Does Skims New Face Shapewear Actually Work? We Asked Experts
On July 29, Kim Kardashian's fashion brand, SKIMS, announced its first foray into the beauty world with the new product, and it comes with a seemingly impressive list of perks.
"Just Dropped: The Ultimate Face—our first-ever face innovation, made with signature sculpting fabric and infused with collagen yarns for ultra-soft jaw support," the brand announced, adding that it's a 'must-have face wrap' for 'everyday wear," which offers 'strong, targeted compression for shaping and sculpting.' FWIW, the wrap already sold out.
As with anything the Kardashians do—but particularly when it comes to their purposefully controversial products (looking at you, nipple bra)—the internet was awash with mixed opinions. "Guys, there's straight up no science to back this,' one person wrote on Instagram, before adding, 'Believe me, I've looked (I've always had a double chin)—save your money."
Another said, "I'd love to know more about the 'collagen yarns' because the website says it's only nylon and spandex,' while others added, 'Is it April Fools?" and "can't tell if this is trolling."
So, what's the deal? What is collagen yarn? Is this face wrap the new gua sha? And could it be the answer to youthful, snatched skin?
Cosmetic doctor Ahmed El Muntasar, widely known as The Aesthetics Doctor, is a trusted expert in non-invasive facial and body treatments (specialising in anti-ageing and body sculpting) and has shared his expertise on the Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap with Cosmopolitan UK. Used in the medical industry, collagen yarn is a textile infused with collagen to moisturize and improve skin texture. However, experts have 'not been able to formulate a product where the collagen can penetrate the skin deep enough to really make a significant difference. So, I think this could be a lot of marketing," Dr. El Muntasar says.
"Wearing a tight garment like this can temporarily reduce puffiness and swelling, and have an almost shaping effect because it reduces any fluid in that area," he says. "But then, ultimately, things will just go back to how they were before. It doesn't actually permanently change anything."
Generally, a product like this is safe to wear; however, continuous use can have consequences. "Constant pressure on the face can affect lymphatic drainage and the skin barrier, cause irritation, and so on," Dr. El Muntasar adds.
While the concept of using straps or bandages to shape the face has existed in varying cultures for centuries, the Kardashians' involvement in shaping modern beauty standards gives this chin strap an almost insidious undertone.
Yes, Korean beauty trends, particularly the "V-line" look, have popularised the specific use of chin straps for achieving a more sculpted jawline, and young women have been seen taping and strapping their faces for recent TikTok beauty trends.
But with a reach of over 6 million on the SKIMS Instagram account and 350 million on Kim's own, the perpetuation of altering young women's bodies on such a scale—and to the extreme of bandaging your face overnight—is worrying. This goes beyond face serums and moisturisers.
Alex Light, body confidence activist, shared her thoughts on the product in a video that has amassed over 7,000 likes and counting. 'Can you imagine men wearing these?" she said to the camera, after initially questioning whether the launch was a joke. 'Sculpt your jaw as you sleep because even when you rest, women aren't allowed to let go.'
Alex continues: "I really believe that this is so much deeper and more disturbing [than a product launch.] Our heads can't relax now; we have to compress all of our features because even our faces need to be tightly controlled and made to look as thin as possible."
With a rise in popularity for everything from weight loss injections to facial taping and buccal fat removal, it's hard not to feel cynical about Kim's latest product release. Yes, we all want to feel good about ourselves and take care of our skin, but the chances are a Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap isn't going to answer our problems. Instead, it only seeks to push the narrative that women need to be sculpted and snatched to be deemed worthy.
Now more than ever, we're treading the line between playful beauty enhancements and unrealistic, idealised standards of what beauty looks like, and unless people at the top (Kim, I'm looking @ you) understand that, societal norms are only going to far outgrow reality.

