Omarion Hampton meets with historic NFL team, former UNC football player at NFL Combine Will a UNC football connection land Omarion Hampton in the Windy City?
Hundreds of pro football hopefuls are currently at the NFL Combine, showcasing their skills in front of numerous executives and coaches, hoping to get a shot at living out their childhood dreams.
One of those NFL hopefuls hits a little closer to home: running back Omarion Hampton, arguably the best recent back in UNC football history.
Hampton started 2023 on the depth chart behind British Brooks, then overtook him after his first career 200-yard performance, which came against App State. Hampton ended 2023 with 1,504 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, then followed that breakout campaign with a 1,660-yard, 15 touchdown campaign in 2024.
We don't know which team will be lucky enough yet to choose Hampton in April's NFL Draft, but we do know at least one team that Hampton met with.
On Friday, February 28, Windy City Gridiron's Khari D. Thompson reported that Hampton met with the Chicago Bears, who have a brand-new head coach in former Tar Heel walk-on Ben Johnson.
Chicago currently has former Georgia Bulldog D'Andre Swift leading its backfield, but the depth behind Swift thins in extensive experience with Roschon Johnson, Travis Homer and Darrynton Evans.
Hampton is the type of running back NFL teams should covet, as Hampton exudes a calm confidence, can shake off multiple tacklers with his low center of gravity, plus can leave opposing defenses in the dust with his top-rank speed.
Running backs are very disposable in the NFL – unless they produce consistently from day one. Hampton hasn't taken an professional snap yet, but with how much he produced at North Carolina over the past two seasons, I can see a long NFL for the kid from Clayton.

Video emerges of Oregon 5-star TE Kendre Harrison shattering backboard with dunk
Video emerges of Oregon 5-star TE Kendre Harrison shattering backboard with dunk The Oregon Ducks have a lot of highly-rated recruits coming in the 2026 class, but after a video circulated online over the weekend, it's become clear that they may have the most tantalizing two-sports athlete coming as well. 5-star tight end Kendre Harrison, who is also a highly-rated basketball player, is going to be fun to watch. The 6-foot-7, 243-pounder out of Reidsville, NC is the No. 1 tight end in the country in the Class of 2026. He is currently the top-ranked player in Oregon's football class and the top-ranked player in Dana Altman's recruiting class as well. Over the weekend, a video emerged of Harrison shattering a backboard with a vicious dunk. This is the third backboard he's broken this season, according to SLAM Hoops. As the No. 1 tight end in the nation, it's not surprising that nearly everyone wanted Harrison's services on the gridiron. But when it came down to it, he picked Oregon over Alabama and Arkansas. Dustin Colquitt on the Kansas City Chiefs winning culture: 'Pushing for championships'
Dustin Colquitt on the Kansas City Chiefs winning culture: 'Pushing for championships' During his retirement press conference, Kansas City Chiefs legendary punter Dustin Colquitt reflected on the team's winning culture. "I've obviously been like done and retired and stuff, but it was something they had always talked about," said Colquitt. "I think every year, you know, they're pushing for championships, and I think there has to be a certain quota for things." Colquitt has entered coaching over the past two seasons and hasn't been around the Chiefs' facility in years. He was the punter on Kansas City's Super Bowl LIV winning team, which marked the first appearance in 50 years. "I just hadn't been able to make it back, whether it was to bang the drum or do some philanthropy stuff," said Colquitt. "And so this just worked out, perfect timing. We had a couple of days off and got to see all my buddies again. It's fun." Colquitt averaged 44.8 yards on 1,198 punts for 53,660 yards in 255 regular-season games with 103 touchbacks and 483 boots inside the 20-yard line. Kansas City selected him in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft, fulfilling 15 memorable seasons.
