Eddie Vedder Scores A Hit Song — Without Pearl Jam

Forbes01-05-2025
While he's famous for being the frontman of the band Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder also enjoys success as a soloist. Though he has achieved incredible commercial acclaim leading that group, he occasionally releases music under his own name — but not very often. This week, one of the rocker's latest offerings brings him back to bestseller status in the United Kingdom, and it earns him a special win.
Vedder's take on the tune 'Save It for Later' debuts on the Official Physical Singles chart this week. It opens at No. 62 on the U.K. ranking, which lists only the bestselling songs on formats like CD, vinyl, and cassette. Those physical versions have become increasingly popular once again after nearly disappearing in the wake of iTunes and streaming platforms reshaping the music industry more than a decade ago. Now, superfans of musicians love to buy songs and albums on items they can actually hold.
'Save It for Later' marks Vedder's third solo appearance on the Official Physical Singles chart as a soloist. He first reached the tally almost exactly 15 years ago in 2010 with 'Better Days.' That tune remains his longest-charting and highest-peaking solo hit, as it soared all the way to No. 15, and it held on for five frames.
'Long Way' followed a few years ago, in 2021, and rose to No. 53.
Vedder's latest cut was issued as part of Record Store Day. Fans in the U.K. picked up the double-sided 12-inch vinyl, which includes just two tracks, in large enough quantities to turn it into a bestseller. Only 4,000 copies were made available of the double single, though it wasn't reported exactly how many units were sold to push the title onto the list.
Last week's U.K. rankings were filled to the brim with Record Store Day exclusives, but Vedder's project was not among them. Interestingly, it finally reaches the tally this frame, becoming a bestseller days after dozens of other such releases disappeared.
The double single also features 'Room at the Top,' making the effort a pair of covers by Vedder. 'Save It for Later' was originally made famous by The English Beat. Vedder recorded his rendition for the FX TV series The Bear and turned it into a minor commercial hit last year. He also reworked Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' 'Room at the Top' for a different television program — Bad Monkey, which fans can watch on Apple TV – and both of them make up a special EP of sorts.

19 Y2K Wild Fads That Would "Baffle" Gen Z

As time passes and technology evolves, there are certain trends and habits that simply fade out of popularity. And there's no better example than those of the '90s and early 2000s... That's why when Redditor u/ToeKnown9863 asked, "What's a '90s/2000s trend that would baffle kids today?" Thousands of Gen X'ers and millennials shared the good, the bad, and the ugly of Y2K trends. From burning CDs to Pogs — here are 19 of their best responses: "Downloading music off Limewire to iTunes, running to Walmart while it downloads, buying blank CDs, and burning them once it's downloaded. Then, thinking of a cool name for your new CD." "Playing literally one video game for the entire summer, no online walkthroughs. If you wanted a hint, you needed to buy a paper guidebook, hope your friend knew the tricks, or call a 900 number for help." "Trapper keepers confuse me now, yet I literally screamed to high heaven to get my mom to buy me the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles one." "Not just having a landline, but SHARING a landline." "Pogs: We just collected little cardboard circles to play a dumb, boring game." "Buying ringtones." "There was no 'Google Maps.' You had a huge book sitting in your glove box. If you didn't know the way, you had to literally chart it and try to follow it. Or just memorize the whole thing." "Chain emails: I'd be so embarrassed to do that today..." "Having to wait a week for 10 photos to be processed and printed." "If you missed a new episode of a TV show, you just missed it." "Dialing *69 so you could figure out the phone number that just called you. No, we didn't all have Caller ID, and yes, it cost money." "Having to run to the bathroom/kitchen/do chores during a commercial break and having a sibling yell, 'It's back on,' so you could return to the TV in time." "Waiting for songs to come on the radio so you could record them on a cassette tape, and getting mad if the DJ talked over the intro. Kids today will never know the struggle of timing it perfectly and still ending up with the DJ's voice at the beginning." "The simple act of being bored while waiting in a doctor's office, traveling, or attending family parties, etc." "When swing music and dancing went from nonexistent to full-blown movement from 1996–1998. That trend was gone in a flash." "Buying a magazine to know what will be on TV this week." "Riding to a friend's house to see if they could hang out: If they couldn't, you were just like, 'Okay, I'll start my 2-mile bike ride back home to find something else to do.'" "When TLC was actually 'The Learning Channel.' It was like a no-frills version of the Discovery Channel, except it came standard on cable. You had to pay extra for Discovery." "Living in the moment: Because there were no smartphones, no one cared about documenting every moment of their lives for likes and views. And if we did, we used a digital or disposable camera." Did you remember any of these trends/habits? What are some other aspects of the '90s and 2000s that would shock kids today? Tell us about them in comments or answer anonymously using the form below!

