Reddit CEO Steve Huffman in letter to shareholders: We are concentrating our resources to make Reddit a go-to search engine

Reddit is all set to make a bold pivot towards becoming a full-fledged search engine. Reddit CEO
Steve Huffman
recently announced the plans to prioritise
search functionality
and AI-powered answers across the platform. The announcement came as part of the company's Q2 2025 shareholder letter, which highlighted strong financial performance driven by advertising and a growing user base. 'Reddit a go-to search engine, and expanding internationally,' said Huffman. The move comes amid explosive growth in Reddit's internal search usage, which now sees over 70 million weekly queries.
Reddit wants to be a search engine
During the earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman framed the initiative as a natural evolution for the platform, which has long been the de facto search engine for millions seeking genuine, opinion-based answers. "For years, people have been adding 'reddit' to their search queries to find real experiences, recommendations, and discussions," Huffman stated. "Our communities are the world's most valuable database of human experience. We're simply building the infrastructure to make that wisdom more accessible and searchable."
Reddit's pitch is simple: real people, real answers. In a world increasingly dominated by algorithmic summaries, Reddit believes that nuanced, lived experiences are irreplaceable. A recent survey showed that 80% of users trust human responses over AI-generated ones for complex questions.
'To focus on the areas that matter most, we are deprioritising a few initiatives, including our work on the user economy. It's still an opportunity we believe in, but we're concentrating our resources on the areas that will drive results for our most pressing needs: improving the core product, making Reddit a go-to search engine, and expanding internationally,' said Huffman.

Reddit's Q2 revenue hit $500 million, up 78% year-over-year, with a net income of $89 million and a gross margin of 90.8%. Advertising revenue alone soared to $465 million, driven by new AI-enhanced ad formats like Conversation Summary Add-ons, which boost clickthrough rates by 10%.
With Q3 revenue projected between $535 million and $545 million, Reddit is doubling down on search, deprioritizing other initiatives like its user economy to focus on core product improvements and international growth.

GoM to propose GST exemption on health and life insurance premiums: Bihar Dy CM

The Group of Ministers (GoM) on Goods and Services Tax ( GST ) will propose exempting health and life insurance premiums from the levy, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary told reporters on Wednesday. Some states, however, expressed differing views on the plan. The proposal comes amid the Centre's push for 'next-generation' GST reforms, which Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said are aimed at simplifying the tax regime, reducing compliance burden and providing relief to the common man, farmers, the middle class and MSMEs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo Addressing GoMs at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Sitharaman said the reforms rest on three pillars: structural changes, rate rationalisation and ease of living. Currently, GST is levied at four rates, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, with essentials taxed at the lowest end and luxury or sin goods in the highest slab plus cess. The Centre has proposed a two-rate system of 5% and 18%, along with a special 40% slab for select demerit goods. Live Events Over two days, the three GoMs on insurance, compensation cess and rate rationalisation are examining issues ranging from exemptions on insurance premiums to the future of compensation cess and removing duty inversion in sectors hit by uneven rates. An SBI Research report estimated that the latest rate-cut proposals could lower the effective weighted GST rate to 9.5% and lead to an annual revenue loss of about ₹85,000 crore, with an immediate shortfall of ₹45,000 crore if introduced from October 1. The GoMs' recommendations will be placed before the GST Council at its meeting next month, ahead of a planned rollout of reforms by Diwali, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India can match oil-producing nations with cheap hydrogen: Nitin Gadkari

