'Underrated' Adam Sandler comedy to watch on Netflix after Happy Gilmore 2

Daily Mirror5 days ago
The long-awaited sequel to Adam Sandler's 1996 comedy sporting film Happy Gilmore was released on Netflix on July 25, but many fans have been quick to praise one of his more 'underrated' films
Adam Sandler fans have recommended one of the actor's most 'underrated' comedies well worth watching after the release of Happy Gilmore 2. The long-awaited sequel to the golfing comedy will be released on Netflix today, July 25.

The original film, released in 1996, sees Sandler in the titular role as an aspiring - though struggling - hockey player who discovers he's a gifted golfer so enters the PGA Tour in a bid to win a cash prize to save his grandmother's home. Happy has a fiery temper though, which leads to many hilarious outbursts on the green.

Adam Sandler fans are delighted to see he's picked up his golfing clubs again, with many keen to enjoy other films from the comedy actor's CV - and Netflix has plenty of options to choose from.

There's one film though that's been branded 'underrated', with many film lovers recommending it to Netflix viewers.
In a post on Reddit, one person sought recommendations ahead of Happy Gilmore 2's release. They titled their post 'Best Adam Sandler movies!!!'
They then elaborated: 'Please let me know your favourite Adam Sandler films I can watch tonight. I watched Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore last night and loved it.

'Any suggestions please even if I've seen them not going to put a long list on here, just tell me your favourites so I can maybe put them on my list'.
The recommendations flooded the comments section, with many people keen to suggest the 2006 comedy fantasy film, Click.
It tells the story of workaholic Michael Newman, played by Sandler, who's keen to get ahead and succeed in his career.

When Christopher Walken's Morty gives him a universal remote control that allows him to control his life by pausing, rewinding and fast-forwarding moments, he initially believes he's hit the jackpot and can 'skip' all the things he doesn't want to partake in.
The remote soon begins overriding his desires though, and he finds himself missing out on many significant moments in his family's life.

The film wasn't well received by critics though it did earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Hair and Make-up due to the effective time-jumping transformations portrayed on screen.
One Reddit user commented: 'Click is such an underrated movie.'
Another said: 'Click, such a fun and enjoyable movie that leaves you sobbing like a baby after it's over'.

A third said: 'Click. 2006 was different.' While a fourth declared: 'Click is a superb movie'.
Someone else shared a string of recommendations, writing: 'Spanglish. 50 first dates. Uncut Gems. Click. (Almost forgot this masterpiece)'.
Another person said: 'Little Nicky and Click are ones I feel I don't see/hear recommended enough. Oh! And also Spanglish'.

And another commented: 'Any of his movies where he's actually acting, rather than mugging [for] the camera: Click, Uncut Gems, 50 First Dates, Spanglish all come to mind.'
Lots of other fans were keen to praise the 2019 crime thriller, Uncut Gems, which saw Sandler step away from his usual 'funny man' persona entirely.
One fan said: 'Uncut Gems - a masterpiece of paranoia and anxiety.'
Another commented: 'He plays a very unlikeable character and his decision making is driving you insane lol, but it's such an amazing movie really'.
A third agreed: 'This. Incredible movie and performance.'
Many others also praised 1998's The Wedding Singer and 2004's 50 First Dates, both of which saw Adam Sandler opposite Drew Barrymore.

