Jason Mackey makes bold claim about new Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers

USA Today23-06-2025
Aaron Rodgers hasn't even been a Steeler for a whole month, but Jason Mackey of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has ranked him above some of Steel City sports superstars.
On Monday, Mackey named Rodgers the most important person in Pittsburgh sports — over Steelers OLB T.J. Watt, HC Mike Tomlin, Pirates' Paul Skenes, and Penguins' Sidney Crosby, and his selection process came down to one aspect — winning.
Mackey argued Skenes and Crosby couldn't be selected due to a lack of team success, while Watt's down year in 2024 may have hurt his chances.
Tomlin's 'never had a losing record' feat, while an impressive, doesn't excuse some other flaws, like the lack of playoff wins or his coaching staff decisions.
Ultimately, Rodgers was the only one left in Mackey's eyes who fit the bill the best as the most important person in Pittsburgh sports — claiming that his impact on the Steelers' wins and losses in 2025 justified the top spot.
The Rodgers selection is certainly a difficult decision to make — as while Pittsburgh sports is loaded with superstars, the big three franchises have struggled where it matters most over recent years.

Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti responds to letter sent to NCAA advocating for Michigan

It was a bit of a shocker earlier in the week to find out that Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti reportedly sent a letter to the NCAA advocating for Michigan not to face any more penalties for the alleged advanced sign-stealing allegations. You knew that it would be a topic of conversation with that news dropping right before Big Ten football media days, and sure enough, it didn't take long for the media to ask Petitti about it when he stepped to the podium to deliver his press conference on Tuesday. Being the politician and even-keeled spokesman for one of the biggest brands in sports, Petitti was not about to take the bate, but did confirm that he sent a letter. "We did submit a letter," Petitti said. "It's not uncommon in proceedings for a conference office to weigh in. I'm not gonna address what the contents of the letter we sent are, and because it's an ongoing process, I don't think it's appropriate for me to comment whether (the punishment) is enough or not while there are individuals deliberating. I don't think that's the right thing to do in the process." Petitti refusing to discuss the contents of the letter is not surprising, and neither is the reported contents of the letter coming from ESPN's Dan Wetzel. It's still an ongoing investigation, and Petitti isn't going to throw gasoline on the fire of a very controversial topic. Also, his advocating for one of the best and biggest brands in the Big Ten isn't surprising at all. He acted swiftly and appropriately early on, and now it's time to get in the bunker and try to keep the interests of the Big Ten above everything else. Keeping Michigan in the picture of the College Football Playoff is exactly what he is expected to do. Ohio State fans may not like his position -- in fact most in the college football world won't -- but it's better for the Big Ten to have Michigan being Michigan. The good news is that this whole thing is going to be over soon, probably right before or after the 2025 college footall season begins. Then, maybe we can all get on with our lives and just focus on football on the field. Steelers edge defenders T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig rolling in style at training camp

When it comes to the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp, you never know what you are going to see. As players arrive on Wednesday. We've seen Rolls-Royces, tractors, and everything in between. And now we have E-bikes. Steelers edge defender Nick Herbig showed up to training camp on Wednesday with not one but two E-bikes in tow. According to ESPN reporter Brooke Pryor, the smaller bike, as seen in the post below, belongs to Herbig, and he was just hauling the larger bike for fellow edge defender T.J. Watt. The Steelers are in their 55th year of training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. The players always bring some of their comforts of home as the team, for the most part, stays in the dorms for the entire training camp. There have been notable exceptions over the years, but it's good to see Watt, the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, is willing to bunk up with his teammates on campus and isn't demanding any special treatment. Wednesday is check-in day with the team's first training camp practice scheduled for Thursday, July 24.
