While safety match producers urged to ban cigarette lighters, the 'kadalaimittai' makers wanted the traditional candy to be included in the nutritious meal scheme for the welfare of the families behind the industry. On DMK's onslaught against the union government for not disbursing the funds to the state, Palaniswamy termed it a slanderous remark.
'If there is a fund crunch, what was the need to organise a (Formula 4) car race, or make plans to install pen statue for former CM M Karunanidhi in sea?' he questioned.
Charging that law and order in the state has deteriorated, he said Tamil Nadu police was once regarded as being on a par with Scotland Yard, but has now become a cahoots of the DMK. Further, EPS promised to revive the Thamirabarani-Vaippar link scheme when he comes to power, and provide sarees to women during Deepavali festival.

Stalin woos youth, says DMK govt working for their uplift
Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin made a strong pitch to woo youth towards DMK in the upcoming assembly elections. He announced govt would start giving laptops to college students, countering AIADMK's charges of DMK halting the free laptop scheme. "Youth are the foundation of Tamil society. Primary goal of the Dravidian model govt is to enable growth of youth. This govt is for the youth," Stalin said on Wednesday after distributing appointment orders to around 2,300 youth recruited through state municipal administration department. Stalin said govt was also creating a conducive environment for attracting investments, which spurs economic growth resulting in job creation to benefit youth. "Peaceful ambience, proper maintenance of law and order, skillful youth, requisite infrastructure and schemes rolled out with foresight are helping TN remain on top," he said. Efforts have begun for generation of more jobs in Dravidian model govt 2.0 too after 2026, he added. Political analyst A Ramasamy said such initiatives consolidate DMK's support base. "Schemes such as Naan Mudhalvan mainly attract students from economically disadvantaged groups. These programmes targeting youth are helping the party consolidate its base," he said. However, professor and economist Krishna Raj said the job figures required closer scrutiny. "Filling one lakh govt vacancies is good. But where are the remaining jobs that were created? If these are in the industrial or informal sector, they may lack social security, insurance or benefits," he said.

Swaminathan were the reasons for the decrease in the death rate in India, former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi said in New Delhi on Wednesday (August 6, 2025). Speaking at the launch of The Man Who Fed India, a biography of Dr. Swaminathan by the Singapore-based author Priyambada Jayakumar, Mr. Gandhi said three English words known by all farmers in the country was 'Swaminathan Farmer Commission'. Mr. Gandhi said Dr. Swaminathan had been part of the group of scientists around the world who stood for humanity and nuclear disarmament. 'Swaminathan's works for agriculture has given India's farmers a life,' Mr. Gandhi said. In a panel discussion that followed the book release, Shashi Tharoor, MP, said Dr. Swaminathan worked at a time when the memories of Bengal famine were haunting the country. 'International contacts' Former Planning Board Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said Dr. Swaminathan revolutionised the country's agriculture through his international contacts. DMK leader Kanimozhi said Dr. Swaminathan's works for empowering women and ensuring ecologically friendly agriculture practices were not discussed the way it deserved.

CM: TN has double digit growth of 11.19%
Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin said TN has become the fastest growing state in the country overcoming multiple challenges. Citing a Union ministry of statistics report, Stalin said on Wednesday that TN's economic growth rate has touched 11.19%, surging past the previous estimate of 9.69%. State has achieved the double digit growth rate after 14 years, he said after distributing appointment orders to youth recruited by state municipal administration department. "We have reached the milestone after crossing multiple hurdles and slander," Stalin said. He said DMK would not remain content with this accomplishment, but would take efforts to reach higher up, through concerted efforts in Dravidian model govt 2.0.
