White House readies order to fine banks for dropping clients over politics, Reports
White House
is drafting an executive order that would impose penalties on banks for dropping customers for political reasons, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.
Citing a draft of the order, the Journal said regulators would be instructed to investigate whether any financial institutions breach the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, antitrust laws or consumer financial protection laws.

The order, which could be signed as early as this week, would authorize monetary penalties, consent decrees or other disciplinary measures against violators, the Journal reported.
It also calls on regulators to strike policies they have that might have contributed to banks dropping certain customers and requires the Small Business Administration to review the practices of banks that guarantee the agency's loans, according to the report.
U.S. President Donald Trump in January said the CEOs of
JPMorgan Chase
and Bank of America did not provide banking services to conservatives. The two banks denied making banking decisions based on politics.
Live Events
The criticism of Wall Street banks followed accusations from congressional Republicans and Republican-led states, who claimed the institutions were engaging in "
woke capitalism
" and unfairly cutting ties with gun manufacturers, fossil fuel companies, and other businesses perceived to be aligned with the political right.
The Trump administration is pursuing a broad reform agenda aimed at modifying rules governing financial institutions, including capital requirements, arguing that such action will boost economic growth and unleash innovation.
The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Strong APSEZ performance, Adani's transition to non-executive director gets analyst backing
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone 's (APSEZ) robust first quarter revenue growth and margin improvement across major business verticals won the backing of leading brokerages, who saw the company as a long-term proxy for India's trade and infrastructure growth. Leading brokerages, including Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Kotak, and Jefferies, have issued a unanimous 'BUY' rating on APSEZ, as a positive sentiment followed a robust first-quarter performance. Do This Every Morning Wellnee In a note, Jefferies said Q1 EBITDA was 14 per cent above its estimates, led by domestic ports margin improvement and 2.0-2.9 times year-on-year revenue rise in logistics and marine. "Management reiterated its focus on absolute EBITDA growth, as the company intends to deliver end-to-end solutions vs pure volume growth," it said, adding FY26 volume guidance at 505-515 million tonnes (12-14 per cent rise yoy) was maintained. Live Events HSBC Global Investment Research said the company delivered robust Q1 revenue growth and margin improvements across major business verticals. "Strong ramp-up of new assets, turnaround in international port and logistics margins underscore intact earnings trajectory." Port throughput grew 11 per cent to 121 million tonnes, backed by 6 per cent growth in domestic and a 4 times jump in international. New asset additions (Vizhinjam and Gopalpur) offset weakness in Mundra, which saw a 6 per cent throughput decline due to geopolitical restrictions and embargoes, and softer coal handling due to lower thermal energy demand. "We lift FY26-28 EBITDA (estimate) by 2 per cent, reflecting better-than-expected margin improvement," it said, adding Vizhinjam and Colombo terminals should strengthen its capacity and pricing power. Goldman Sachs said while tariff-related uncertainty will remain, APSEZ's strong portfolio of port assets leverages it for market share gains (as ports of Vizinjham, Colombo and Tanzania ramp up in FY26 and Gangavaram regains its volumes), resulting in 12.5 per cent volume growth. Kotak Institutional Equities said APSEZ grew its EBITDA 30 per cent year-on-year, while facing head-on specific issues on imported coal and the transhipment business. "The port business continues to expand margins. It continues to add brownfield capacities judiciously and make its presence felt in new markets." Reported financial numbers came in better than expectations. Logistics and Marine revenue drove the growth, analysts at Goldman Sachs said in their report. For the quarter, the company reported a 21 per cent year-on-year increase in revenue to Rs 9,126 crore, while net profit rose 6.5 per cent to Rs 3,314.6 crore compared to the same period last year. Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) rose 13 per cent to Rs 5,494 crore, although margins narrowed to 60.2 per cent from 64.1 per cent in the same quarter last year. APSEZ has given a revenue guidance of Rs 36,000 crore to Rs 38,000 crore for the current fiscal (FY26) and an EBITDA forecast of Rs 21,000 crore to Rs 22,000 crore. The capex estimate has been put at Rs 11,000 crore to Rs 12,000 crore. "Strong ramp-up of new assets and a turnaround in international port and logistics margins underscore an intact earnings trajectory," said HSBC. Jefferies appreciated the management's continued focus: "Management reiterated its commitment to absolute EBITDA growth as the company shifts towards delivering end-to-end solutions, rather than purely volume-driven growth."

