Tom Rafferty, Cowboys OL from 1976-89, dies at 70
Rafferty played in 221 combined regular season and playoff games at guard and center from 1976-89, bridging the careers of Hall of Fame quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman.
Rafferty's daughter, Rachel Powers, confirmed his passing Thursday in Windsor, Colo., following a stroke. He had been hospitalized since early May.
A fourth-round draft pick out of Penn State in 1976, Rafferty started the Cowboys' 27-10 win against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII and their 35-31 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIII.
On Jan. 3, 1983, Rafferty's block helped spring Tony Dorsett's NFL-record 99-yard touchdown run against the Minnesota Vikings.
Rafferty worked in sports equipment sales following his retirement from the NFL.
He is survived by his wife, their son and daughter and two grandchildren.

Taking to X, one wrote: 'Horrible score bug on this bill/bears game rn'. Another said: 'Forgot this putrid scorebug is permanent'. In a similar tone, one user said: 'I regret to inform you that the horrible Fox score bug from the last Super Bowl has returned'. Another wrote: 'This Fox score bug is one of the worst ideas anyone has had. It's incredibly bad'. 'Forgot about this score bug. It genuinely makes me unhappy and angry. Back to the drawing board @FoxSports', one said. It remains to be seen whether Fox will make further adjustments before the regular season begins or if this iteration is now the network's standard moving forward.

August 18 - The Jacksonville Jaguars are acquiring veteran defensive tackle Khalen Saunders in a trade that sends offensive lineman Luke Fortner to the New Orleans Saints, according to multiple reports on Sunday night. The teams played to a 17-17 tie in a preseason game Sunday in New Orleans, with reports of the trade coming later. Saunders, who turned 29 on Aug. 9, started 27 of the 30 games he played for the Saints the past two seasons, including 10 starts in 13 games last season when he had 43 tackles, two sacks and five quarterback hits. His only career interception came in 2024 in a loss to former teammate Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs. In his six-year career, Saunders has logged 181 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 17 QB hits and one interception in 68 regular-season games (32 starts) for the Chiefs (2019-22) and Saints. He was on two Super Bowl championship teams in 2019 and 2022 with Kansas City, which selected him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Western Illinois.
