Rachel Riley: 'I'd rather swim with great white sharks than do Strictly again'
Her courage is being put to the test, however, in ITV's new series Shark! Celebrity Infested Water – an unexpected gear change in reality TV.
As it says on the tin, stars are chucked into the water with sharks of increasing size, eventually leading to the moment where they'll pluck up the bravery to come nose to nose with one of the world's most dangerous apex predators, a Tiger shark, without a cage.
Speaking to Metro ahead of tonight's first episode, I can confirm Rachel remains fully-limbed and unscathed. She insists that confronting the animal notorious for striking more fear into humans than anything else is water off a duck's back after being scrutinised by Craig Revel Horwood on national television.
'If you asked me tomorrow to go swimming with great whites, I'd be there,' she says. 'If you asked me to do Strictly again, no way.
'The thing about Strictly is that the music comes on and we panic, whereas with the sharks you can take your time to get down. Rationally, you shouldn't be more scared of something that can eat you than dancing on telly. But we're not always rational, are we?'
Tapping into the rationality of shark-wary viewers is the crux of Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters. The premise hasn't come out of nowhere, it's marking the 50th anniversary of Jaws – Stephen Spielberg's horror that's caused me to have many sudden panics in a swimming pool, let alone the sea.
The truth is, sharks are relatively harmless. If you're confident enough to get in a car, you should be able to gleefully paddle in the sea when the road is by far more likely to kill you.
Rachel is joined by a star-studded cast that includes Sir Lenny Henry, comedian Ross Noble, and Amandaland's Lucy Punch. They're mentored by leading shark experts, including Paul de Gelder – a former marine whose arm and leg were ripped off by a bull shark in 2009 but now devotes his life to protecting the species that almost killed him.
He welcomes the cast onto the boat, proudly shows off his prosthetic limbs and tells the celebs they'll be starting their journey in the water with bull sharks.
'I was expecting swimming pools with starfish to start with,' admits Rachel. 'Pasha and I've been to the Galapagos before, and we saw a bright orange thing in the water, thinking someone had dropped a life jacket, but it was actually a sea lion bitten in half trying to get out of the water.
'Its flesh was so fluorescent it looked orange, and then this bull shark came and finished it off.'
Being witness to a shark attack first-hand did nothing to deter Rachel from agreeing to take part, though – far from it. Of all the stars, the Countdown presenter is easily the most excited to be there – jealous, even, of her teammates whenever she was on land.
'I just had constant shark envy,' she says. 'Every time someone was in the water and we were waiting to go and there was a sighting of something, I was like, 'I want to be in the water!'
'There was one second where I even said it out loud, 'if Pasha could see me now, he'd be screaming at me to get out. I'm pushing my luck now.''
In the very first free swim of the process, the group paddles with eight-foot lemon sharks. Noble, among the calmest members of the pack, is actually bitten.
As I mention this, Rachel laughs: 'It was funny at the time. We thought it was just a camera bump, and then you look at the footage, and no, it really was a bite.'
'I mean, he survived,' she smiles nonchalantly. And she's right, the shark's teeth barely puncture his wetsuit. Still, though, it's a reminder that one wrong move with a bigger animal and the damage could be far more serious – even deadly.
Preparing to fly out to the Bahamas, Rachel even wrote a will.
'As soon as you have babies, you're supposed to have a will, so this was the proper impetus.
Right at the start of this process, they told us we were building up to dive with Tiger sharks, which have been found with whole suits of armour in their stomach and that there had been a fatality in that area from Tiger sharks in the last year. So even though you've got all the precautions, they're still wild sharks.'
The celebrity's levels of trepidation to be in the water with sharks varies.
On one end of the spectrum, there's Rachel, who has no reservations to dive straight in, and on the other, you have Call The Midwife's Helen George, who hasn't even put her head under water in over 20 years out of sheer fear.
Initially, it appears Helen is not cut out for free-swimming with sharks or even being near the water at all.
Without giving too much away, her unshakable terror is the heart of the series, watching a woman discover she's much more capable than she gives herself credit for. It's a surprisingly moving watch. More Trending
'What's lovely about the show is we were a team and she's the strongest person I know,' says Rachel. 'She's had the biggest achievement out of all of us so we're all really proud of her, to have the strength of character and strength of mind to not only overcome getting your face in the water, but to go out in the open ocean, take your mask off underwater, she did so much.'
Months after filming, Rachel is still clearly giddy with excitement. Only time will tell if she managed to come up and close to a Tiger shark, but the experience has definitely changed her.
'I've got the bug,' she says. I want to see orcas and manta rays next. I've always wanted to see manta rays, it's like seeing aliens when you're going underwater. I just definitely want to do more diving.'

