Orlando Pirates news: Kaizer Chiefs sniped, R10 million midfielder

Orlando Pirates have yet again beaten Kaizer Chiefs to a prized player. This time it's Polokwane City winger Oswin Appollis.
Both clubs tried to sign the 23-year-old in January and last offseason but were met with rejection on both occasions as Appollis continued to prove himself as one of South Africa's best.
The second half of last season saw a decline in performance, and it is perhaps because of this why Rise and Shine were willing to let their main man go.
According to reports, Orlando Pirates eyeing JS Kabylie midfielder Sadio Kanoute.
'According to Africafoot , the Soweto giants are considering tabling an offer in the region of €500,000 (approximately R10 million) to lure Kanoute, who previously turned out for Simba SC in Tanzania,' a SoccerLaduma report revealed.
In other news, there is growing concern that Orlando Pirates may see their golden boy Relebohile Mofokeng leave this winter.
'My biggest wish is to see Rele overseas in 2025/2026. I'm praying every day. I don't want to see him in the Betway Premiership again this season. I know God will answer my prayers,' Sechaba said
'[Whether it's in] Spain, England, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Switzerland — Rele can play. I believe that with all my heart. Take him to Barcelona? He can play. PSG? He can play. Any country. I'll be happy — but not Saudi Arabia,' he added.
'Not yet. He's still young. He needs to compete in UEFA competitions. If he goes to Saudi now, he won't experience that. Yes, he'd be rich — but happiness is more important. You can have all the money in the world, but if you're not happy, it's worthless.'

Kaizer Chiefs on a verge of signing FIFTH free agent

Kaizer Chiefs may sign another free agent, Luke Baartman, in the coming days. This follows the ruling by the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber, which declared the former Cape Town Spurs attacker a free agent. Baartman's availability could lead to a transfer to Amakhosi, where he would join his former teammate, Asanele Velebayi. Last week, the DRC also declared Velebayi a free agent, and shortly after, Chiefs announced his signing as the former Spurs captain. However, Cape Town Spurs are not giving up easily; they have filed a review application with the SAFA Arbitration Tribunal concerning the Velebayi case. The club is likely to take similar action regarding Baartman to prevent Kaizer Chiefs from acquiring any of their players for free. Kaizer Chiefs brought in Ethan Chislet as a free agent before bringing in the ex-Orlando Pirates duo of Thabiso Monyane and Paseko Mako on a free transfer. Etiosa Ighodaro joins Kaizer Chiefs – Can he be the striker they've been waiting for?

Another striker Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have secured the services of striker Etiosa Ighodaro from Mamelodi Sundowns. Ighodaro spent last season on loan at AmaZulu. Photo: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Image: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have completed the deal to bring Mamelodi Sundowns' Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro to Naturena. Amakhosi announced on their social media channels on Tuesday that Ighodaro joins their ranks in a bid to address their woes in front of goal that have plagued them for the last two Betway Premiership seasons. Ighodaro joins from Sundowns, but since joining the Brazilians at just 20 years old in 2021, he never kicked a ball for them in an official game. Immediately after arriving in South Africa from Abuja College, he was sent on loan to the University of Pretoria. In 2022, he moved – on loan again – to Chippa United in the Eastern Cape. In 2023, SuperSport United called on his services before AmaZulu secured him the following season. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. Video Player is loading. We would like to welcome him to the Kaizer Chiefs Family! #WelcomeIghodaro #Amakhosi4Life — Kaizer Chiefs (@KaizerChiefs) August 19, 2025 During his career in South African football, his best goal return in the league was 11 goals in 27 games for Chippa United. Last season, he found the back of the net six times for AmaZulu. In the last four years, he's scored 25 goals in all competitions. That mixed record tells the story of a striker still finding consistency, but one who has shown enough to hint at his potential. While he needs to improve on his goal input, there are some positives to Ighodaro's game, and Nasreddine Nabi will be hoping to get the most out of them. With his physical frame, Ighodaro is built like a traditional number 9, possessing the physicality to hold the ball up effectively and shield it under pressure. This allows him to occupy defenders and create opportunities – he combines this with the awareness of a modern striker. He's also been credited with intelligent off-the-ball movement and his ability to read the game. At just 24 years old, Ighodaro still has a lot of room for improvement. Whether he can become the prolific goalscorer Chiefs are desperate for remains to be seen. For Chiefs, the signing represents both a gamble and an opportunity. Ighodaro has shown flashes of promise without yet proving himself as a consistent match-winner, but Naturena could be the stage where he finally delivers on his potential. If Nabi can harness his strengths and unlock his finishing touch, Ighodaro may well become the striker to fire Amakhosi back to the summit of South African football. All Blacks lose key player for Springbok Tests

The All Blacks will be forced to make changes ahead of their second Rugby Championship clash against Argentina in Buenos Aires following confirmation that Patrick Tuipulotu and Anton Lienert-Brown have both been ruled out due to injury. Tuipulotu, who sustained a facial fracture during New Zealand's 41-24 win over the Pumas in Cordoba, will undergo surgery and is expected to be out for at least six weeks, missing upcoming fixtures against the Springboks in Auckland (6 September) and Wellington (13 September). Lienert-Brown, meanwhile, failed a head injury assessment after a head-on-head collision that also earned him a yellow card. He will return to New Zealand and could be available for selection if he clears concussion protocols in time for the Springboks tests. Coach Scott Robertson confirmed on Tuesday that both players are out of contention for Sunday's rematch against Argentina. 'They won't be available for this week, but we have cover. We'll make sure we get combinations right and give opportunities to players who need minutes,' Robertson said. Timoci Tavatavanawai and Quinn Tupaea are being considered for midfield duties, while Josh Lord, already with the squad as cover, could step into Tuipulotu's role in the second row. Samipeni Finau is another versatile option capable of playing lock or blindside flanker. Wallace Sititi and Tamaiti Williams, recovering from earlier injuries, are also expected to feature in the match-day 23. With squad depth in focus ahead of the looming Tests against South Africa, there is speculation that uncapped players like Kyle Preston (halfback) and Leroy Carter (wing) may be handed their debuts this weekend. Robertson emphasised the importance of balancing cohesion with development. 'Some guys need football, and some combinations need time together. But you also have to look ahead in the cycle and build depth.' Robertson also touched on South Africa's recent shock loss to the Wallabies in Johannesburg, noting the narrow margins that define Test rugby. 'It's a game of moments – discipline, accuracy, errors. It can swing quickly. We know how the Springboks play, and they'll go back to their DNA. It's about how we stop them, and how we impose our own style.'
