also see how much the pregnancy was already starting to have an impact on Avani's physical and mental health. She knew that Suki was pressuring her into giving birth, and wanted the decision to be Avani's. After a heart to heart, she had an abortion. The two then revealed all to an enraged Ravi and Priya – just as Suki walked in. In today's episode, Ravi implored his daughter to tell him who the father was – though Priya knew what problems that could cause and reassured their daughter that Joel needn't know if she didn't want him to. Suki desperately tried to build bridges with her family, telling Ravi that she was prepared to remortgage the Slaters' house to pay off the debts he owed at Walford East. But for once, Ravi was speechless. He had absolutely nothing to say to his step-mother, other than comparing her to his wicked, late father Nish (Navin Chowdhry). Regardless of Suki's offer, it seemed to be too late as an order to wind up the restaurant had already been issued. She then tried to turn the tables on Eve, saying that it was irresponsible of her to take a child to have such a major procedure without her parents' knowledge. Avani recently celebrated her 16th birthday on screen. She had lavish ideas for her party, which Ravi promised her despite his monetary issues. When Kojo Asare (Dayo Koleosho) flushed 50k worth of drugs that Ravi planned to deal down the loo, Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) stepped in with some damage control. He promised Ravi that Avani could have exclusive use of the nightclub – something which seemed to work. However, that night, Ravi told Harry that he had to repay his debts by pushing the narcotics on his behalf. Despite Avani being 16, actress Aaliyah James is a lot older. She turned 25 on 26th June. In response to Suki's desperation, Priya swanned into the room and slapped her, branding her 'poison'. She then chased after Ravi, who was on the warpath to find Joel. In their absence, Avani began to bleed, and Suki had to take her to the hospital. There, she confessed that she felt her ill health was a punishment from God for having a termination. Meanwhile, a blissfully unaware Ravi launched a verbal attack on Joel. When his dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) suggested that Avani may have slept with someone else – or multiple people – Ravi saw red. Ross' only saving grace was the fact news reached Priya that Avani had been hospitalised, and the two left. Later, Joel branded her 'weak and stupid' for making the decision without him. At the end of the day, Suki came home and found Eve, son Vinny (Shiv Jalota) and grandson Nugget (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury) packing their bags and leaving. They were so disgusted by her behaviour that they couldn't bare to be under the same roof. For Eve, she said that Suki had opened her up to the hurt of believing that she could one day be a mother, and she doesn't know what they have left in their marriage. Is this the end of Sukeve, and what will Suki do without her family? This could well be leading up to somewhat of an absence for Suki, in the wake of losing her clan? We know that Balvinder Sopal is heading to the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom this autumn, though she has confirmed that she will still be in Albert Square.
