THEY were on the receiving end of one of his greatest moments.
But now Claudio Reyna could soon be watching his superstar son Giovanni line up in the colours of Italian side Parma.

That's after transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed that the Serie A side had submitted a formal bid to Borussia Dortmund for the services of the US international playmaker.
LAFC have also been linked with a move for the 22-year-old, who was actually born in Sunderland during Claudio's time there.
Romano wrote on X: "Parma submitted formal bid to Borussia Dortmund to sign Gio Reyna as key target for Serie A side.
"LAFC are not in active talks for Reyna despite reports, Parma are on it with with fee offered around 6m Euros."
Followers of the Ibrox club with long memories will remember August 1999, when the Ibrox men took on Parma in the qualifiers for the Champions League.
Some of the names in this Parma side trip off the tongue to this day: Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Lilian Thuram, to name just three.
But they came unstuck in the first leg of this qualifier at Ibrox.
Cannavaro got himself sent off in the opening period before Rod Wallace opened the scoring for Dick Advocaat's side.
But Reyna popped up with the clincher with around quarter of an hour left to give the Ibrox men a commanding 2-0 lead to take to Italy.
As it happened, the Gers went down by a single goal out in Parma, but the spot in the group stages - and a famous triumph - were theirs.

Ruben Amorim has 'no doubts' that Man United can win Premier League and Champions League again

Ruben Amorim has said he has 'no doubts' that Manchester United can reach the highs of Premier League and Champions League glory again, echoing bullish comments made by his player Luke Shaw on the club's pre-season tour. United finished 15th last term in a dismal season, their lowest league finish since 1989-90, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham to finish without silverware. But Amorim, who said the 'hardest part' of his job was going to games 'know[ing] that we are not going to be competitive', felt confident that things could be turned around in his first full season as manager. Speaking to various publications on Sunday ahead of their friendly against Everton in Chicago, Amorim said: 'I know it's a massive gap from where we finished - but it's Manchester United. We need to return to Europe.' Asked whether United can win the Premier League and Champions League again, he said, 'I have no doubts. 'There are some things you cannot buy that this club has: pedigree, history, fans. With all these things, if we have a different culture, we can return to our place.' His comments echoed Shaw's, who said earlier in this tour that, 'The aim has to be to win the Premier League,' he said. 'I know people will be questioning me after last season, but it has to be that.' Shaw also made a comment that there were 'no stragglers' in the United team, with a major clearout of players taking place and several expensive signings heading for the exit door or out of favour. The exiles Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrrell Malacia were not included in the pre-season squad and have been given the opportunity to explore the possibility of moves away, while Marcus Rashford has been offloaded to Barcelona on loan. Amorim gave a matter-of-fact explanation of the state of affairs at Old Trafford. 'There are players that clearly show they don't want to be here and that is normal. They are not bad and I'm good. I'm not bad and they are good,' he said. 'If the market closes and then they are Manchester United players, we as a club have to treat them in the same conditions. But in this moment I'm just working with the players that I think are going to stay and the other guys are trying to find a solution for their careers.' Of Garnacho, who abruptly fell out of favour at the end of last season, Amorim said, 'He's a really talented boy and sometimes things don't work out. You cannot explain specifically what it is. 'But I have the feeling, I think it's clear that Garnacho wants a different thing with a different leadership and I can understand that. So I think it's not a problem.' The 40-year-old evidently sees his tenure as a long-term project. He said, 'I want to be manager of Manchester United for a while,' later asserting he wanted to be at the club for '20 years'. 'And I took five years to choose this club so I don't want to fail,' he added.

Kieran Dowell says opening day draw was a reality check for Rangers

Kieran Dowell described Rangers' 1-1 draw with Motherwell on Saturday as a 'reality check' after boss Russell Martin questioned the mentality of some players. It was not the start to the Premiership campaign that the new Gers boss or the travelling fans at Fir Park wanted, although it started positively when skipper James Tavernier headed in Joe Rothwell's 14th-minute corner. However, to the frustration of Martin and the Gers fans, the Ibrox side did not kick on and eventually succumbed to a spirited Well side in the 87th minute when Emmanuel Longelo drove in the equaliser. It is the third successive season that Rangers have failed to win their opening league game and afterwards Martin – who has to prepare his players for the first leg of the Champions League third qualifier against Viktoria Plzen at Ibrox on Tuesday night – lashed out at some players, talking about 'egos' and self-preservation'. Dowell, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Birmingham but who has started all three games under Martin, said: 'Not a big blow. It's a reality check. 'The first season I was here, we got beaten on the first day of the season 1-0 by Kilmarnock and it was in our hands by the end of the season. 'So it's a cliche, but it is a long season and there's plenty of time to catch up. 'But it's a few home truths (from Martin) I think. Obviously, we had a good start and then didn't put the game to bed. 'Almost sleep-walked into conceding that equaliser and probably deserved it in the end. 'I think the manager's been here five, six weeks now and that's what he's noticed. 'It's not been a successful time for the club and maybe we needed those sort of home truths, maybe some of the lads needed that. 'It's not for me to say. It's the manager's opinion and he said to us 'look yourself in the mirror'. 'And it's down to us, as players. We've obviously had a few managers now and it's up to us to prove it, if we want to be at this club going forward.' Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou, taking charge of his first game and a former team-mate of Martin at Norwich, was 'delighted' with his side's performance and believes it stands them in good stead for the future. He said: 'I think we already have confidence in what we're doing. I think we've been very effective with what we're doing, we want to be even more effective in terms of the chances we've created, but we've played some really good football in the pre-season. 'We've improved. We've played a very good (friendly) game against Hertha (Berlin) the other day, and this was a step up. 'It was a performance against a team and a club, who knows, might be in the Champions League in a couple of weeks from now. 'So we're really happy with the progress, with the confidence that there is in the team already, and for sure, this is going to push everyone in the right direction.'