Chappell Roan's Recent Smash Returns To Its All-Time Peak As Her Latest Debuts

Chappell Roan's new single 'The Subway' has become another breakout smash for the multi-genre singer-songwriter. The tune opens in impressive positions on a number of charts in the United Kingdom and even manages to become another leader for the Grammy winner. As 'The Subway' gets off to a strong start, the excitement generated by the new release helps several of Roan's most famous tracks become bestsellers again. 'The Giver' Returns to Its All-Time Peak Earlier in 2025, Roan delivered 'The Giver,' her first single since winning the Grammy for Best New Artist. That track — which helped her venture into country for the first time — rises from No. 5 to No. 2 on the Official Physical Singles chart. That position marks the all-time high for 'The Giver' on the U.K.'s list of the bestselling tracks available on any physical format. The cut has reached the runner-up spot before, and 'The Subway' helps it find its way there again. 'Good Luck, Babe!' Returns to the Top 10 Roan fills a pair of spaces inside the highest tier on the Official Physical Singles chart this week. As 'The Giver' improves from No. 5 to No. 2, 'Good Luck, Babe!' — which helped Roan establish a global fanbase — ascends from No. 12 to No. 10. The pop superstar almost claims a trio of top 10 hits on the Official Physical Singles roster, but 'Pink Pony Club' just misses out on helping her accomplish that feat, as it dips from No. 10 to No. 11. 'The Subway' Helps Both 'Good Luck, Babe!' and 'The Giver' 'The Subway' has clearly played a role in where 'Good Luck, Babe!' and 'The Giver' appear on the Official Physical Singles chart, even though Roan's latest release has not yet become available on any physical format, so it's not even eligible for the list it seems to be impacting in a roundabout way. Chappell Roan's New No. 1 Hit 'The Subway' leads both the Official Singles and Official Singles Streaming charts. Roan doubles her total number of champions on the main ranking of the most consumed songs in the U.K. and scores her first leader on the streaming-only tally. The track also launches at No. 3 on both the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads rosters.

Taylor Swift Soars On iTunes Following Album Announcement

In less than two months, Taylor Swift will release her new album The Life of a Showgirl. In the past few days, the superstar has given the world much to talk about regarding her latest era, from the title and release date (October 3) to hints about what it may sound like, with pop superproducers Max Martin and Shellback helming the project. Following the unveiling of the cover and multiple photos showing the inspiration for this latest chapter, Swift's catalog has soared on iTunes in the U.S., as excitement for the full-length has translated into renewed interest in everything she's ever released. 16 Taylor Swift Albums Surge on iTunes 16 projects by Swift appear on the iTunes Top Albums ranking in America. That would be a career achievement for almost any other star, but for her, it simply means she's made a major announcement. As of this writing, all 16 projects are on the rise, and several have even managed to break back into the highest tier on the tally, beating out a handful of new releases that dropped just days ago from other beloved acts. Taylor Swift's Two Top 10 Bestsellers Swift fills two slots inside the top 10 on iTunes's ranking of the top-selling albums in the U.S. Reputation sits highest, advancing to No. 7, while Red (Taylor's Version) — the one that includes a message from the singer herself — jumps more than 40 spaces to land at No. 10. Seven Additional Top 40 Successes Seven other projects by Swift live inside the top 40 on the iTunes Top Albums chart, including Lover, Folklore (Deluxe Edition), Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition), The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, Evermore (Deluxe Edition), 1989 (Taylor's Version) (Deluxe), and the bonus track version of her self-titled debut. Only two of Swift's albums appear below the halfway mark on the 200-spot ranking. Fearless reenters at No. 130, while Folklore: Long Pond Studio Sessions (From the Disney+ Special) (Deluxe Edition) – yes, that's the full title – is down at No. 158. Taylor Swift May Have Additional Sales Spikes Coming Soon In an era of streaming dominance, Swift is one of a few acts that can still sell albums in huge quantities — not just when she delivers something new, but seemingly at all times. Sales skyrocket whenever there's a hint, revelation, or announcement. This uptick in purchases may be momentary, but it likely won't be the only one of this era. When she announces and then drops a single — and eventually the album itself — several of her previous full-lengths, if not all of them, will likely return to iTunes and soar again.
