Jason Mackey makes bold claim about new Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers
On Monday, Mackey named Rodgers the most important person in Pittsburgh sports — over Steelers OLB T.J. Watt, HC Mike Tomlin, Pirates' Paul Skenes, and Penguins' Sidney Crosby, and his selection process came down to one aspect — winning.
Mackey argued Skenes and Crosby couldn't be selected due to a lack of team success, while Watt's down year in 2024 may have hurt his chances.
Tomlin's 'never had a losing record' feat, while an impressive, doesn't excuse some other flaws, like the lack of playoff wins or his coaching staff decisions.
Ultimately, Rodgers was the only one left in Mackey's eyes who fit the bill the best as the most important person in Pittsburgh sports — claiming that his impact on the Steelers' wins and losses in 2025 justified the top spot.
The Rodgers selection is certainly a difficult decision to make — as while Pittsburgh sports is loaded with superstars, the big three franchises have struggled where it matters most over recent years.

Steelers named best fit for veteran receiver with multiple Pro Bowl selections
The Pittsburgh Steelers have been named the best fit for one of the top remaining free agents on the market. Kevin Patra listed the Steelers as the top landing spot for wide receiver Keenan Allen, who spent the 2024 campaign with the Chicago Bears. "If the Steelers want to finally break through their playoff doldrums, why not keep the party going with another veteran searching for a ring? Allen has dealt with injuries and struggled at times last year in Chicago, but he can still generate separation and would provide Aaron Rodgers with another experienced player who understands the nuances of the position," Patra wrote. Allen wasn't as effective as he usually is in 2024, as the veteran tallied 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games with the Bears. Just two years ago, in 2023 with the Los Angeles Chargers, Allen posted 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns with a career-high 108 receptions. The Steelers need to add a capable No.2 receiver to pair with DK Metcalf, and though Allen isn't the most dynamic player, the 33-year-old could provide adequate production as a secondary pass-catcher in Arthur Smith's offense. The six-time Pro Bowler would also be a solid security blanket for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and take a ton of pressure off Metcalf, who is set to carry most of the receiving load this year with George Pickens getting moved to the Dallas Cowboys. During his 12-year tenure with the Chargers, Allen notched six 1,000-yard seasons and five campaigns with over 100 catches. Though he is no longer that level of a player, the California product would bolster Pittsburgh's offense and shouldn't demand a massive contract. Allen has stated that he isn't interested in playing with the Steelers. However, the 2017 AP Comeback Player of the Year also said that playing with Rodgers intrigues him, so there's still a chance he could land in Pittsburgh if all other options are off the table. Steelers' Aaron Rodgers predicts two offensive linemen to be involved in first camp fight
"No fighting something starts kick his ass" 😂😂@AaronRodgers12 #PMSLive Steelers training camp on Wednesday was filled with hilarious moments — courtesy of the relationship between Aaron Rodgers and one of his closest friends and fellow Yinzer Pat McAfee. Rodgers appeared on a special edition of The Pat McAfee Show live from Latrobe, where he joked that everyone is taking bets on which players will be the first to get into fights at training camp — picking two offensive linemen as his prediction. "We're all taking side bets on who the first fight is gonna be," Rodgers said. "And if I'm a betting man, I'm saying that either Zach Frazier or Mason McCormick will be involved in the first fight." Rodgers then added a hilarious one-liner when discussing the expectations at training camp. "That's one of the rules, no fighting," Rodgers said. "But if something starts, whip his a--." Jokes aside, the revamped Steelers roster checks a lot of boxes — including fiery personalities and trash talkers like CB Jalen Ramsey and WR DK Metcalf, two new acquisitions who continue to turn heads as camp rolls on. Aaron Rodgers, Steelers may start hot - but Pittsburgh needs patience
Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz and senior NFL writer Jori Epstein discuss the expectations for Pittsburgh and its new 41-year-old quarterback - including how a favorable early season schedule may end up creating unrealistic expectations for the squad in 2025. Hear the full conversation on 'Inside Coverage' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript We watched Jared Goff, I mean, a five-interception game. We forget a five-interception game that was just dreadful. If that happens for Aaron Rodgers, my God, it's just gonna be apoplectic. Like, everything's coming to a crashing, screeching halt, like fire Tomlin, get rid of everybody. The Steelers are bums. Like, there has to be some wiggle room in all of this to me. And that's what's maddening about it: I genuinely believe the Steelers have a really favorable open to the schedule, and then there's a lot of tough games. I could totally see the Steelers coming out of the gates hot and then coming back to Earth. And I don't think that has to mean that anything went tragically wrong. It's just like this is a process for Pittsburgh, and I don't, Jordan, I don't just, I don't know that the noise surrounding the Steelers will ever let that process play out the right way. Right. The Steelers start out with the Jets, Seahawks, Patriots, Vikings, bye, Browns, and then week seven Bengals. I wouldn't be surprised if they go on to the Bengals game undefeated. I mean, that's what, five and 0, and they'd have to buy it already, and Aaron Rodgers could be pretty fresh. This defense is good, and yes, they lost Minkah Fitzpatrick, but they got Jalen Ramsey, TJ Watt back. I mean, they've got a lot of good pieces. They picked up Darius Slay in the secondary. They extended safety Sean Elliott. And then you have the offense, and Aaron Rodgers is definitely the best quarterback they've had since Ben Roethlisberger, and especially Ben Roethlisberger at the end of his career. Aaron Rodgers is better, and I know you could say, oh, what did he do last year? He actually was not bad last year, and that was in his first year off the torn Achilles. So, I'm not saying he'll for sure play great, but I think there's a lot of reason to think he could. The question will be, can Aaron and DK get on the same page? Because they did lose George Pickens, and so it's not like they're super deep at receiver, but I think they have a lot of talent. Close