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said India can transform from being an energy importer to a global exporter if it can cut the cost of hydrogen production to one dollar per kilogramme. Delivering the 24th Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture at The Energy and Resources Institute , the minister said that at present, hydrogen costs about USD 5-6 per kg, making it expensive compared to conventional fuels. "If we succeed in bringing it down to USD 1 per kg, India will be in a position similar to today's oil-producing countries," Gadkari said while stressing that hydrogen would play a decisive role in shaping the energy future. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo The minister said the biggest hurdle lies in setting up hydrogen filling stations and developing systems to transport the fuel. "These areas need urgent and extensive work," he said. Live Events Explaining the potential of using waste for energy , Gadkari said municipal solid waste could be a game-changer. "If we segregate waste, extract organic matter and feed it into biodigesters, it produces methane. Instead of converting methane into CNG, if we use it to produce green hydrogen , the country's municipal waste alone could generate very cheap hydrogen ," he said. He predicted that in the years ahead, disputes may even arise over waste as it will become a valuable resource. "If technology works in our favour, this transformation will happen. Hydrogen is the fuel of the future," he said. Gadkari said the key to large-scale investment lies in economic viability. "If the internal rate of return is strong, investment will never be a problem. What we need is proven technology, raw material availability and a market for the final product. Without cost-effectiveness, new technology won't be useful," he said. Gadkari said hydrogen will replace fossil fuels. "It would not only be critical for transport but also find applications in pharmaceuticals, chemicals and steel. Trains will run on it, airplanes will fly on it and dependence on fossil fuels will end," he said. Highlighting India's rise in the global automobile market, the minister said the country recently moved up from the seventh to the third position, overtaking Japan. "The American automobile industry is worth Rs 78 lakh crore, China's Rs 49 lakh crore and India's Rs 22 lakh crore. A few days ago, the global chairman of Mercedes told me they will manufacture electric Mercedes cars in India," he added. He said the future of transport and industry would be built on electric vehicles, biofuels and hydrogen. "If these are adopted on a wide scale, we will steadily move toward carbon neutrality . This will create jobs, protect the environment and accelerate development," he said. Gadkari said 17 per cent of India's land is classified as wasteland and it could be used to plant bamboo. "Bamboo can be used as a substitute for coal in power plants. It is not only cheaper than coal but also cleaner. This will provide employment to crores of people," he said. Gadkari said such green initiatives could drive India towards self-reliance. "A green revolution can make Atmanirbhar Bharat a reality. We can become a five trillion dollar economy and the third-largest in the world. This is within our reach," he said.

IIM Ahmedabad raises CAT cut-offs for PGP 2026-28, tightening shortlisting criteria

IIM Ahmedabad raises CAT cut-offs for PGP 2026-28 admissions. (Representative Image) The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) has increased the minimum CAT percentile requirements for admission to its flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP) for the 2026-28 batch. This revision significantly raises the eligibility bar for candidates seeking to secure a place in one of India's premier management institutes. According to the updated criteria, General and EWS category candidates must achieve an overall CAT percentile of 95, with a minimum of 85 percentile in each sectional paper — Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA). This marks a substantial increase from the previous overall cut-off of 80 percentile and sectional cut-off of 70 percentile. Detailed admission criteria and category-wise cut-offs The revised selection process at IIMA involves shortlisting candidates based on the CAT score, followed by the Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI) rounds. The screening through AWT and PI carries a combined weightage of 65% in the final selection, while the remaining 35% is derived from the candidate's academic record and profile-based Application Rating (AR). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Category-wise, the cut-offs vary as follows: • For General and Economically Weaker Section (EWS) candidates, the minimum CAT percentile requirement is 95 overall with at least 85 in each section. Persons with Disability (PwD) applicants under these categories have relaxed cut-offs of 85 overall and 75 sectional. • Non-Creamy Other Backward Classes (NC-OBC) candidates must score at least 90 percentile overall and 80 percentile section-wise, with PwD applicants in this category requiring 80 overall and 70 in each section. • Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates need a minimum of 85 percentile overall and 75 in each section. For PwD SC candidates, the cut-offs are further reduced to 75 overall and 65 section-wise. • Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates require a minimum of 75 percentile overall and 65 in each section. PwD ST candidates have the lowest cut-offs at 65 overall and 55 sectional percentile. It is also noted that transgender candidates in the General category will be considered under the NC-OBC category cut-offs. Composite score for final selection The final admission offers will be based on a composite score comprising multiple components. The Personal Interview (PI) accounts for 50%, the Analytical Writing Test (AWT) contributes 10%, the CAT score makes up 25%, and the Application Rating (AR) constitutes the remaining 15%. This multi-stage selection process aims to evaluate candidates on both academic merit and overall suitability for the programme. CAT 2025 registration and schedule CAT 2025 will be conducted in computer-based mode across nearly 170 cities in India. The registration process is open and will close on September 13, 2025. The examination itself is scheduled for November 30, 2025. Prof Karthik Sriram, Chairperson of Admissions (PGP & PGP-FABM), has confirmed the revised cut-offs, stating they are intended to strengthen the pool of candidates invited for interviews. Candidates aiming for admission to IIMA's PGP and PGP-FABM programmes for the 2026-28 batch are advised to meet the heightened percentile requirements to advance through the selection stages.
