Orlando Pirates pull plug on R70m star: Kaizer Chiefs in the hunt
Orlando Pirates have officially stepped back from the race to sign Congolese goal machine Fiston Mayele, despite years of admiration and attempts to lure him to Soweto.
The Buccaneers had identified the Pyramids FC striker as a top priority, dating back to the era of Spanish head coach José Riveiro. At the time, Pirates sought to strengthen their frontline with a proven finisher, and Mayele ticked all the right boxes.
'Orlando Pirates have been interested in Fiston Mayele since the time they were still under Jose Riveiro as their coach,' confirmed a source.
'There have been several attempts to bring him to the club, and agents from both South Africa and abroad have tried to facilitate the deal. But the reality is, the player's value has soared beyond what is feasible in the local market.'
Mayele has enjoyed a sensational campaign, spearheading Pyramids FC to their first-ever CAF Champions League triumph. The Congolese forward finished as the tournament's top scorer with nine goals, including decisive strikes against Orlando Pirates in the semi-finals and Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.
The 30-year-old's performances on the continental stage have dramatically increased his market value. In the Egyptian Premier League, Mayele continued his stellar form, driving Pyramids to a second-place finish and a run to the Egypt Cup final.
Reports from Egypt reveal that Pyramids have already tabled a lucrative contract extension worth approximately R70 million per season in a bid to retain their talisman. This massive financial package has made it nearly impossible for local clubs, including Pirates.
Faced with this financial reality, Orlando Pirates have now redirected their focus to more attainable targets.
While the Buccaneers have bowed out, Kaizer Chiefs remain interested in securing Mayele's services. The striker previously confirmed he held discussions with Amakhosi head coach Nasreddine Nabi, under whom he flourished at Young Africans SC in Tanzania.
However, Mayele's soaring price tag presents a formidable obstacle for the Naturena-based side as well.
With Orlando Pirates out, can Chiefs now seal the costly deal with Mayele?

Mamelodi Sundowns axe defender for new South American star
Mamelodi Sundowns have made a bold move ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup by dropping Argentine defender Lucas Suarez from the squad, clearing the way for a new South American signing. Insiders have revealed that part of the reason behind Suarez's exclusion lies in the club's intent to free up a foreign spot in their squad. The Brazilians have turned their attention towards signing a striker, reigniting their focus on the South American market. 'What has been brought to our attention is that the Brazilians are searching for a striker and have gone back to that route.' Suarez arrived at Chloorkop on a six-month loan deal, which included an option to extend. Despite an encouraging start where he featured ahead of Malibongwe Khoza, his performance dipped, particularly in high-stakes CAF Champions League fixtures where his weaknesses were exposed. Although head coach Miguel Cardoso initially protected Suarez behind the scenes, mounting pressure forced him to reconsider. The Argentine's game time significantly dropped after a string of costly mistakes in domestic matches. Sources close to the club confirmed that a Sundowns official recently attended the TransferRoom summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Discussions reportedly focused on new foreign prospects, signalling the technical team's readiness to part ways with Suarez permanently. With no contractual obligation to sign him beyond the loan, Sundowns appear set to let the defender leave quietly, making space for a more impactful addition. Interestingly, the shake-up could stretch beyond Suarez. Adding to this, there is uncertainty surrounding the future of star striker Peter Shalulile, even though he travelled with the team to the United States for the Club World Cup. But talks seem positive recently. 'It would appear the club is now making plans to recruit a possible replacement.' Do Mamelodi Sundowns need a new striker? Bafana B striker Radiopane urges attackers to be ruthless against Comoros
South Africa striker Boitumelo Radiopane is urging attackers to be decisive in front of goal when they take on Comoros in their Cosafa Cup semifinal clash at Free State Stadium on Friday (6pm). Bafana finished top of Group A but the Orlando Pirates attacker said they missed a lot of opportunities but he is confident they have learnt from those moments and ready to deliver against Comoros. 'We tried every day to finish the chances we get in training because that is where the work starts,' he said. 'I am happy with the group of players I'm surrounded with because we all want to reach the same goal, which is to win, and to do that we have to score as many goals as we can. 'All I can say regarding our decision-making in front of the goals is we need to be calm and not be selfish. If I'm not in a good position to score, I have to give it to the next player who is in the better position and to win the game for us. 'The only way to reward our defence is to score for them because they are doing everything well and everything they can for the opposition not to strike at us.' Radiopane said the mood in the South African camp is a mix of calm confidence and quiet determination.