Bank of England cuts rates to 4% after narrow 5-4 vote
The Bank of England cut interest rates on Thursday but four of its nine policymakers - worried about high inflation - sought to keep borrowing costs on hold. Difficulty reaching an agreement meant the Monetary Policy Committee had to hold two rate votes for the first time in its history. Productivity Tool Zero to Hero in Microsoft Excel: Complete Excel guide By Metla Sudha Sekhar View Program Finance Introduction to Technical Analysis & Candlestick Theory By Dinesh Nagpal View Program Finance Financial Literacy i e Lets Crack the Billionaire Code By CA Rahul Gupta View Program Digital Marketing Digital Marketing Masterclass by Neil Patel By Neil Patel View Program Finance Technical Analysis Demystified- A Complete Guide to Trading By Kunal Patel View Program Productivity Tool Excel Essentials to Expert: Your Complete Guide By Study at home View Program Artificial Intelligence AI For Business Professionals Batch 2 By Ansh Mehra View Program With the MPC split over how to respond to an inflation rate that the BoE forecasts will soon be double its 2% target and a recent worsening of job losses, Governor Andrew Bailey and four colleagues backed lowering Bank Rate to 4% from 4.25%. But that was only after a first round of voting ended in a 4-4-1 split with external MPC member Alan Taylor initially backing a half-point cut. The four members of the MPC who backed keeping rates on hold included Clare Lombardelli, the deputy governor for monetary policy, who broke from the majority for the first time. Chief Economist Huw Pill also voted to keep Bank Rate at 4.25%. Live Events The BoE repeated its guidance about "a gradual and careful approach" to further cuts in borrowing costs but added a new line to its message on the outlook, hinting that its run of rate cuts might be nearing an end. "The restrictiveness of monetary policy had fallen as Bank Rate had been reduced," it said, no longer directly saying that policy was still restrictive. It repeated that there was no pre-set path for borrowing costs. A halt to the process of cutting rates would be a blow for finance minister Rachel Reeves and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who have struggled to meet their promise to voters to speed up Britain's slow economic growth. Bailey said the decision to cut rates for the fifth time since August last year was "finely balanced" although he thought they were still on a downward path. "But any future rate cuts will need to be made gradually and carefully," Bailey said in a statement. CONFLICTING RISKS The BoE is being pulled in different directions, leaving analysts, as well as its own policymakers, divided on its most likely moves in the coming months. Britain's jobs market has weakened in recent months in part due to a tax hike by Reeves on employers and U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war. But inflation is rising. The BoE revised up its forecast for a peak in inflation to 4% in September from 3.7% and said it would remain alert to the risk that the increase in prices - especially those of food - pushes up wage deals and longer-term price pressures. "Overall, the MPC judges that the upside risks around medium-term inflationary pressures have moved slightly higher since May," the summary of the meeting said. The BoE said it expected inflation to return to its 2% target only in the second quarter of 2027, three months later than its previous forecast. By contrast, the European Central Bank expects inflation in the euro zone to hold below 2%. It has cut borrowing costs eight times since June of last year, three more reductions than those of the BoE. Inflation has been above the BoE's 2% target almost constantly since May 2021. The British central bank said it expected economic growth of 0.3% in the July-to-September period, up from 0.1% in the second quarter. Its longer-term growth forecasts were little changed from its report in May with annual growth of just over 1% in the coming years. Before Thursday's expected rate cut, investors were mostly pricing in another rate cut in November but only one or two more in 2026. Bailey and other top BoE officials were due to hold a press conference at 1130 GMT. ETMarkets WhatsApp channel )
