OIC Holds 47th Session of Islamic Commission for Economic, Cultural
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is holding the 47th Session of the Islamic Commission for Economic, Cultural, and Social Affairs at the OIC Headquarters in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The meeting started on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, will end on 17th April 2025.
At the Opening Session, H.E. the Secretary-General of the OIC, Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha delivered a speech noting that the success of the OIC activities for the next year will rely on the guidance and support of this meeting.
He added that since the last 50th Session of CFM held in Yaoundé, Republic of Cameroon, on 29th-30th August 2024, the OIC, has continued to accord priority attention to the execution of its resolutions in such domains as economic, science and technology, cultural, social and family affairs, youth and sports.
In the area of economic cooperation, the Secretary-General expressed his pleasure to report that the intra-OIC trade share in the overall foreign trade of Member States increased from 19.16% in 2023 to 20.36% in 2024 adding that 30 OIC Member States have now attained the target of 25% intra-OIC trade.
He stressed that the cooperation among OIC Member States efforts in the domain of agriculture and food security have received an adequate boost through the development of the Draft Strategic Plan for Food Security in the OIC Member States aimed at contributing more effectively to increasing agricultural productivity, rural development and food security in OIC countries, as well as, enhancing intra-OIC cooperation in this domain.
Hissein Taha confirmed the importance of the advancement of science and technology, higher education, health, environment, and water resources across OIC Member States.
To this end, he highlighted that the OIC General Secretariat, in collaboration with COMSTECH, is developing the OIC Artificial Intelligence Vision, which will provide a strategic framework for Member States in formulating national AI policies.

Central Bank of Egypt Eases Rules on Credit Card Use Abroad
Taarek Refaat The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has officially relaxed a key restriction on the use of credit cards abroad, signaling a shift in the country's foreign exchange management policies following recent economic reforms. In a decision announced this week, the CBE canceled a clause from a previous directive issued in October 2023. The now-removed clause had required banks to track the international use of credit cards by verifying exit and entry stamps on customers' passports within 90 days of activating their cards for international use. Under the previous rule, customers had to submit travel documentation to confirm they were physically abroad when using their cards, as a measure to control foreign currency outflows. Failure to do so could result in card restrictions or penalties. With the new directive in place, customers are no longer obligated to provide banks with such documentation. Egyptian banks will continue to allow credit card usage abroad, applying foreign exchange fees as usual, but without demanding proof of travel. Policy Shift Reflects Improved Currency Conditions This regulatory easing follows the unification of Egypt's exchange rate in March 2025, a move that aligned the official and parallel market rates and helped stabilize the country's foreign currency environment. As a result, the stringent controls previously considered necessary to prevent misuse of foreign exchange channels have become less relevant. Arab, global backlash follows Netanyahu's ‘Greater Israel' remarks amid escalating Gaza war
Arab and international condemnation intensified on Wednesday over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's remarks linking himself to what he called the 'Greater Israel vision,' as fighting in Gaza escalated and the death toll continued to rise amid warnings of a deepening humanitarian catastrophe. The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced Netanyahu's comments as a 'dangerous provocative escalation,' a threat to state sovereignty, and a violation of international law and the UN Charter. Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Sufian Qudah dismissed the remarks as 'futile illusions' that would not undermine Jordan or other Arab states, saying they reflected 'the embattled state of the Israeli government and its international isolation' amid the war on Gaza and the occupied West Bank. He urged urgent international action to stop such incitement, which he warned threatened regional security. According to The Times of Israel, Netanyahu—wanted by the International Criminal Court on war crimes charges—told an interviewer he saw himself on a 'historic and spiritual mission' encompassing territory earmarked for a future Palestinian state as well as parts of Jordan and Egypt. In Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan reiterated their 'absolute rejection' of an Israeli ministerial decision to plan for the occupation of Gaza. In a phone call, the two described the move as an attempt to 'entrench illegal occupation' and perpetuate a 'genocidal war' in violation of international humanitarian law. Abdelatty said Egypt was working with Qatar and the United States to broker a deal for detainee and prisoner exchanges, a ceasefire, and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid. On the ground, Gaza's Health Ministry reported 123 deaths and 437 injuries in the past 24 hours, bringing the toll since fighting resumed on March 18 to more than 10,200. Since the war began on October 7, 2023, over 61,700 Palestinians have been killed and 154,500 wounded. The ministry also reported eight new famine-related deaths—including three children—in the past day, bringing the total from hunger and malnutrition to 235, including 106 children. Palestinian media said seven people were killed and 20 wounded when Israeli aircraft targeted aid security personnel in northern Gaza. Meanwhile, the Associated Press cited sources claiming Israel was in talks with South Sudan to take in Palestinians from Gaza as part of a broader Israeli-U.S. displacement plan. The South Sudanese government denied the report as baseless. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon sharply criticised Netanyahu, saying he had 'lost his mind' and condemning annexation, forced displacement, and the Gaza blockade as 'utterly appalling' and 'completely unacceptable.' Abdelatty's remarks that nothing precluded the deployment of international forces in Gaza—echoed by French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal for a UN-mandated coalition—rekindled debate over postwar governance of the enclave, including a possible Palestinian Authority return and prospects for a broader political settlement. Meanwhile, a Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo for talks with Egyptian officials on the war and developments in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Al-Aqsa Mosque. Israeli Channel 12 reported that Tel Aviv was considering sending a senior delegation to Doha later this week to negotiate a comprehensive agreement covering all issues, rather than a partial deal.
