Mentorship isn't just about giving advice, says Amit Jain of CarDekho

The student years at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi exposed Amit Jain to a culture of innovation and laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial journey.
'I was exposed to a rigorous academic environment that sharpened my problem-solving skills and analytical thinking. College taught me how to identify gaps in the market and develop tech-driven solutions," says Jaipur-based Jain, 49, chief executive officer and co-founder of CarDekho Group.
When Jain and his brother, Anurag, jumped into the research to buy their first car, they realised there wasn't much information online. It was only when they visited an Auto Expo in Delhi that they had access to brochures, expert insights and vehicle specifications. It made them realise the need for CarDekho, a reliable platform that would provide everything that a car buyer needed.
In an interview with Mint, Jain talks about mentorship and what he's learned from Ratan Tata. Edited excerpts:
Who do you consider your mentor?
When people say a great mentor sees potential in you before you see it in yourself, they aren't wrong. For Anurag and I, that mentor was Ratan Tata. His wisdom, humility and belief in our vision transformed the way we built CarDekho. I'll never forget the moment we reached out to him for advice on scaling up. At a time when we were navigating uncharted waters, he listened intently, shared his experience.
What does being a mentor mean to you? How do you mentor your colleagues at work?
Mentorship isn't just about giving advice—it's about unlocking potential. Whether within my organisation or outside, I actively seek individuals who have what I call 'founder-level skillsets"—a blend of hunger, ownership and creative problem-solving. This approach has helped in building entrepreneurs from the ecosystem who are now heading different verticals at CarDekho.
How has your work routine changed in the past few years?
The pandemic reshaped the way we worked, but one of the best habits I developed was connecting more deeply with my team. In the fast-paced start-up world, it's easy to get caught up in daily operations. The lockdown forced us to slow down and engage more meaningfully. I made it a point to have regular one-on-one conversations—not just about work, but about challenges, aspirations and personal growth.
How do you unwind? Do you pursue any serious hobbies?
For me, unwinding is all about spending time with family and doing things that make me happy. We often have get-togethers, which are a great way to catch up and relax.

Tesla, the US-based electric vehicle manufacturer, has opened its second showroom in India at Worldmark 2, Aerocity, Delhi. This comes right after the opening of the first showroom in BKC, Mumbai, on July 15, 2025. Covering an area of 8,200 sq ft, this will be the base of the brand to serve consumers in the national capital region. Located near the airport, embassies, and corporate offices, the showroom gives the brand more exposure to reach its target audience. Leveraging the advantage of its location, Tesla has set up four V4 Superchargers in the basement parking. The EV manufacturer also has plans to introduce Superchargers in different locations in Delhi NCR, including Saket, Noida, and Horizon Center. This follows the inauguration of the first supercharger in Mumbai a few days ago. The expansion plans also include charging network setup in eight different locations, including places like Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur. The V4 Supercharger, which consists of DC Chargers, is complemented by four Destination Charging Stalls that feature AC chargers. With these charging units available, the Supercharging stalls can achieve peak charging speeds of 250 kW, costing Rs 24/kW, while the 11 kW charging speed is priced at Rs 11/kW. Using these chargers, the newly introduced Tesla Model Y can gain as much as 267 km of range in just 15 minutes of charging. To provide some perspective, the company states that this range is sufficient for five round trips between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the Gateway of India. To utilize the charger, Tesla electric vehicle owners must connect their vehicles. Customers can check for availability using the Tesla app. This app also allows users to track the charging progress, get notifications during the charging process, and make payments for charging. The starting price for the RWD model is Rs 59.89 lakh, while the long-range version is priced at Rs 67.89 lakh. Thus, the complete on-road cost for the RWD model is Rs 61.07 lakh, while the on-road price for the long-range variant totals Rs 69.15 lakh. In India, purchasers of the rear-wheel drive variant of the Tesla Model Y can choose between a 60 kWh battery or a larger 75 kWh battery pack. This RWD model is equipped with a single electric motor that generates approximately 295 hp. Furthermore, the 60 kWh battery is reported to have a WLTP range of 500 km when fully charged, while the long-range model is said to provide a range of 622 km.

Founder of a cotton-forward brand based in Delhi, Drishti Modi said, 'We lay a lot of focus on different varieties of cotton. We're wanting to be a part of these revival movements for indigenous varieties of cotton. We use other fabrics too but primarily, what we use is cotton because we feel if India has to tell its fibre story, it is 100% cotton.' Fibre artist Sanskruti focuses on indigenous Bonpala wool from Sikkim. She designed her jacket using a no-stitch hand felting technique. It was wonderful to see artisans and fabrics from different states all in one place.
