It's official: ‘Squid Game' is one of the 100 greatest TV shows of all time

Time Out16-07-2025
It's always Emmy season at Time Out, where thrusting bouquets at our favourite all-time TV and streaming shows is a year-round preoccupation.
And a new addition to our critic-picked list of the 100 Greatest TV Shows of All Time has just landed. Netflix's sci-fi thriller Squid Game has wrapped up after three fierce, addictive and satirical seasons of dystopian death and mayhem. We love it, and judging by worldwide viewing figures that make it the streamer's most watched show, so does everyone else.
Born from his aborted idea for a movie, Korean writer Hwang Dong-hyuk's 22-episode three-season series follows down-on-his-luck chauffeur and gambling addict Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) through a battle of survival in a Grand Guignol game show run by the mysterious Front Man.
'Absurd, upsetting and blackly comic, it's an excoriating indictment of human greed,' reads the new entry on Time Out's 100 Greatest TV Shows list. 'It's shot through with compelling human drama as Gi-hun clings desperately to his humanity as all around him abandon theirs.'
Squid Game lands at number 48 on the 100-strong list.
Here's Time Out's top 10 in full:
1. Breaking Bad (2008-2013)
2. Twin Peaks (1990–1991)
3. The Sopranos (1999-2007)
4. The Wire (2002–2008)
5. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979)
6. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)
7. Game of Thrones (2011-2019)
8. The Office (UK) (2001-03)
9. Mad Men (2007–2015)
10. Succession (2018–2023)
The best TV and streaming shows of 2025 (so far).

I went to the little-known roadside diner that feels like being in Stranger Things – the food takes you back in time

It really did feel like entering the set of Netflix's hit TV show Stranger Things - yet I was actually in a roadside cafe in the UK. 10 Brightside diner features a 70s interior like it is part of the set for Stranger Things Credit: Cyann Fielding 10 Inside, there are warm oranges, yellows and reds as well as rattan lampshades Credit: Instagram 10 The menu offers a wide choice of pizzas, burgers, sandwiches and more Credit: Instagram Brightside in Exeter, Devon, feels like a retro Little Chef, an iconic motorway cafe chain that sadly stopped trading by the end of 2018. Even the toilets at Brightside felt like a fun throwback with avocado-coloured sinks set against a mustard yellow tile backdrop. I often skip past roadside cafes and restaurants for fear that the food will be poor and the prices will be high. But Brightside wasn't like this. The menu features an extensive range of options through morning, noon and night. I opted for the 'Hot Honey Fried Chicken Burger' (£14.95) and my parents opted for the 'Chicken Caesar' pizza (£13.95) and the 'Dirty Brisket Burger' (£16.45). Whilst we may not have had Eggo waffles (made popular by Stranger Things' Eleven), the dishes we did order hit the spot. My chicken burger with honey offered a great twist on normal flavours. And for the brisket burger it was even a winner with my dad who is quite picky when it comes to burgers. The pizza was a good size as well, and really felt value for money. Inside Elon Musk's Tesla diner of the future staffed by ROBOTS with drive-in movie screens & burgers in Cybertruck boxes Along with our food we tried out two of the diner's mocktails - 'Strawberry Smash' and 'Pop Goes Summer'. Both mocktails cost £6 and were made with Ceder's non-alcoholic spirit. Pop Goes Summer had an extra layer of fun, with popping candy around the rim of the glass. As for Strawberry Smash, it was a great mix of strawberry, pineapple and lime. Moving onto dessert, we shared the 'Berry Ice Cream Sandwich' (£6.95) and a 'Banoffee Sundae' (£5.95). The berry ice cream sandwich was essentially a giant profiterole with soft serve ice cream, berries and meringue. 10 There are also some great mocktails on the menu Credit: Instagram 10 Outside there is a large garden, with plenty of seating and vibrant parasols Credit: Instagram 10 Even the toilets feature a fun 70s design with avocado-coloured sinks and mustard yellow tiles Credit: Instagram Both desserts felt like the ultimate childhood throwbacks. It might be just me, but I don't see banoffee desserts around much anymore, so this treat really did transport you back in time. When the bill came I was pleasantly surprised, as all of that came to around £68. The price was less than I had expected thanks to their Thursday offer that lets you buy a dessert for £1 alongside any adult main meal. 10 The diner is also dog friendly and has activities available for children Credit: Cyann Fielding 10 The desserts include a berry ice cream sandwich, which was a great childhood throwback Credit: Cyann Fielding 10 We tried the brisket burger and hot honey chicken burger which were great Credit: Cyann Fielding This wasn't the only great offer the diner had - on Tuesdays, you can buy one pizza get one free after 3pm. And on Wednesdays, kids eat free after 3pm, making it an affordable option for families needing to take a break on the motorway. Outside the diner there is also a brightly coloured seating area, with large parasols so you can get some fresh air too. Dogs are welcome too, and there is plenty to keep the kids entertained with Brightside branded merch to peruse and a number of books available to borrow whilst you sit and eat. Whilst the diner isn't your typical American-style joint, Brightside definitely mixes the best of British 70s/80s culture with retro American diners. I personally think Eleven would love it... as well as everyone else in Hawkins. There are three Brightside diners located across Devon and Cornwall, and a fourth location can be found in Rutland, just under an hour from Leicester. The diner in Exeter was the first location to open, opposite from Exeter Racecourse, back in 2023. There is also a 'Karen attraction' in the UK that Brits can't get enough of. 'Underrated' Adam Sandler comedy to watch on Netflix after Happy Gilmore 2

