Browns' starter carted off with scary injury at training camp
One minute, the Browns were taking part in a 7-on-7 drill. The next, one of Cleveland's starters was on the ground in pain, surrounded by his teammates, with a cart coming out to take him off the field.
It was cornerback Martin Emerson on the ground with what Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot deemed a "very painful left leg injury" that "he knew right away it was bad."
The Athletic's Zac Jackson added: "The whole area has gone silent."
Emerson was projected to be one of the Browns' starting cornerbacks out wide this season, opposite Denzel Ward.
Options behind Emerson include nickel corner Greg Newsome along with the likes of Cameron Mitchell and Tony Brown II.
Emerson was a third-round pick by the Browns in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State.
MORE: Josh Allen continues to prove he's a hero for Bills fans
He only started six of the 17 games he played in as a rookie, although Emerson did put up 63 tackles that season.
In 2023, he started 12 of the 16 games he was healthy for. Emerson recorded all four of his career interceptions in that campaign, and he also had 59 tackles.
In 2024, Emerson started in 15 of the Browns' 17 games. He made a career-high 80 tackles.
Opposite Ward, Emerson always has been called into action frequently. That'll likely be even more true for whatever down-the-depth-chart option steps in for Emerson for however long he may be out.
The Browns had one tough-looking injury earlier in training camp to receiver Cedric Tillman, but that turned out not to be serious at all.
It's tough to believe Cleveland will dodge the huge-injury bug twice in a week.

Ex-Raiders HC Antonio Pierce joins Chiefs training camp ahead of KC's first preseason game
On Wednesday, former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce was spotted at the Kansas City Chiefs' latest training camp practice session. The exact reason for Pierce's visit is unknown, but as a former Super Bowl champion, he possesses a wealth of knowledge that could prove to be valuable for Kansas City's players in 2025. With the Chiefs' first preseason exhibition against the Arizona Cardinals set to take place on August 9, Kansas City's coaching staff is sure to be finalizing its game plan while Pierce observes their progress. Take a look at this video of Pierce chatting with Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo while heading to the practice field, which was posted to Twitter by veteran sports anchor Harold Kuntz of FOX4 KC: While it isn't uncommon for free agent coaches to visit Kansas City's training camps, Pierce's presence was surprising for some fans who were in attendance for workouts at Missouri Western State University this week. Last year, ex-Raiders skipper and current Barstool personality Jon Gruden was spotted at several practices. Roger Goodell hints at College Football RedZone amid ESPN deal
Roger Goodell is looking into having a RedZone channel for college football after ESPN acquired the NFL Network. While appearing on ESPN's SportsCenter, the NFL commissioner hinted at the potential launch of College Football RedZone. 'It'll continue to be produced right here in this building,' Roger Goodell said from NFL Network's broadcast studio in L.A. when asked about the future of NFL RedZone . 'It will be the NFL RedZone. I don't think fans will see any difference to that. 'Obviously, in the context of that, though, ESPN purchased the RedZone name, and they will be able to utilize that for other sports, college football and other things, and I think that could be an exciting thing for our fans also to see a RedZone, maybe in college football or other sports. That's something that they now own and have the ability to do that. But as far as Red Zone, NFL Red Zone, there won't be any changes for our plans.' Having a college football RedZone would a big win for college football fans, as it would be a great way to keep up with multiple college football games with one channel. And with there being more college football teams than what the NFL has, a college football RedZone could last from 12 p.m. ET to 12 a.m. ET with multiple hosts. On Tuesday evening, the NFL and ESPN announced that the four-letter network acquired the NFL Network and other media assets owned and controlled by the NFL – including NFL RedZone and NFL Fantasy – in exchange for 10 percent equity state in ESPN. As Goodell mentioned, the NFL will continue to own, operate and produce NFL RedZone. 'Since its launch in 2003, NFL Network has provided millions of fans unprecedented access to the sport they love,' Goodell said in a statement. 'Whether it was debuting Thursday Night Football, televising the Combine, or telling incredible football stories through original shows and breaking news, NFL Network has delivered. The Network's sale to ESPN will build on this remarkable legacy, providing more NFL football for more fans in new and innovative ways.'
