With OTT, good actors not relegated to just villain roles, says Kay Kay Menon

Hindustan Times16-06-2025
Mumbai, Actor Kay Kay Menon says OTT has opened up a lot of opportunities for artists unlike the past where only top stars got to portray heroes and many like him were pigeonholed in villain roles.
At the trailer launch of his upcoming series "Special Ops 2" in Mumbai on Monday, Menon, a versatile actor known for his roles across genres and mediums, spoke about the variety that has come with OTT.
"We come from that time where there were only theatrical releases, there was no OTT. So those areas were booked for you know what ... We good actors used to play villain characters. But now it's opened up completely. We as actors now have a chance to enjoy ourselves with whatever talent we have. That's what OTT gives us," he told reporters here.
The actor, known for his roles in "Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd", "Haider" and Mumbai Meri Jaan" as well as OTT series "Farzi" and "The Railway Men", said he loves playing the role of RAW officer Himmat Singh in "Special Ops".
"I know Himmat Singh in and out. I also know that I don't know anything about cyber ... So I don't know anything about it ... And for me to kind of get into it... it was an interesting actor's journey. I just acted like I'm an expert, that's all," he said about the new season.
The show became a runaway hit when it premiered on the streamer in 2020. It was followed by another installment called "Special Ops 1.5: The Himmat Story". The sequel is slated to premiere on JioHotstar on July 11.
Director Neeraj Pandey said there is no dearth of "unheard and untold" stories in the spy genre and it naturally becomes a magnet for any storyteller "whether it's the producers, the platform or whoever you would like to sit and the unsung hero".
"Also, because these are operations which are covert, they are classified, they are under possible denial. That's the reason not too many people are aware of these operations, these adventures. I feel that it's a compelling enough reason for us to bring it to the audiences. The proof of it is that they enjoy it and they want more of it. Our endeavour is to bring newer stories and keep discovering, searching for newer stories in this domain and take it to the audience," he added.
Kher, who is reprising her role of Juhi Kashyap in the series, said there are limited roles written for women and expressed her wish to portray all the possible shades.
"As an actor you want to play all roles, be it grey, black, white, orange, yellow. You want to keep working, but for women there are particular roles which people don't write about and you always wonder why."
She also credited Pandey for writing fierce women characters. Kher gave the example of the director's film "Baby", which featured Taapsee Pannu in an interesting spy role.
"So he's somebody who's always done it. And I was just lucky that I got to play Juhi," she said.

