Subaru Launches Its Uncharted EV With a 290-Mile Range, Should Hyundai and Kia Worry?
This horsepower stems from dual electric motors on the front and rear axles, and standard all-wheel drive (AWD) on two of the three variants. The Uncharted's complete trim lineup includes Premium FWD, Sport, and GT levels. Drivers receive over 300 miles of range on the front-wheel drive (FWD) trim, but lower horsepower at 221. Fast-charging each grade's 74.7-kWh, high-capacity lithium-ion battery from 0% to 80% takes about thirty minutes, and selectable drive modes include Snow, Mud, and Dirt. Off-roading is enhanced by the model's lightweight and rigid high-strength steel, structural support from its underfloor batteries, aerodynamic enhancements, and specifically tuned suspension components.
While this compact model is almost seven inches shorter than Subaru's new Solterra electric SUV, it features 1.2 cubic feet of additional storage behind the second row for a total of 25 cubic feet. There's seating for up to five passengers, and design touches, such as orange accents and soft-touch materials, characterize the cabin. Subaru StarTex interior upholstery is available on the Uncharted GT and Sport, and the GT trim also receives standard heated outboard rear seats.
On the technology front, drivers receive a 14-inch touchscreen, dual wireless smartphone chargers, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Dual USB-C chargers are present in the rear, and a battery preconditioning system helps achieve the 30-minute charge time from 0% to 80%, even under challenging conditions such as cold weather. The digital gauge cluster is positioned above the dashboard, which contains a sleek LED ambient lighting strip. A panoramic glass roof paired with two-tone coloring helps form the Uncharted's contemporary appearance, and trims like the GT feature ventilated front seats and 20-inch wheels. The other wheel option measures 18 inches, and AWD models contain low-profile roof rails.
The Subaru Uncharted beats both the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV in both power and range. The 2026 Hyundai Kona Electric boasts between 133 and 215 horsepower, while the Kia Niro EV offers 201 horsepower. The Kona Electric can take drivers between 200 and 260 miles on a single charge, versus the Niro EV's 253-mile range. The Uncharted is also more off-road focused than its Hyundai and Kia counterparts, and features more cargo space behind its second row than the Niro, while falling short of the Kona Electric by just 0.5 cubic feet.
The 2026 Subaru Uncharted will give the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV a run for their money with its sharp exterior styling, impressive range, off-road capability, and interior that doesn't cut corners on tech. During the global in-person reveal of the Uncharted in New York, I noticed several standout elements that distinguished this Subaru from its competition, including rear door handles on the C-pillar, a striking headlight signature, and an interior that felt clean and straightforward, yet not dull. The 2026 Subaru Uncharted is expected to go on sale in early 2026, with pricing to be announced closer to its release.

No grants available yet on EVs – but Hyundai adds to discounts along with MG, Alfa Romeo and Leapmotor
Two weeks after the government's surprise EV grant went live, there are still no cars listed on the official government website as being available with grant money applied to the list price. However, car makers are jumping in with their own 'EV grants' to avoid a stall in EV sales while car buyers wait to find out which cars are eligible for the government grants. The Electric Car Grant was announced on Monday July 14 and went live on Wednesday July 16. Car makers must apply for the grants, which are available on EVs up to the price of £37,000 and where car makers have signed up to low-carbon Science-Based Targets around manufacturing. Grants of between £1,500 and £3,750 will be available for eligible cars. While the announcement of the EV grant has been broadly welcomed by car makers, it took many of them by surprise, with some learning about the government plan via the media. One car company executive, speaking anonymously to The Independent, also confirmed that dealers were reporting customers cancelling orders until it was clear which cars were, and which weren't, eligible for grants. Hyundai is the latest car maker to offer its own electric grant, with the biggest discount available on Hyundai's smallest model. The Hyundai Inster – recently voted World Electric Car of the Year – gets a £3,750 'grant' bringing the entry-level car's price down to £19,755. There's still an additional £500 off if you go for Hyundai's low-rate PCP finance, too. The rest of the Hyundai electric car range, including models over £37,000, are also getting a £1,500 discount as part of the offer. Buyers of Chinese-made EVs were also left to reconsider their purchases with news that the government wasn't expecting those models to be eligible for the Electric Car Grant. Speaking on Radio Four, Minister for the Future of Roads, Lilian Greenwood, said, 'We don't expect any cars that are assembled in China to be eligible for this scheme. 