Over 2,460 Domestic Violence Cases Recorded Between January And April

KUALA TERENGGANU, July 16 (Bernama) -- A total of 2,467 cases of domestic violence were recorded nationwide from January to April this year.
Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said studies showed that housewives were the group with the highest incidence of domestic violence.
"But there may be some (victims) who do not even realise they are being victims... because this abuse is not just physical, it is emotional abuse. Sometimes the perpetrators can do 'reverse psychology' as well.
"Studies also found that most abuse is committed by the people closest to the victim or among family members," she said when met by reporters after officiating the Women's Wellbeing Advocacy Programme @ Domestic Violence (Aku Wanita @ KRT) here today.
Meanwhile, Noraini said that from January to April, 104 cases of domestic violence were recorded in Terengganu.
She said that although the number showed a decrease compared to the same period last year, which was 130 cases, the figure was still worrying.
Noraini said in this regard, the ministry had taken various initiatives to help reduce the number of domestic violence cases including through the Aku Wanita @ KRT Programme designed to approach the community in addressing the problem.
She said that through the programme, issues related to domestic violence will be discussed in depth with experts and survivors, namely victims who have successfully escaped domestic violence problems, for them to share their stories of recovery.
'In addition, a psychological intervention session called 'K-Chat' has also been introduced through this programme. This session is a group intervention between survivors with trained counselors and facilitators to help participants understand and deal with issues that have befallen them due to violence,' she added.

Gay party raid: ‘Shameful it happened in Kelantan'

He urged the Kelantan government to be allowed to formulate stricter laws without interference to stop such acts from taking root. Pas Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari. Bernama FILE PIX SHAH ALAM - Pas Information Chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari has described the recent police raid on a gay party in Kelantan as deeply shameful, particularly as the state is known as the 'Verandah of Mecca'. Taking to Facebook, Ahmad Fadhli stressed that it is shameful because it happened in Kelantan. 'If it had taken place in Kuala Lumpur, such as the raid on Blue Boy Club in August 2018 or the LGBT Halloween party in October 2022, in Johor Bahru like the same-sex party in February 2023 or even in Penang such as the sex party in a condominium unit in June 2022 where police found condoms, lubricants and ketamine drugs, of course it would not be seen as shameful. "In fact, those are considered normal, but when it happens in Kelantan, then it is said to be disgraceful,' he wrote. On Thursday, Kelantan police confirmed that a raid had been conducted on a gay gathering involving over 100 men aged between 20 and 30. The event took place at a bungalow in Kemumin in mid-June and was disrupted at around 1am following public tip-offs and surveillance by a special police team. Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat led the operation, which was part of ongoing efforts to crack down on immoral activities in the state. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat. Photo by Bernama Fadhli, who is also the Pasir Mas Member of Parliament (MP), praised the firm action taken by the authorities, saying it upheld the honour of the state. He urged the Kelantan government to be allowed to formulate stricter laws without interference to stop such acts from taking root. 'This effort deserves praise and should be continued until this deviant culture is eradicated from Kelantan. We hope the police remain consistent, combating this culture down to its roots. 'For the record, the Federal Court on 25 February 2021, for instance, had annulled a provision in the Kelantan Syariah Enactment related to the ban on men dressing like women on the grounds that it overlapped with Federal law. 'Therefore, Kelantan needs to explore what other avenues can be taken to create stricter laws that are still in line with the Federal Constitution,' he said.

Serial cable theft: Gang 'Dika Bayu' busted

PENDANG: Police have busted the 'Dika Bayu' gang, believed to be active on theft of telecommunication cables, after arresting seven men since July 10. Pendang police chief Supt Rodzi Hassan said police first arrested three men when they were spotted climbing and cutting cables at 5.50pm at a substation near Pokok Tai, Bukit Jenun here. He said police were then led to a homestay in Taman Sinar Intan, Sungai Petani and arrested another suspect after an inspection found tools for cable theft. "On July 13, police managed to arrest two more men by the roadside of Jalan Aman Jaya in Sungai Petani who are believed to be members of the same gang and another man suspected as 'fencer' for buying processed copper from the gang," he said in a press conference here on Thursday (July 17). Rodzi said the modus operandi of the group, all locals in their 20s, was to rent boarding houses and use rented cars to carry out the criminal activity to feed their drug habits. "Investigations found that this gang would survey the location of the substation via Google Map and find a way into the substation area. They used safety vests and helmets as disguise to distract the public," he said. He said that all those arrested had records related to theft and drugs. They also tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. "All suspects are now remanded for further investigation until July 19," he said. Rodzi said with the arrests, police are confident of solving 22 cases of theft of telecommunications substation cables in this district since last January until yesterday. He added, apart from Pendang, the suspects admitted to carrying out cable theft in the Sik, Yan, Alor Setar, Sungai Petani and Penaga districts in Penang, which involved losses estimated at RM145,000. — Bernama
