BJP's Amit Malviya junks P. Chidambaram's negative view on economy
Chidambaram's attempt to credit the UPA government for economic reforms also did not go down well with Malviya who wrote in a post on social media platform X: 'It's truly pitiful how a former Finance Minister displays such selective amnesia regarding India's economic journey.'
'To claim that the concept of 'profit not being a bad word' originated solely during his tenure conveniently ignores the reality that those reforms, however necessary, were half-baked measures, forced by a crippling Balance of Payments crisis,' said Malviya, in-charge of BJP's National Information and Technology Department.
Earlier, the Congress leader, in a post on social media platform X, said: 'That 'profit' in business is not a bad word became government policy in 1991 when Dr Manmohan Singh was finance minister.'
'The question is how the profit must be shared among promoters, shareholders, labour, government, consumers, society and other stakeholders,' he said.
Malviya responded by saying, 'The former Minister pontificates on profit-sharing, yet seems to forget the UPA era's notorious legacy — the 'Jayanti Tax', rampant corruption scandals, and an environment of policy paralysis that left India languishing among the 'Fragile Five.' Big industries weren't just hesitant, they were actively looking for exits. Profit sharing? Under the UPA, profits seemed reserved for a select few, while genuine enterprise was stifled.'
'Jayanti Tax' is a term used by the BJP to allege corruption under the then environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan in matters related to granting green nod to projects.
While slamming Chidambaram, Malviya also showcased the NDA government's flagship schemes.
'Initiatives like MUDRA Yojana and Stand Up India have empowered over 30 crore aspiring entrepreneurs, fostering grassroots prosperity and ensuring the fruits of growth are shared far more widely than ever conceived during his tenure. That is tangible benefit-sharing, not hollow rhetoric,' he wrote in his post.
Earlier Chidambaram remarked about the economy and said, 'As the Chief Economic Adviser has said many times, the tilt is in favour of capital/promoters and against labour. Wages have stagnated.'
'I may add that because of lack of sufficient competition, consumers are exploited in several sectors, for example, air travel, insurance and pharmaceuticals,' he said.

Former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik slams govt for scrapping metro project
Former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has lashed out at the BJP-led state government for scrapping the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project. Patnaik, in a strongly worded post on X, called it a betrayal of the city's future. "The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project would have reshaped how the city moves. Now, the double-engine government has pushed it 10 years back," Patnaik wrote. The first phase of the Rs 6,255 crore project, from the airport to Trisulia, was greenlit during Patnaik's tenure and scheduled to complete by December 2027. But the project was shelved recently, with DMRC issuing termination notices to contractors. The BJP government defended the move, saying the earlier route wasn't viable and that a more expansive Puri-Bhubaneswar-Cuttack corridor is being planned. "We are preparing a new DPR and forming a committee to study similar metros. The revised plan will connect all major cities," said Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra.

Bjp councillors protest against mayor in Ludhiana and announce gherao of MC offices.
Ludhiana: Tensions escalated in the local civic politics over the weekend, with BJP councillors continuing an overnight protest at the municipal corporation's Zone D office, demanding an apology from mayor Inderjit Kaur for alleged misbehaviour during a meeting on Friday. The councillors, joined by members of the Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal, have vowed to gherao all MC zonal offices from Monday if the mayor does not apologise. The standoff marks a rare instance of cross-party unity, with opposition leaders accusing the mayor of undermining elected representatives and marginalising BJP-held wards. "This is not about personal agendas," said BJP district president Rajnesh Dhiman. "All councillors are elected by the people and deserve equal respect. The mayor cannot treat them like second-class members." Mayor Inderjit Kaur, however, rejected the accusations and refused to apologise. She alleged that the BJP councillors had arrived at the meeting intent on confrontation and begun shouting when they had no substantial issues to raise. "Security was only called after they created a ruckus," she said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologists: Teaspoon On an Empty Stomach Slims Waist from 36 To 22 Health Wellness Journal Learn more Undo "This is not about governance — this is about male councillors unable to accept a woman in charge." She also claimed that a BJP councillor had praised her leadership privately but was now toeing the party line publicly. "They came with a motive to provoke," she said, maintaining that she was not at fault. Party insiders say the row may be fuelled by BJP's internal politics ahead of the district president's election, with hopefuls using the standoff to project their leadership. With state elections on the horizon, some see the protest as a strategic move to close the gap left by three years of limited party mobilisation on civic issues. Meanwhile, the protest took a symbolic turn as councillors spent Friday night inside the MC office, singing patriotic songs amid mosquito bites and rodent trouble. BJP members Vishal Gulati, Kashish Ratra, Anil Bhardwaj, Jatinder Goriyan, and others stayed overnight, with one councillor reportedly even bathing on the premises. Punjab BJP president Ashwani Sharma visited the protest site on Saturday evening, praising the councillors for holding the mayor accountable. "Ludhiana is part of the Smart City Mission. It's your duty to ask how the funds are being spent," Sharma said. "The days of AAP (Aam Aadmi Party that governs Punjab and the MC house) are numbered, and they know it — that's why they are misbehaving with elected representatives. " He urged the mayor to "rise above petty politics" and apologise to resolve the dispute. As Monday's deadline approaches, civic tensions in Punjab's industrial hub are poised to deepen.