Surfing dogs dodge big waves before huge crowd at Pacifica's world championships
Iza leaned down into her board, slicing through the surf at Linda Mar Beach, the cheers from spectators filling the air. Moments before running aground, she leaped off the board and gave a shake. World Dog Surfing Championships with their humans. Dogs surfed alone and in tandem with their humans, in roiling waves that one human compared to a washing machine. Thousands of spectators filled the beach, braving fog and 55-degree air, many bringing their own dogs. They chatted with competitors, posed for photos with the surf dogs and dodged waves as they vied for the best spots to watch the action. 'I'm really enjoying it,' she said, taking a sip from her Baja Blast margarita to ward off the damp chill. 'The waves are bigger, and the dogs are hitting them harder, bless their little hearts.' Competitors ranged from Petey, a 6-year-old West Highland white terrier, to Cacau, a chocolate Labrador and the 2024 grand champion of the surf competition. This year's competition was foggy and cold, with messy chop that made wave-riding more challenging, several competitors said. Several surfers swam their dogs far out into the surf to find better waves, their pooches confidently perched on their boards as they sped through waves that reached 4 or 5 feet tall. 'It's a pleasure to be surfing with my best friend,' said Cacau's owner, Ivan Moreira, a former professional surfer who'd flown to California from his home in Rio de Janeiro for the event. Moreira had started training Cacau when the pup was just 3 months old, bringing her on a 12-foot paddleboard with Bono, another dog he owned, until she got used to being out in the waves. Also among the competitors was Faith, a 14-year-old pit bull. Faith, one of the oldest competitors, was attending her seventh Pacifica surf dog championships. Her owner, James Wall, found her abandoned in a parking garage around 2012, scared and dirty. Wall had never owned a pit bull but fell in love with her immediately. When he took her to a beach near their home in Santa Cruz, he saw other beachgoers training their dogs to surf. 'I thought, 'Hey, that would be cool. Let's see what we can do.'' Faith jumped right onto the board. They started in waist deep water, sending her to the shore on gentle rollers. Soon, anytime she saw him doing anything beach related, she started 'whimpering, whining, getting excited,' Wall said. Along the way, Faith became a social media celebrity, with thousands of Instagram followers, and even appeared on 'Good Morning America.' What delighted Wall the most, he said, was the bond he developed with Faith and the joy watching her change from a scared puppy abandoned in a garage to a 'happy-go-lucky' dog with a zest for life. 'This changed the world for her,' he said. This year's competition was bittersweet, he said, because it would be Faith's last. She was recently diagnosed with vestibular syndrome, which can make it hard for dogs to balance, and Wall wanted to end her surfing career while she was still happy and strong. On Saturday, Faith placed first in the large division and third overall. 'I'm sad knowing it's the end, but extremely happy with how she did,' he said as fans oohed and ahhed over Faith. 'She went out like a champ, and she got the last hurrah we were hoping for.' Iza, the French bulldog, competed in the Pacifica championship for the fourth time, said her owner, David Fasoli. Iza is an unlikely surfer, Fasoli said. He adopted the Frenchie during the COVID-19 pandemic. With little to do, he frequently took her to the beach. She loved running in and out of the waves, and later, while boating, he watched as a friend's daughter took the pup tubing. Fasoli, who works at Costco, decided to see how she'd take to surfing. He bought a surfboard and gradually taught Iza to get comfortable riding it in his pool, then returned to the beach, bringing Iza out into the surf, holding the board until a wave caught it. Soon, Iza was riding small waves into shore. 'To see this 1-year old French bulldog piece it all together, take a little wave in, run to shore, turn around and come back and want to continue to learn … it was a magical moment,' he said. 'I was super proud.' On Saturday, Iza won the medium division and competed for a shot at the top prize. For Fasoli, watching his little Frenchie compete alongside veterans such as Cacau and Faith felt particularly poignant. Here was a French bulldog, the unlikeliest of surfers, defying the odds. Fasoli has spent his life defying his own odds. As a teenager, he maimed his left hand while trying to set off fireworks. It took Fasoli years to overcome the trauma of that incident, he said, but he found inspiration from watching Iza's evolution. Recently, he decided it was his turn to try to get on the board. 'Anyone out there who thinks they can't surf, here's a nonsporting dog, and a disabled person, showing you you can do it,' he said. 'My balance is not the best, and I'm not the best surfer, and Iza is not your typical surfer dog, we're just doing our best.'

New Skims face wrap promises 'jaw support' — can Kim Kardashian's latest shapewear really change your face?