'The grant is restricted to those manufacturers that reach minimum environmental standards. And, frankly, if you generate a lot of the electricity that powers your factory through coal power stations, then you are not going to be able to access this grant." The Department for Transport told The Independent: 'We expect dozens of models will be eligible but manufacturers will need to apply for the grant before we can confirm eligibility. We have held multiple calls with vehicle manufacturers to explain vehicle eligibility and how to apply for the grant. These discussions will continue to ensure manufacturers have all the information they need. 'All eligible models will be published on once the application has been approved. Applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis and as quickly as possible.' Chinese car brands have been quick to react by introducing their own 'EV grants' to stimulate demand among private buyers. Leapmotor was first out of the blocks with its Leap Grant, offering £1,500 off the Leapmotor T03, making it Britain's cheapest car at £14,495, while the Leapmotor C10 family SUV gets a £3,750 discount, taking the price down to £32,750. MG followed with its own EV grant, offering a discount of £1,500 off the MG4 and MGS5 EVs on top of existing offers, while another Chinese brand, GWM, has taken the full £3,750 off its GWM ORA 03 models with its Green Grant, bringing the starting price down to £21,245. It's not just Chinese brands applying discounts, though. Alfa Romeo is offering £1,500 off its Alfa Junior Elettrica range, on top of existing zero per cent finance offers and the promise of a free EV home charger with standard installation. We'll update this story regularly as more news on cars eligible for the EV grant breaks, or we hear of more discounts from car makers on their electric cars.

Kia reports record revenues in Q2
Kia Corporation reported a 6.5% rise in revenues year-on-year to a record KRW 29.35 trillion in the second quarter of 2025, driven by strong global demand for its hybrid models, higher average selling prices (ASP) and favourable exchange rates. The South Korean automaker saw its operating profit plunge by over 24% to KRW 2.77 trillion, however, reflecting higher sales incentives and a much tougher international trade environment, following the recent US import tariff hikes. The company's operating margin was still a highly respectable 9.4%. Net profits, including non-controlling interests, fell by 23.3% to KRW 2.27 trillion. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The Insurance Savings You Expect Kia's global vehicle sales increased by 2.5% to 814,888 units in the second quarter of 2025, driven by a 14% rise in sales of electrified models to 185,000 units. Domestic sales were lifted by the recent launch of the EV4 battery-powered sedan and the Tasman pickup truck, while US sales were helped by strong demand for the Carnival Hybrid MPV and K4 sedan and sales in India were supported by the recent launch of the Syros compact SUV. Kia also reported strong growth in markets in the Middle East and Africa, while sales in Europe declined, in line with weak overall market demand and slowing Sportage uptake ahead of the launch of the Sportage PE, which is scheduled to be unveiled in the third quarter. Outlook Kia said it will continue to adopt flexible strategies to deal with the ongoing global market uncertainties, including maintaining appropriate inventory levels and demand-based production, implementing incentive strategies centered on profitability and customer value. In South Korea, the automaker will continue to focus on expanding sales of hybrid models, including hybrid versions of Sportage, Sorento and Carnival models, as well as expanding its BEV range with the launch of the EV5 and PV5 models. In the US the company will continue to focus on enhancing profitability by increasing the supply of hybrid versions of the Sportage, Sorento and Carnival models, while in Europe it plans to launch the EV4 in the third quarter. In India the company will soon introduce its first full-electric, made-in-India Carens Clavis EV, while also strengthening its dealer network. Kia said it remains committed to completing its full EV lineup by 2026, including rolling out its new EV4, EV5, and EV2 models globally. The company will continue to expand its global presence by offering more hybrid models and entering new segments, including hybrid versions of the Telluride and Seltos SUVs, which will line up alongside a growing range of PBVs and pickup trucks.
