Matthew Goode insists Downton Abbey remark 'was not meant to be derogatory'
However, he has insisted that the comments he made were not intended 'in a horribly derogatory way'.
The actor – who is currently starring in the new Netflix thriller Dept Q, out today – clarified his remarks in an exclusive interview with Metro.
Goode recently confirmed he will not be returning for the third film of Julian Fellowes' Downton Abbey, having starred in the melodrama for two seasons.
Speaking to Radio Times, he quipped that his character, racing driver Henry Talbot and Lady Mary's second husband, had become a 'wet lettuce', so it is probably for the best if he disappeared into the sunset.

Addressing the wisecrack at Henry's expense, Goode told Metro: 'I didn't mean it in a horribly derogatory way. I just meant actually, wouldn't it be more exciting if [Lady Mary] didn't need a man so she might end up on her own?
'Some people look up to her as a modern feminist or a pillar of modern feminism.'
While Goode never read the script for the third film, since he was working on the TV show The Offer, he suggested his own alternative ending for Lady Mary.
'I would hope that, if she does have a happy ending, maybe one of her earlier suitors could come back and whisk her off,' said the 47-year-old.
He then suggested perhaps Lady Mary's ending could involve 'something surprising other than good old Henry'.
So what does he think Henry is doing now? Replying without a beat: 'Drinking, probably.'

While Goode is most familiar to his fans as a bastion of the period drama, with Downton, The Crown and Brideshead Revisited likely his most well-known roles, his latest IMDb entry is something wholly different.
Goode stars as detective Carl Morck in Netflix's new cold case psychological thriller Dept Q, in which he has grown a grey-speckled beard and installed a chip on his shoulder to inhabit the frame of a tortured detective forever on the case.
Based on the Danish crime novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, Dept Q follows Goode's Mock as he joins forces with other down-and-out coppers in the Edinburgh precinct to try and crack long-unsolved cold cases.
It turned out playing against type was something The Imitation Game star quite enjoyed, albeit admitting it did start to creep into his off-screen life during the 'seven-month grind' of filming the show in Scotland.
His schedule included 4am wake-ups to run dialogue and prep for the day's scenes and weekends that were spent catching the Caledonian sleeper to visit his wife and children in Exeter, emerging bleary eyed at Euston Station at 5am.
'After seven months it does compound upon you slightly, playing someone with PTSD and working on the murder squad,' he said. 'But very nice problems to have.'
He added: 'You get into a rhythm. The thing about doing long form television is that there isn't really any switching off, because it's a constant process.'
When he wasn't running lines in the bath or filming the nine-episode show's high-octane scenes, he enjoyed moments to himself with a pot of coffee and a sports documentary – Ken Burn's Baseball being his favourite. More Trending
Goode said all his roles have been challenging in certain ways, but did single out inhabiting the grizzled psyche of Morck as particularly demanding.
'The darkness of it was relentless. It's up there,' he said, momentarily wracking his brain. 'Once you finish, I just jettison everything from my memory banks. I control, alt, delete a lot.'
He then added: 'But we're not saving lives. We're not in a war zone operating on children. It was tough, but let's keep it within the realms. It was a wonderful challenge.'

Dept Q is available to stream on Netflix from today.