Superman fans are just discovering little-known link to another iconic movie

James Gunn wrote and directed the new Superman film, hitting a reset button on the DC universe with David Corenswet taking over as the iconic superhero. Gunn is also behind a divisive and unexpected 2002 film Superman fans are surprised after learning that director and writer James Gunn penned a divisive 2002 film before his foray into the superhero world. The new Superman movie stars David Corenswet in the titular role, with Nicholas Hoult as antagonist Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane. ‌ It marks a reboot of the Superman franchise and is the first instalment of the new DC Universe, with James Gunn at the helm after leaving Marvel. The creator experienced success with the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, which is part of the MCU, before his departure to join rivals at DC. ‌ After some initial criticism, the film has been praised by superhero fanatics and film buffs alike, currently boasting a Rotten Tomatoes score of 83%. ‌ Some fans, however, didn't realise James Gunn wrote the mystery comedy adventure film, Scooby-Doo, back in 2002. The film had a stellar cast made up of Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini, Matthew Lillard and more but still pulled in just 32% on Rotten Tomatoes. It received mainly negative reviews upon its release but has established itself as a bit of a cult classic. On Reddit, one Scooby Doo fan was keen to point out the film's link to the lauded new superhero movie. They shared images of the film posters of both Scooby Doo and Superman and simply captioned them: 'Same writer btw [by the way].' In the comments section, people were keen to share their thoughts. One person said: 'How am I only just learning this." ‌ Another said: 'Yeah and that's why they are both great." A third shared: 'My one wish is for James Gunn to use his Hollywood clout to make a Scooby Doo 3 with the original cast." ‌ A fourth commented: 'Gunn has grown as a writer. Monsters Unleashed is one of my favourite films from him.' Someone else replied: 'Well, tell him to de-grow so we can get another Scooby Doo movie." Another observed similarities between Superman and Scooby Doo: 'Both movies have an unmasking, both movies have a strange dog, both movies have a kiss at the end." ‌ Then one Reddit user simply said: 'James Gunn sure has come a LONG way from Scooby Doo." And another said: '[Ah], James Gunn... the man who hated Scrappy Doo so much he went out of his way to assassinate the character permanently. Loved both movies! EXACTLY who and what Superman needed to be.' And someone decided to share their thoughts on the new Superman film. They penned: 'I thought it was the best Superman movie since Reeves. I enjoyed the cameos and the other heroes who show up (trying to be spoiler free but Nathan Fillion was amazing). 'Thought Krypto was a fun addition but not over the top. Enjoyed that it didn't rehash the origin story all over again. 'The plot was easy to follow but still interesting. The tone and vibe of the movie are much better than some of the stuff we saw with like Snyder DCEU. 'I'd honestly say it reminded me of Toby McGuire Spider-Man type superhero flicks but with updated effects and budget."

The Grinch and Blue Lights most watched film and programme in Northern Ireland

Broadcast TV, such as BBC and UTV, was found to continue to dominate viewing habits in the region, but streamers such as Netflix and video sharing platforms like YouTube are on the rise. Ofcom's latest Media Nations report shows that people in Northern Ireland watched an average of four hours and 48 minutes of video content at home per day in 2024, an 18-minute year-on-year increase. The region once again watched the most live broadcast TV of all the nations (two hours and six minutes) and was the only nation which had an increase in live viewing. Almost three quarters of households (74%) were found to have at least one subscription-video-on-demand (SVoD) service, with Amazon Prime Video the most popular, present in 59% of homes ahead of Netflix. In terms of broadcast TV, the BBC held an 18% share of total video viewing, followed by ITV/UTV with a 15% share. However, in a reflection of changing viewing habits, YouTube comes in next with a 12% share ahead of other TV channels and streamers like Netflix. Individuals in Northern Ireland spent 35 minutes per day on average viewing YouTube across all devices in the home in 2024. Meanwhile the Grinch was the most watched film on TV in 2024, ahead of Blue Lights, which was the most watched programme in 2023. The Grinch was the most-watched title last year, averaging 637,000 viewers on Netflix on TV sets across the whole year. The BBC took the next two spots, with the season two premiere of Blue Lights averaging 556,000 viewers, followed by Christmas Day's Gavin & Stacey: The Finale, averaging 478,000. Entertainment on UTV also made the top 10, with an episode of I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and The 1% Club ranking fifth and sixth, averaging 384,000 and 367,000 viewers respectively. The report also found that TV channels BBC One (33%) and UTV (32%) were the most popular sources for news about Northern Ireland. Radio featured much more prominently in Northern Ireland for local news compared to other nations with BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle and Cool FM/Downtown also appearing in the top five most used news sources used for news about Northern Ireland. The region saw strong performance for local radio, with more than six in 10 adults (63.9%) listening to local commercial radio at least once a week – higher than in England, Scotland, Wales and the UK as a whole. In terms of newer technology, four in ten households (41%) in Northern Ireland have a smart speaker, more than double the proportion with a DAB radio in the home (19%). In terms of podcasts, nearly one in five (19%) adults in Northern Ireland were found to listen to them at least once a week in quarter one of 2025. However, this remains lower than the UK reach figure of 22.4%, and year-on-year growth in Northern Ireland has slowed again while other nations' have increased. Jonathan Rose, Ofcom's Northern Ireland director, said the report illustrates the enduring popularity of local radio. 'People in Northern Ireland are spending more time than ever in front of their screens,' he said. 'Broadcast TV remains popular but streamers like Amazon Prime Video and video-sharing platforms like YouTube are also now a firmly established part of our daily viewing diet. 'Our research also shows the enduring popularity of radio and especially local radio. 'Listeners in Northern Ireland have a real connection with local voices as well as news and views that reflects what's happening on their own doorstep.'
