Everyone Is Freaking Out Over Elizabeth Olsen In A New Rom-Com, And More TV And Movie News You Need To Know

Yahoo6 days ago
This week in Screen Time, I hype up how funny and great Bad Bunny was in Happy Gilmore 2. I also share what's all over my FYP — like a rom-com with Elizabeth Olsen and the third Avatar movie dropping amazing trailers — and what we've got going on over on BuzzFeed Celeb's YouTube channel, plus so much more. Listen, I even find time to share the classic Hollywood movies I think everyone should watch. Thanks for joining me!
Happy Gilmore 2 — watch for: Bad Bunny and about 1,000 other cameos
Streaming on Netflix
I actually hadn't seen Happy Gilmore before this week. I know. I know. It was a big hole in my movie knowledge. So, I watched it, and then I dove right into Happy Gilmore 2. While I still like the original more, this was a very solid Adam Sandler movie, and what made it so great was how jam-packed it was with cameos. From real golf pros, like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, to actors and other famous figures, like Benny Safdie, Margaret Qualley, Steve Buscemi, Eminem, Travis Kelce, Post Malone, and more. It's really a who's who of who you can spot in this movie.
While Sandler, Christopher McDonald, and Julie Bowen slip back into their roles of Happy, Shooter McGavin, and Virginia perfectly, it's actually Bad Bunny who stole this movie for me. He plays Happy's new caddy, Oscar, and he's so effortlessly funny. He fits into this movie so well, especially alongside Marcello Hernández as Oscar's cousin. Overall, it's a very fun movie that's worth watching.
Adolescence — watch for: The most chilling debut performance from Owen Cooper
Streaming on Netflix
Leading into this year's Emmy Awards in September, I figured I would spotlight the Emmy-nominated shows that you should watch (or rewatch) before then. So, this week, I'm hyping up Adolescence, which I consider one of the best Netflix limited series in recent memory. Told in just four transfixing episodes that are one continuous shot, the series follows Jamie (Owen Cooper), a 13-year-old, who is arrested and accused of murdering his classmate. Now, his family, therapist, and the detective in charge are trying to figure out what really happened.
The show is filled to the brim with award-worthy performances from actors, like Stephen Graham, but it's Cooper's unbelievable, chilling performance as Jamie that is incredibly astounding. It's honestly hard to believe this is his first professional acting credit. You'll probably binge-watch this show in one sitting because it's that perfect and enthralling.
These are some of my favorite things from my FYP, feed, and more:
A24 released the trailer for their new film Eternity starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner, and I'm already gnawing at the bars of my enclosure to be able to go see it. The film follows Joan (Olsen), who arrives in the afterlife with an impossible choice. She must choose to spend eternity with the man she spent her life with or her first love. That's right. We've got Lizzie Olsen in a rom-com making sad eyes like she's so good at doing, so I will inevitably be weeping.
The movie will hit theaters this November. You can also watch the trailer below:
I genuinely think one of the best movie-going experiences I've had this year is when the lights dimmed before The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash played. You could hear a pin drop in my theater. The third installment in James Cameron's epic movie series, this movie follows Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldaña) family as they encounter a new, aggressive Na'vi clan known as the Ash People. Everyone is so hyped for this movie, and I think we can all agree that nothing brings film nerds together quite like our love of James Cameron's Avatar series:
Disney / Via x.com
The movie will hit theaters on Dec. 19. You can also watch the trailer below:
This week, over on BuzzFeed Celeb, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach played a hilarious game of Cast Wars to celebrate The Fantastic Four: First Steps. And, let's just say, you think they play a great family on screen, they might be even closer off screen because they knew so much about each other's previous projects, but also about the Fantastic Four and Marvel overall. It's such a delightful and hilarious time:
Also on BuzzFeed Celeb this week, we had the internet's 'white boy of the century,' Logan Lerman, swing by to answer all of our burning questions while playing with puppies. If you thought he was sweet before, wait until you watch the wholesome energy radiating off of this Puppy Interview. Not only did we get to know him a little better, but we also found time to talk about The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Percy Jackson, and much more. It's so cute:
Where I answer YOUR questions about TV, movies, fandom, and more:
Question: Which movies from before 1975 do you think everyone should watch at least once?
For me, it's got to be The Sound of Music (1965) and It's a Wonderful Life (1946). I grew up a huge musical theater fan, so The Sound of Music has always been in my life, and I consider it one of my favorite movies of all time. Nothing compares to Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer's chemistry.
I also have to say It's a Wonderful Life because it's the movie that made me fall in love with classic black-and-white movies. It really lives up to the hype and is one of the best Christmas movies of all time. Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart are mesmerizing together on screen, and watching them in this led me to seek out more of their films. I highly recommend it.
And we're continuing the discussion over here: Tell me, which two movies released before 1975 do YOU think everyone should watch at least once?
Well, that's all I've got for this week's edition of Screen Time. Come back every week to get more TV and movie recommendations, find out which celebs we're working with, and so much more!