The constant stream of gripping TV shows feels endless in this day and age. But for many of us gameshow nuts, there's one series that is guaranteed to be a highlight of our 2025 to-watch list, months before it comes out – Celebrity Traitors. 'Maybe I have got a dark side,' comedian Alan teases cryptically – in a statement that prompted chuckles from the Edinburgh TV Festival audience – as Calendar Girls' Cylia Imrie pledges: 'I'm here to win.' While fans of the civilian version of The Traitors might assume that they know how the game is going to play out, the creators of the series seem to be intent on pulling out unforeseen twists that'll blow us all away. 'They think they know what they've signed up for… but they have no idea,' host Claudia vows. Celebrities who are usually perceived by the public as being warm and friendly might turn out to be anything but, as Olympian Tom Daley admits that he's prepared to 'fight to the death'. He might be retired from professional sport, but he's certainly not lacking any of his competitive spirit. Here's all you need to know about the highly anticipated BBC series. The inaugural series of Celebrity Traitors will debut in October this year, with an exact date yet to be confirmed. The line-up for the first season includes: Comedian Alan Carr Singer Cat Burns Actress Celia Imrie Singer Charlotte Church TV presenter Clare Balding Historian David Olusoga Former England rugby player Joe Marler Comedian Joe Wilkinson TV presenter Jonathan Ross TV presenter Kate Garraway Comedian Lucy Beaumont Actor Mark Bonnar Comedian Nick Mohammed Social media personality Niko Omilana Singer Paloma Faith Actress Ruth Codd Actor and TV presenter Stephen Fry EastEnders star Tameka Empson Former Olympic diver Tom Daley Who else could host Celebrity Traitors than the incomparable, legendary, fingerless glove and fabulous knit-wearing Claudia Winkleman? No one, that's who. Claud is back, and we can't wait to revel in all of her fabulousness once again. The teaser reveals short glimpses of other parts of the series, including the celebrities sitting around the roundtable ready for a heated debate, and people locked up with chains and handcuffs. Of course, we still don't know at this point who Claudia is going to select as her Faithfuls – whose mission is to suss out the liars in their midst – and the Traitors – who will be murdering unsuspecting victims under the cover of darkness each night. From what we've seen so far, it appears that everyone in the cast is hiding a lot more darkness under their sleeves than we might have suspected… and we're already on the edge of our seats. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival BBC panel, Syeda Irtizaali, the director of unscripted content at the broadcaster, shed further light on the excitement that's to come in just a couple of months when Celebrity Traitors finally debuts. We wanted to have a really broad range of people, obviously, but we also wanted people that were all fans of the show, that understood it,' she told TV critic and moderator Scott Bryan. 'I was worried about it. I was worried about how they were going to play compared to members of the public, but we have nothing to worry about. 'They really play the game. Some of the things that you'll see them do is extraordinary. It's well worth the wait.' View More » Celebrity Traitors premieres this October on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Got a story? But how did the show end - and will it have a second season? Spoilers for Hostage on Netflix up-to-and-including episode five. A thrilling new British drama has debuted on Netflix this week and it includes TV royalty Suranne Jones. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hostage, which feels a bit like a spiritual successor to BBC's Bodyguard, premiered on the streaming service today (August 21). It follows a British Prime Minister who faces a moment of peril after her husband is taken hostage. All five episodes are available to watch now, just in time for the bank holiday weekend. It is a very easy watch and runs for less than five hours combined. But will the show return for more episodes in the future? Here's all you need to know: Will there be a second series of Hostage? Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Suranne Jones in Netflix's Hostage | Netflix Netflix is billing the show as a limited series, which does seem to suggest it might be a one-and-done series. However, it is not unheard of for a miniseries to be turned into a returning programme, if successful enough. Disney Plus renewed Shogun for multiple future seasons, following its blockbuster success last year. So, if Hostage does top the charts, Netflix might be quickly asking for more. The show certainly leaves a little bit hanging at the end of episode five, the series finale. What happened at the end of Hostage? Netflix ending explained Full spoilers follow from this point. Don't read any further if you haven't finished Hostage. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The episode starts with a state of emergency being declared and the army taking control of the streets. It is confirmed that Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy) had been killed in the bombing in the episode before. General Livingstone is the man behind the plot, which involved necessitating a military coup of sorts to prompt an increase in defence funding. The people responsible for the kidnapping as well as the bombing of 10 Downing Street are revealed to be soldiers who were 'abandoned' when Abigail Dalton, then a junior minister, gave the order to leave Belize before the evacuation was complete. In the show, Belize had been invaded by Guatemala in a rather undefined conflict. The previous episode it was revealed that Saskia was secretly part of the plot, posing as Matheo's girlfriend, and was one of the troops from the disbanded along with John Shagan (Martin McCann). After a confidence motion had been passed against Dalton the previous episode, following her reveal of General Livingston's plot, she is informed that it has been void and she remains Prime Minister. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad However, that was not the end of it and following the failure to kill Dalton in the Downing Street bombing John and Saskia track her family to a country house. After taking down the security guards, they hold Max and Sylvie hostage (once again). Matheo cleverly uses his phone to make a silent 999 call and alerts the authorities to the situation. After a scuffle with Saskia, Sylvie manages to escape and Dalton arrives at the house. John reveals that his fiancée had been a translator who was left behind during the evacuation of Belize and was shot shortly afterwards. She had been carrying his child at the time. As the armed police arrive, John accuses Dalton of breaking her word and Max attempts to disarm him but ends up badly injured by the knife. Sylvie, armed with Saskia's gun, breaks up the fight and John tries to convince her to shoot him, including revealing he ordered the killing of her granddad. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Syvie shoots John and then is arrested by the armed police. The antagonist appears to die, having been shot in the chest. The series ends with PM Dalton giving a speech outside 10 Downing Street to the nation. She calls a General Election, using the words of Vivienne, and aims to seek a 'radical new mandate'. A portrait of Vivienne can be seen hung-up inside Downing Street before she goes to give her speech. It certainly leaves a few things hanging, despite being billed as a 'limited series'.

Love Is Blind UK couple's 'epic' love story not shown on TV and how it nearly fell apart
Some of the relationship journeys are never shown A Love Is Blind UK couple have shared their "epic" love story that was not shown on TV, and how it very nearly all fell apart. Love Is Blind UK has returned for a second season, with five newly engaged couples navigating their lives together after an extensive dating period on their pods. The latest batch of episodes (August 20) have seen the couples move on to the next phase of their journey. But of course, not every love story has been shown on screens. Stars Amy and James found their way to one another, despite not being seen on screens. Primary school teacher Amy, from Wales had been single for two years after her last relationship broke down when she suggested they started a family. Despite living in Dubai for the last few years, now back on home soil, she was ready to find her life partner. Similarly, real estate manager James had been married before and has two daughters. The 33-year-old used to divide his time between the UK and Thailand where his mum is from. According to Netflix's Tudum, Amy initially said yes to another proposal but a twist of fate soon found her back to James. She said: "I'm a big believer in the universe, everything unfolds exactly how it's meant to unfold." It has been revealed that during their dating period, Amy and James had actually found a lot in common, including the fact she recently returned from a trip to Thailand, where James had been living. However, despite getting on in the pods, they were also forming other relationships. Amy admitted: "That day we missed was key because by day three, I had a strong bond with somebody else." Amy had started to build a connection with Ross M, whilst James was dating both Holly and Laurie. However, James admitted they were both "playing it safe" as he told Tudum: "In hindsight, I should've laid it on a bit thicker with Amy, but I didn't want to propose and then have her say no." When it came to making a decision, Amy was left "crying", unable to decide, until she said yes when Ross M had proposed. However, it was James who could not bring himself to propose to another woman. After their first night out together, Amy and Ross soon called their relationship off, but a few days later she found herself chatting to James on Instagram. At the time, she was in Spain, and so James drove six hours to the airport to pick her up upon her UK return. He added: "It was pretty epic." They made their relationship official around two weeks later before James declared his love, and they have gone from strength to strength since, even meeting James' children. The two have now spent the last three months living together in Malta. Amy added: "Love Is Blind sets a foundation where you have to be vulnerable and emotional because there's nothing else you can offer. "Communication has been a strong point in our relationship, and I think that has genuinely come from starting in the pods."