The long-awaited sequel to Adam Sandler's 1996 comedy sporting film Happy Gilmore was released on Netflix on July 25, but many fans have been quick to praise one of his more 'underrated' films Adam Sandler fans have recommended one of the actor's most 'underrated' comedies well worth watching after the release of Happy Gilmore 2. The long-awaited sequel to the golfing comedy will be released on Netflix today, July 25. ‌ The original film, released in 1996, sees Sandler in the titular role as an aspiring - though struggling - hockey player who discovers he's a gifted golfer so enters the PGA Tour in a bid to win a cash prize to save his grandmother's home. Happy has a fiery temper though, which leads to many hilarious outbursts on the green. ‌ Adam Sandler fans are delighted to see he's picked up his golfing clubs again, with many keen to enjoy other films from the comedy actor's CV - and Netflix has plenty of options to choose from. ‌ There's one film though that's been branded 'underrated', with many film lovers recommending it to Netflix viewers. In a post on Reddit, one person sought recommendations ahead of Happy Gilmore 2's release. They titled their post 'Best Adam Sandler movies!!!' They then elaborated: 'Please let me know your favourite Adam Sandler films I can watch tonight. I watched Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore last night and loved it. ‌ 'Any suggestions please even if I've seen them not going to put a long list on here, just tell me your favourites so I can maybe put them on my list'. The recommendations flooded the comments section, with many people keen to suggest the 2006 comedy fantasy film, Click. It tells the story of workaholic Michael Newman, played by Sandler, who's keen to get ahead and succeed in his career. ‌ When Christopher Walken's Morty gives him a universal remote control that allows him to control his life by pausing, rewinding and fast-forwarding moments, he initially believes he's hit the jackpot and can 'skip' all the things he doesn't want to partake in. The remote soon begins overriding his desires though, and he finds himself missing out on many significant moments in his family's life. ‌ The film wasn't well received by critics though it did earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Hair and Make-up due to the effective time-jumping transformations portrayed on screen. One Reddit user commented: 'Click is such an underrated movie.' Another said: 'Click, such a fun and enjoyable movie that leaves you sobbing like a baby after it's over'. ‌ A third said: 'Click. 2006 was different.' While a fourth declared: 'Click is a superb movie'. Someone else shared a string of recommendations, writing: 'Spanglish. 50 first dates. Uncut Gems. Click. (Almost forgot this masterpiece)'. Another person said: 'Little Nicky and Click are ones I feel I don't see/hear recommended enough. Oh! And also Spanglish'. ‌ And another commented: 'Any of his movies where he's actually acting, rather than mugging [for] the camera: Click, Uncut Gems, 50 First Dates, Spanglish all come to mind.' Lots of other fans were keen to praise the 2019 crime thriller, Uncut Gems, which saw Sandler step away from his usual 'funny man' persona entirely. One fan said: 'Uncut Gems - a masterpiece of paranoia and anxiety.' Another commented: 'He plays a very unlikeable character and his decision making is driving you insane lol, but it's such an amazing movie really'. A third agreed: 'This. Incredible movie and performance.' Many others also praised 1998's The Wedding Singer and 2004's 50 First Dates, both of which saw Adam Sandler opposite Drew Barrymore.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 'big risk' as 'it dawns on them what they've lost'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's multi-million-dollar Netflix deal is rumoured to be ending in September, with the couple taking a major financial blow Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are taking a 'big risk' after reports their Netflix deal is not being renewed. It is understood the Sussexes penned a multi-million-dollar deal with the streaming giant in 2020. ‌ The contract was said to have been worth around $100 million and saw them producing a raft of content, including the Harry and Meghan docuseries. However the follow-up programmes failed to echo its success, with reports With Love, Meghan, failed to make the top 300 most-watched shows for 2025. ‌ The couple's deal with Spotify, thought to be worth around $20 million, was 'mutually' scrapped in released Archetypes, presented by Meghan on the platform, which reached number one in the streaming charts. ‌ Daily Mail Royal Editor Rebecca English has now questioned what the Sussexes next move will be. She believes that relying mostly on Meghan's As Ever lifestyle brand poses a 'big risk'. Speaking on the Palace Confidential, she said: 'Harry's got a couple of paying gigs now, he's still the Chief Impact Officer of the therapy company Better Up, he's got his travel firm, but these are not the sort of things that would pay for or afford the sort of lifestyle they have become used to. ‌ 'You have to ask yourself, is another book in the offing or are they literally betting everything on the As Ever brand and the rose and jams and teas affording that lifestyle in the future, that is a big risk.' The Daily Mail's Diary Editor Richard Eden believes it is 'dawning' on the Sussexes that they could have had taxpayer-funded security as well as multiple homes if they stayed as working Royals. However the couple decided to step down from their roles in 2020 to start a new life in Montecito, California. Eden said: 'Remember, if they'd stayed in the Royal Family, what they would have had. You would have had all that security, paid for by taxpayers, they would have had a home in Scotland, a home in London, a country home, all that would have come with their positions. ‌ "They've chosen to give that up and I think it might be slowly dawning on Harry and Meghan what they have lost.' While there has been no official statement from Netflix, a source told The Sun that the deal had 'run its course'. They added: 'Netflix execs are well aware Meghan's priority now is her own brand, and they won't play second fiddle to that. 'Publicly, there will not be a statement, and of course, if things change dramatically, they'd be open to a one-off project down the line. But for Harry, especially, this will be a blow. It's a huge loss of revenue."