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan Reprise Iconic Mother-Daughter Characters in ‘Freakier Friday'

Fast-forward 22 years from the last time Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) traded bodies with her then-teenage daughter Anna (Lindsay Lohan, who looks back in top form) in Freaky Friday. Now all grown up, Anna is a bride-to-be with a daughter of her own, Harper (Julia Butters), and an about-to-be stepdaughter, Lily (Sophia Hammons). Then, oops, it happens again, but this time it's a four-way swap — Anna switches with Harper and Tess finds herself in the teenage body of Lily, who's horrified to find she's now a grandmother. Tess decides the only way to reverse the spell is for Harper (in Anna's body) to go back and meet Anna's first love Jake (the still-dreamy Chad Michael Murray). As expected, things go hilariously wrong. Freakier Friday is fun for the whole family, whether you're seeing it out of nostalgia for the 2003 original or are new to the palpable comedic chemistry of Curtis and Lohan. | In theaters Friday, Aug. 8 PG Solve the daily Crossword

James Cameron Warns That a Real-Life Terminator-Style AI Apocalypse Could Be Closer Than We Think — GeekTyrant

Filmmaker James Cameron might be harnessing artificial intelligence to revolutionize visual effects, but he's also raising alarms about where this tech could take us if paired with weapons. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the Avatar and Titanic director shares his growing concern that the dark future he imagined in The Terminator isn't just sci-fi anymore. 'I do think there's still a danger of a Terminator' -style apocalypse where you put AI together with weapons systems, even up to the level of nuclear weapon systems, nuclear defense counterstrike, all that stuff,' Cameron said. 'Because the theater of operations is so rapid, the decision windows are so fast, it would take a super-intelligence to be able to process it, and maybe we'll be smart and keep a human in the loop. 'But humans are fallible, and there have been a lot of mistakes made that have put us right on the brink of international incidents that could have led to nuclear war. So I don't know.' Cameron sees us teetering on the edge of something big, saying: 'I feel like we're at this cusp in human development where you've got the three existential threats: climate and our overall degradation of the natural world, nuclear weapons, and super-intelligence,' he added. 'They're all sort of manifesting and peaking at the same time. Maybe the super-intelligence is the answer. I don't know. I'm not predicting that, but it might be.' The Terminator launched back in 1984 and imagined a grim future where an AI defense system called Skynet turns on humanity after becoming self-aware. With nuclear weapons and automated armies, it nearly wipes us out. It was sci-fi then, but Cameron believes we're edging closer to that reality. Despite his warnings, Cameron isn't writing off AI entirely. In fact, he's actively exploring how it can improve filmmaking. He joined the board of directors at Stability AI in 2024 and sees a future where AI dramatically speeds up production and cuts VFX costs without slashing jobs. 'If we want to continue to see the kinds of movies that I've always loved and that I like to make and that I will go to see — Dune, Dune: Part Two , or one of my films or big effects-heavy, CG-heavy films — we've got to figure out how to cut the cost in half,' he previosly explained. 'Now that's not about laying off half the staff and at the effects company. That's about doubling their speed to completion on a given shot, so your cadence is faster and your throughput cycle is faster, and artists get to move on and do other cool things and then other cool things, right? That's my sort of vision for that.' Still, when it comes to storytelling, Cameron isn't convinced AI can ever truly replace human creativity. In a previous interview, he shot down the idea of AI-written screenplays. 'I just don't personally believe that a disembodied mind that's just regurgitating what other embodied minds have said — about the life that they've had, about love, about lying, about fear, about mortality — and just put it all together into a word salad and then regurgitate it… 'I don't believe that's ever going to have something that's going to move an audience. You have to be human to write that. I don't know anyone that's even thinking about having AI write a screenplay.' So while Cameron is open to using AI as a creative tool, he's clearly drawing a line between innovation and annihilation. The tech might help make blockbusters more affordable, but if it finds its way into weapon systems, we could be headed straight into Terminator territory. Check out Rolling Stone to read Cameron's full interview and hear more of his thoughts on AI, filmmaking, and our uncertain future.
