Ayyanna criticises previous YSRCP govt for neglecting Thandava reservoir
After releasing water from the Thandava reservoir, considered as the major project of the district, here on Sunday, Assembly Speaker Ayyanna Patrudu announced, 'The Thandava reservoir project will provide water to crops in Narsipatnam, Payakaraopeta and Kakinada district.'
About 51,465 acres will be used for irrigation purpose through the reservoir. Of this, 32,689 acres will be supplied to Anakapalli district and 18,776 acres to Kakinada district, he added.
The Assembly Speaker lauded the efforts of Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha for undertaking 18 development works utilising disaster relief fund of Rs 2.1 crore. In addition, 57 works have been sanctioned for Rs 4.2 crore. He suggested that water should be utilised cautiously as the current water storage is 2.92 tmcft, while the water storage capacity of the reservoir is 4.96 tmcft.
Ayyanna Patrudu further informed that the road construction from Nathavaram to Thandava reservoir will be commenced soon by the roads and buildings department at a cost of Rs 8 crore.
Speaking on the occasion, Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha said, 'Thousands of farmers depend on the Thandava project. The reservoir was neglected by the previous government, and after the formation of the NDA government, the reservoir gates were repaired. We are facilitating irrigation water to 50,000 acres through the reservoir.'
The Home Minister stated that the NDA government was giving top priority to farmers and as part of it, the government is providing minimum support prices for crops.
Thandava project chairman Karaka Satyanarayana, market yard chairman G V Venkataramana, Tuni market yard chairman, Jana Sena Party constituency In-charge Suryachandra, Natavaram mandal TDP president Nandipalli Ramana, officials, leaders and farmers participated in the programme.

Among the most vocal Congress leaders in Karnataka, state cooperation minister K N Rajanna was forced to resign from the Siddaramaiah Cabinet on Monday, two days after saying that alleged voter list irregularities in the Mahadevapura Assembly constituency in Bengaluru occurred on the Congress's watch. Rajanna's statement embarrassed the Congress leadership as it came barely two days after Rahul Gandhi's allegation that over 1 lakh votes were 'stolen' in Mahadevapura in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, helping the BJP win the Bangalore Central parliamentary constituency. Ever since the Congress came to power in Karnataka in 2023, the Madhugiri MLA has put the party leadership on the back foot with his remarks on several issues. He has also been a bellwether of the power struggle between the party factions led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar. On Saturday, Rajanna, 74, said the Congress-led state government had failed to act when draft voter rolls were prepared. That his remarks came a day after Gandhi held a massive 'Vote Adhikar Rally' in Bengaluru also did not go down well with several Congress leaders. An influential figure in the state's cooperative sector, Rajanna is a four-time legislator belonging to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) Valmiki community. He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council in 1998 as a Congress nominee. He left the party in 2004 over the denial of a ticket for his debut Assembly election, which he then contested, successfully, as a Janata Dal (Secular) candidate from the now-defunct Bellavi constituency. After Siddaramaiah left the JD(S) to join the Congress in 2006, Rajanna was among the leaders who followed in his footsteps, to remain a Siddaramaiah loyalist since. Though his first two elections on the Congress ticket – from Madhugiri in the 2008 Assembly polls and then a bypoll in the same seat in 2009 – proved a failure, he was eventually elected from the Madhugiri Assembly seat in 2013 and then again in 2023. Rajanna has also served as the president of the Karnataka State Co-operative Apex Bank for two terms. Four months after the Congress stormed to power by winning the state Assembly polls in May 2023, Rajanna caused heartburn in the Shivakumar faction after he called for the need of three more Deputy CMs besides Shivakumar. This was among the Siddaramaiah camp's initial moves targeting the Deputy CM as it reportedly felt that too much power was concentrated with Shivakumar, who has also been the Bengaluru Development and Water Resources Minister besides heading the state Congress unit. Rajanna reiterated this demand in early 2024, before going silent on the issue. Later, he was also vocal in his demand to replace Shivakumar as the state party chief by reminding the Congress high command of its 'one person, one post' policy. Earlier this year, during the Karnataka Legislature's Budget Session, Rajanna dropped a bombshell when he alleged there was an attempt to 'honey trap' him by a 'gang' that had targeted 48 leaders cutting across party lines. Though there was then a buzz in state political circles that the 'gang' was 'linked' to a Congress leader, the Karnataka police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which investigated the case, did not find any evidence behind Rajanna's allegation. A month ago, Rajanna again put the Congress leadership in a spot after he publicly objected to All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala, holding a meeting with state government officials. Rajanna had said that while it was within Surjewala's powers to meet party legislators and leaders, a meeting with government officials was 'unconstitutional'.

TN to launch door delivery of ration items to elderly, differently abled
Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin will launch a scheme on Tuesday to deliver ration items to the doors of over 21 lakh beneficiaries—senior citizens and the differently abled—the Tamil Nadu government said. The "Chief Minister's Thayumanavar Scheme" will be launched by Stalin here, wherein ration items including rice and sugar will be delivered to the intended beneficiaries at their doorsteps, an official release said. Senior citizens of over 70 years and differently abled ration card holders are the targeted beneficiaries of the scheme. Around 20.42 lakh senior citizens and over 1.27 lakh differently abled persons would benefit from the scheme, it said. As part of the initiative, the ration items will be door-delivered to the beneficiaries every second Saturday and Sunday and the relevant details have already been received from the Food and Consumer Protection department and shared with the field staff concerned, it said. The staff will deliver the items to eligible beneficiaries. They would be provided with an electronic weighing machine and e-PoS (point of sale) machine as part of the initiative, it said. "The pro-people move would cost the government a sum of Rs 30.16 crore and the government aims to ensure the welfare of the marginalised sections of the society," the release added.

CM Stalin inaugurates statues, memorial halls in Pollachi
COIMBATORE: Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated the statues of former chief minister K Kamaraj, former minister C Subramaniam, former MLAs VK Palaniswami and Pollachi N Mahalingam in remembrance of their contribution in implementing the Parambikulam Aliyar irrigation project (PAP), at Pollachi in Coimbatore on Monday. CM Stalin also inaugurated two halls in memory of VK Palaniswami and Pollachi N Mahalingam, and a memorial hall at a cost of Rs 2.83 crore in the Aliyar dam park for those who lost their lives in the accident that occurred during the construction of PAP. He named the office complex of the Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department in Pollachi as 'C Subramaniam Complex' and inaugurated the statues at the premises during the event. In the 2021-22 assembly session, Stalin had announced the construction of the memorial hall and bust of VK Palaniswami Gounder, who was key behind the development of PAP. Two new two-storey halls were constructed to host programmes such as training and seminars for agricultural luminaries. Following completion of work, Stalin inaugurated the two-storey 'VK Palaniswami Hall' and 'Pollachi N Mahalingam Hall', built at a cumulative cost of Rs 4.29 crore. Later, he visited the photo exhibition set up at VK Palaniswami Hall to educate the younger generation and the general public about the importance of water management and PAP.