WWE RAW Highlights: Jey Uso defeated Bron Breakker with Roman Reigns' help while Iyo Sky avenge her loss to Raquel Rodriguez. The latest offering WWE RAW came from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and gave fans plenty to look forward to. In a captivating night, multiple intense battles were fought. Jey Uso's main event bout with Bron Breakker saw an appearance from Roman Reigns, while Ivo Sky squared off against Raquel Rodriguez for the second time in two weeks. Here's how the results at this week's Monday Night Raw shaped up in Pennsylvania. Jey Uso Defeats Bron Breakker, Roman Reigns Appear Jey Uso's main event clash with Bron Breakker saw Roman Reigns appear with a roar and deliver a spear on Breakker to help Uso win the Extreme Rules match in the latest episode of WWE RAW. Using intervention from Bronson Reed and Seth Rollins, Breakker looked set to be heading for a victory against Uso. However, the chaotic tussle ended in Uso's triumph when Reigns' surprise entry proved harmful to Breakker. As the Original Tribal Chief fended off Reed with a superman punch, Uso took advantage of the assist and hit Brekker with a superkick, followed by a frog splash that ended the contest. Iyo Sky faced up against Raquel Rodriguez for the second time in two weeks after losing to her in the previous episode of Raw. It was a chance to avenge the defeat and Sky stood in no mood to let go of the opportunity. The match started on an awful note for her, however, as she got slammed early on by Rodriguez. Mounting her troubles were the running interference by Rodriguz's Tag Team partner, Roxanne Perez. But Sky soon made amends, giving Perez a strong splash and backing it up with an Over The Moonsault on Rodriguez before executing the pinfall for her victory. Penta vs Xavier Woods New Day member Xavier Woods faced Penta in another intense clash at this week's Raw. The two strong wrestlers gave each other a hard time, landing heavy moves and forcing their rival to stretch every ounce of their endurance. Despite Kofi Kingston present there for support, Xavier Woods soon experienced the might of Penta, who eventually gained the upper hand. He even splashed onto Kingston after leaping over the ropes and unleashing the Mexicon Destroyer. Penta then went for the pinfall against Woods and won. Judgement Day's Victory; Becky Lych Wins After Submission In a tag team face-off, Mr. Iguana and Dragon Lee paired up against Judgement Day. After starting with Dragon Lee and JD McDonagh, the match soon turned to Mr. Iguana and Dominik Mysterio following the tap. The two teams came up with an impressive performance, unleashing heavy moves that threatened to tilt the scales decisively their way. However, Judgement Day eventually won after Finn Balor struck Mr. Iguana with a top-rope Coup de Grace. Balor then went for the pin and successfully ended the tussle. Becky Lynch's duel with Natalya saw Lynch successfully defend her Intercontinental Championship crown. In a one-sided affair, Lynch played aggressively from the start. She slammed Natalya into the ring post before producing the DisArmHer armbar on Nattie, from which she initially managed to free herself. However, Lynch eventually got the desired tap outs from her opponent after slapping back the DisArmHer armbar on her. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. The Diplomat Season 3 Gets Release Date, New Teaser Reveals Grace Penn As POTUS

The new teaser shows Grace Penn officially being sworn in as the president after Rayburn's sudden death in season two. Netflix's Emmy-nominated political thriller The Diplomat is returning to the screen. Alongside announcing the release date of the upcoming season, the streaming giant released yet another preview, giving fans a peek into what to expect. The new teaser for season three opens with Ambassador Kate Wyler, played by Keri Russell, sharing a warning with the viewers. 'A terribly flawed woman is now the president, and only we know just how flawed," she says as Grace Penn, played by Allison Janney, swears in as the new President of the United States. She steps into the Oval Office after President Rayburn's (Michael McKean) sudden death in season two. Fans of the show will remember that in the last season, Kate and her husband, Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell, had discovered Grace's connection to the British warship attack that was shown in the first episode of season one. In the final episode of season 2, Grace explained her rationale behind the attack to Kate in a tense exchange. The Diplomat Season 3: Release Date The 50-second teaser also shows Grace officially being sworn in as the president and introduces her husband, Todd Penn, played by Bradley Whitford. While Todd has been mentioned in the series since the first season, it will only be in season three that viewers see him make an appearance. Back in season one, he had misplaced a part of an NIH grant, which almost ruined his wife Grace's career even before she became vice president. The latest teaser of The Diplomat ends with Hal telling Kate, 'You will be in the White House watching what she does all the time." Netflix shared the teaser through their official social media accounts, writing, 'Keri Russell. Rufus Sewell. Allison Janney. Bradley Whitford. The Diplomat returns OCTOBER 16." The new season of the show will premiere on the OTT platform on October 16, and this time, instead of the shorter six-episode second season, fans will enjoy an eight-episode season. The Diplomat Season 3: Plot And Cast The official description of The Diplomat's season three describes Kate Wyler's new reality as 'the particular nightmare that is getting what you want. She just accused Vice President Grace Penn of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she's after the VP's job." Now, with Grace in power, Hal pushing Kate to become the new vice president, and shifting alliances around her, Kate would face challenges she never expected. Previously, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell talked about the ending of season two, revealing that the couple made a 'very powerful enemy." The new season will also explore Kate's increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) and her uneasy new dynamic with Todd Penn. The Diplomat, created by Debora Cahn, has already been renewed for season four. Alongside the lead pair, the series will also feature Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh, Celia Imrie, Nana Mensah and Miguel Sandoval. view comments First Published: August 19, 2025, 11:06 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