The face wrap, which has already sold out online, comes in two colors and is sold for $48. Kim Kardashian's shapewear company Skims isn't just lifting butts and boobs — it's also supporting your jaw. At least that's the idea behind the company's new product, the Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap. The wrap, which looks like a postsurgical compression garment, is described on the Skims website as their 'first-ever face innovation.' It comes in two of the brand's famous neutral colors: clay and cocoa. 'This must-have face wrap boasts our signature sculpting fabric and features collagen yarns for ultra-soft jaw support,' the site reads. 'Velcro closures at the top and nape of the neck allow for easy, everyday wear.' Currently the brand is retailing the product for $48, and both colors are already sold out online. Skims has not specifically claimed that this product can change the shape of your face. However, over on the brand's Instagram, influencer Jasmine Alisha tried on the garment for her 'morning shed' — aka her morning routine in which she removes nighttime products like lip masks and hair bonnets in order to reveal glowy skin and hair. In the video, Alisha says, 'Shout-out to Skims for giving me this snatched jawline.' She also called out how the product is 'infused with collagen,' though it's unclear exactly what this means or what Skims claims it will do. Skims states on its website that the garment is infused with 'collagen yarn' but also that it is made from 81% polyamide and 19% elastane, synthetic fibers commonly used in stretchy clothing. Yahoo reached out to Skims via email to request more information about the mask, including what collagen yarn is and whether Skims had conducted any trials on the wrap to test its effectiveness. A spokesperson replied that the company is "unable to provide comment at this time." While this may be the brand's first face wrap, Skims is not the only company selling this type of garment. Skin Gym sells a similar product, which the company claims can 'sculpt and support your jawline while you sleep' as well as 'reduce the appearance of puffiness, ease facial tension, and enhance the appearance of more defined features for a well-rested, lifted look.' Meanwhile, one silicone face wrap sold on Amazon claims to be a 'double chin reducer' and 'jawline shaper,' while a second, similar product sold on Amazon says it can be used for 'jawline tightening.' What do experts think about the face wrap? So far Skims has not offered details on the science behind the wrap, but experts who spoke to Yahoo voiced skepticism about its ability to change one's face shape the way Alisha's Instagram post suggested. New York City dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner told Yahoo that in theory compression could change one's face shape — but the garment would have to be worn over time. During the natural aging process, he explained, collagen production slows down, and the skin becomes weaker and 'starts to sag.' 'The effects of gravity do add to this, and, theoretically, using a compression garment like this from a very early age may give some modest benefit, because the skin is not experiencing those effects of gravity as much,' said Zeichner. But Dr. Stafford Broumand of 740 Park Plastic Surgery said that people hoping for major transformations of their face from this product may be disappointed. Broumand said that the face wrap is essentially a compression garment, much like the ones people use after having procedures like a facelift in order to reduce swelling and aid in the healing process. He said that people may notice a change in their facial appearance after removing the face wrap, the same way you might notice a reduction in swelling after you remove a compression from any part of your body. However, he stressed that this would be a temporary change. In order to get a true tightening effect, Broumand said, surgical options — such as a deep plane facelift, which Kardashian's mom, Kris Jenner, is rumored to have gotten herself — are what will offer the most dramatic results. Ultimately, Broumand said, clinical trials are the only way to know for sure if the product works as Skims claims it does. Zeichner said that while this product may not be the solution to a sagging face, it could help people who recently had a facial tightening procedure done in order to potentially maximize their results, noting 'there is a theoretical role for compression after those types of procedures, perhaps to provide enhanced outcomes.' However, he said, 'results will be modest.' 'This type of product coming to the market and getting such attention shows the focus that even younger people are having on aging the best that they can,' Zeichner said. 'And if you are concerned, then touch base with a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to see what's right for you. The earlier we address signs of aging the better.' Not all customers are convinced either The new Skims face wrap has also prompted skepticism from some potential customers. In the comments section of the initial Instagram post by Skims, people accused the company of playing into their customers' insecurities in order to make a profit, with one user calling it 'proof that women's insecurities are a billion-dollar industry and celebrities continue to abuse this fact to profit.' Meanwhile, another joked, 'Just dropped — new invention to make women feel insecure for no reason.' Others called out the brand for raising 'beauty standards' and charged that Skims has been 'making women feel bad about themselves since 2018.' And one asked, 'If this works so well, why didn't Kris Jenner use this instead of spending thousands of dollars on a facelift?' referring to recent statements by Jenner's reps confirming that she received a facial refresh from Dr. Steven Levine last year. Some people online, however, noted that the face wrap might have some noncosmetic purpose: 'I have a connective tissue disorder that caused TMJ and my jaw recesses at night, which causes mouth breathing + allergies so I am actually stoked for this!' one person wrote in the Instagram comments. A second added, 'This isn't new. People who suffer from burns on neck and face have worn these before in the U.K.'