Tess Daly, 56, shares the secret to what makes her feel like a 20-year-old
The Strictly Come Dancing host lets us into the regime which keeps her looking and feeling young Tess Daly says she has the energy of a 20-year-old... and it's partly thanks to planks. The Strictly Come Dancing host says she does the exercise every day to boost her core strength. She also described her healthy eating regime, but insists she has never dieted. Tess, 56, said: "I'm wearing the same size jeans I was wearing in my 20s, but that's not from dieting, it's from maintaining. I've never dieted, and as a mother of daughters, I've always been very careful not to demonise sugar and not count calories, I refuse to embrace any negative connotation around food because I think moderation is key." Tess is mum to Phoebe, 20, and Amber, 16, with Radio 2 DJ husband Vernon Kay, 51. Posing in her own NAIA Beach swimwear range, she says she cracked the formula to feeling and looking great. She said: "I will do planks in my living room every day because core strength is really important to me at my age now, plus I'm also very tall and do a lot of running around in heels, so I need to support my back. I'm in my 50s, and I genuinely feel I have the same energy as I did in my 20s." Finding joy in singing too, Tess said she has been doing karaoke for its health benefits - but almost suffered an embarrassing slip-up. She explained: "I just get Rihanna on, and sing and dance around the kitchen like a complete fool - it lifts the spirit like nobody's business! "The other day, my teenage daughter, Amber, said to me, 'Mum, you've not gone public with that, have you?', and I hadn't even realised you could join other people on the app to sing and you can also make it public. That would've been a nightmare because trust me, I want to be Aretha Franklin in my dreams, but I'm a very long way from that!" Tess was recently made an MBE for services to broadcasting. She said she's still "pinching herself" about the honour. She told Top Sante magazine: "Being a part of people's Saturday nights on Strictly for the past 20 years is something you never take for granted." Tess previously told how it almost went horribly wrong when she came close to missing the huge news. The presenter has been dedicating much of her time to her swimwear brand, as she adds entrepreneur to her lengthy list of credentials. "I'm working until 11pm every night on my swimwear brand NAIA Beach," she said. "I absolutely love being the co-founder – along with my best friend Gayle who has 20 years' experience in swimwear and the fashion retail industry – because I've always had an entrepreneurial streak and a constant interest in fashion throughout my television career. "We started building our brand four years ago when I couldn't find swimwear that made me feel confident and ticked all the boxes of being flattering and glamorous but also durable and practical. We started small, but it's taken on a life of its own and I really enjoy the creativity of designing for a brand that I'm passionate about."

The Summer I Turned Pretty fans 'work out' S3 ending after spotting Easter Egg
The Summer I Turned Pretty fans are already convinced they have worked out the show's endgame after spotting a major clue. WARNING: This article contains spoilers for The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3. The Summer I Turned Pretty fans are convinced they've uncovered a hidden clue hinting at Belly's endgame. Drawing from Jenny Han's cherished book series, the teen drama has launched into its third and concluding series. This chapter centres on protagonist Belly Conklin's (Lola Tung) choice between remaining with current partner Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno) or pursuing lingering emotions for his sibling Conrad (Christopher Briney). The opening two episodes are currently available on Prime Video, with subsequent instalments scheduled for Wednesday releases. Following the debut episodes, audiences have highlighted striking similarities between the teenage series and beloved comedy Friends, sparking speculation about potential character developments. During the opening episode, Belly uncovers Jeremiah cheated on her during Spring Break, whilst their relationship was experiencing difficulties. Upon this revelation, she confronts her partner demanding answers, reports the Mirror US. "I didn't mean for this to happen, it was a mistake," Jeremiah protested. Belly then retorted: "A mistake? "Like what you tripped and you fell on top of her naked?" Jeremiah explained: "It happened when we were on a break. When we were broken up." Viewers have noticed that the dramatic scene bears a striking resemblance to the infamous break up between Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) and Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) in the beloved sitcom. During their relationship hiatus, Ross ends up sleeping with someone else, leaving Rachel absolutely furious when she discovers the truth. When challenged about his actions, Ross protested: "It was a mistake, I made a mistake!" Rachel's incredulous response was: "A mistake?" "What were you trying to put it in, her purse?" Ross eventually justifies his behaviour by declaring: "I though we were broken up." Jeremiah's desperate apology to Belly eerily echoes Ross's emotional plea to Rachel. Both characters are shown on their knees before their partners, desperately seeking forgiveness. Fans were swift to spot the parallels, with one TikTok user commenting: "As soon as he said 'we were on a break' I was like what is this Friends?" Another quipped: "Welcome back Ross Geller," while a third observed: "The fact that Belly's and Rachel's lines are almost identical." Some viewers have theorised that this seemingly deliberate nod could be foreshadowing Belly and Jeremiah ending up together at the end of season three, mirroring how Ross and Rachel ultimately reconcile in Friends. One fan noted: "Only difference [is] Rachel walked away and Belly is getting married," prompting another to point out: "I mean Rachel still ended up with Ross and his baby..." Other social media users concurred, speculating that Belly and Jeremiah might reconcile and possibly start a family. After the second episode, which depicts Jeremiah proposing to Belly, this theory could hold some weight. However, viewers will have to patiently wait for the upcoming episodes to see where this dramatic love triangle is headed.
