Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 30: a history of the number and who wore it best
Current Steelers No. 30 wearer: RB Jaylen Warren:
Warren is the only Steeler wearing No. 30 on the roster. All eyes are on the fourth-year Steelers running back to deliver in 2025 — his first season with Pittsburgh as the lead back after ex-Steeler Najee Harris signed with the Chargers this offseason.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 30:
Best No. 30 in Steelers history: CB Chad Scott
Chad Scott is the best Steeler to ever wear No. 30. Selected with the 24th overall pick in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft, Scott spent eight seasons with the Steel City — snagging 21 interceptions, four of which were pick-sixes, tied for the second-most in franchise history. A steady presence in the secondary during the late 1990s and early 2000s, Scott would finish out the final two seasons of his nine-year career as a Patriot — but remains the greatest to wear No. 30 in Pittsburgh.

Where does CBS Sports rank UNC ahead of 2025 college football season?
Can UNC surpass these preseason football rankings? At this time next month, we'll be a full two weeks into college football season. Also at this time next month, UNC fans are hoping for a 2-0 start to Bill Belichick's first year coaching college football. North Carolina will kick off its highly-anticipated 2025 campaign on Monday, September 1 at 8 p.m. ET against the TCU Horned Frogs. The Tar Heels still have a few weeks to decide their starters, most notably at quarterback, but also don't be surprised to see Belichick tap deep into positional depth. Excitement is at an all-time high in Chapel Hill, but we won't know how good UNC is until it plays an actual opponent. In CBS Sports' Preseason Rankings of all 136 FBS teams, North Carolina lands at 54th. The Tar Heels are just one spot ahead of in-state rival NC State, winners of this annual series' past four matchups. UNC is one slot behind Houston, which hasn't enjoyed a winning season since 2022. North Carolina has plenty of talent scattered across its roster, but plenty of talent that played elsewhere in 2024. At Training Camp last Saturday, Belichick revealed there are 70 new Tar Heels on this year's roster. UNC has a fairly tough early portion of its schedule, also traveling to UCF and hosting Clemson. North Carolina will play five straight beatable opponents in California, Virginia, Syracuse, Stanford and Wake Forest, before being tested again with Duke and the Wolfpack. No one expects the Tar Heels to be a National Championship contender this fall, but that's obviously the hope. Fans simply just want to see marked improvement from the Mack Brown era, which ended with another loss to the team in red. Aaron Rodgers and other Steelers vets to sit in preseason opener vs. Jaguars
New Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will not be taking his first snap in a black and gold uniform this weekend. The former league MVP will sit in Friday's preseason opener against the Jaguars in Jacksonville, head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Thursday, along with several Steelers starters, including wide receiver DK Metcalf, cornerback Jalen Ramsey, linebacker T.J. Watt and defensive lineman Cam Heyward. 'I've identified some guys that won't be playing in this game this week,' Tomlin said, according to Mark Kaboly of 'The Pat McAfee Show.' 'It has nothing to do with injury. They need less runway to take off, to be quite honest with you, because of their experience and where they are in their careers. Oftentimes, I preserve them through this process while providing more opportunities for those that need more preparation and more opportunity to display their talents.' There are a few iconic franchises in the NFL. I played for one of them for 18 years. This is another one of those.' Advertisement Rodgers, who began his career in Green Bay in 2005, had put football on the back burner during free agency as he tended to matters in his personal life. Barry Reeger-Imagn Images 'I had great conversations with Mike and [general manager] Omar [Khan] throughout the process,' said Rodgers, who previously suggested this season could be his last. Advertisement When Rodgers does make his Steelers debut, he'll be doing so as a newlywed after revealing in June he's been married 'a couple of months.' He confirmed his relationship with a woman named Brittani last December. Rodgers appeared in all 17 regular-season games with the Jets last year, when he threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He missed most of the 2023 season after rupturing his Achilles in Week 1. The Steelers will host the Buccaneers in their second preseason game next week and will visit the Panthers in the preseason finale on Aug. 21. The Jets host Pittsburgh in the Week 1 opener on Sept. 7.

Former Iowa football star tabbed pivotal rookie for 2025 NFL season
Iowa football has put a ton of talent into the NFL in recent years. Plenty of these players have played big roles in their team's success early in their careers. Most of the time, these players have been located in the trenches or at the tight end positions, as the Hawkeyes have had a lot of success putting players into the NFL at those positions. But recently, some players at other spots have been game changers as well. Just look at Cooper DeJean in Philadelphia last season. He jumped onto the scene as a rookie, making huge plays left and right, especially in their playoff run. He was a big reason why the Eagles won the Super Bowl, and he was definitely a pivotal rookie last season. And another former Hawkeye could be in a similar position to play a huge role as a rookie. released an article naming one pivotal rookie for every NFL team in 2025, and one former Hawkeye football star made the list. Which former Hawkeye made list? listed Kaleb Johnson as the most pivotal rookie for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025. The Steelers selected the former Hawkeye star running back in the third round of the NFL Draft after former first-round pick Najee Harris left in free agency. Johnson was slated as the third-string running back on the Steelers' latest depth chart behind Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell, but is projecting a big year for him. Despite a downturn late last season, the expectation is the Steelers' defense will be good, if not great, in 2025. There is less to be convinced about on offense, which is why I'm going with Johnson over first-round pick Derrick Harmon here, even though I'm bullish on Harmon's prospects of becoming a staple on the interior of the defensive line. Aaron Rodgers is going to have a hard time maximizing his potential at 41 years old without the threat of a strong running game. Jaylen Warren has yet to prove he's capable of long-term bell-cow duty, leaving the door open for Johnson to claim the spot. Pittsburgh drafted him to be the quintessential one-cut runner who fights for the extra yards even though there's not much razzle-dazzle to his game. - Last season at Iowa, Johnson rushed for 1,537 yards and a school record 21 touchdowns en route to being named an All-American. He was an absolute stud and a big reason why Iowa's offense took a massive step forward in the first year under Tim Lester. Now Johnson will get the chance to show what he can do at the professional level. And Hawkeye fans won't have to wait long to see him make his debut. Johnson is slated to play in the Steelers' first preseason game this Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
