Wagga, Muswellbrook previews: Luke Pepper is hoping for a Helluva Gold Cup Soiree with his in-form mare
Luke Pepper aims to take centre stage at Wagga after having played a cameo role in one of the greatest races ever run in the Riverina.
This year's carnival marks the 21st anniversary of the then unknown Queanbeyan gelding Takeover Target's extraordinary win in the Class 1 on Wagga Town Plate Day with Jay Ford aboard.
'I still remember the day pretty clearly to tell you the truth,' Pepper said.
'Jay rang me and said 'I am riding the best horse I have ever ridden in my life' and I said what is it and he said 'oh, this horse that's in the Class 1.
'And I had a look and I said to Jay; 'it's drawn 16, it's no hope from there, it's won a Maiden at Queanbeyan.

'And he said, I'm telling you, it goes good.
'It led for fun and broke the course record so he wasn't far wrong, Jay.'
Pepper may have started out as a doubting Thomas when it came to Takeover Target but would go on to become one of his closest disciples, travelling the world as the Moruya-bred gelding's trackwork rider.
Pepper's 2025 Wagga carnival ambitions are well beyond a Class 1 as the Canberra-based trainer has his sights set on the feature Gold Cup which comes with the added reward of Big Dance Eligibility.
Pepper's Cup contender is the Yarraman Park Stud bred mare Helluva Soiree who has managed to win four or her last five starts, punctuated by an unlucky fourth in the Canberra Cup Preview.
'Obviously we know it is an absolute quantum leap from what she's been racing in but she's a mare in form, she loves the track and Claire's (Ramsbotham) got a very good understanding of her, they're a good combination,' Pepper said.
'She's got a good gate so she should be in the right spot. She'll have every chance.
'I'm just excited to have a runner in the race but funnier things have happened with these mares when they're in good form.

'She doesn't know what she is racing. I can't fault her, she can't be in any better order leading into the run.'
Pepper, meanwhile, has a strong hand to play on the race prior to the Cup with stable pair Keikoku and Cyclone Rupert flying the flag.
Barnstormer Keikoku has won four races in 30 starts.
The son of five-time Group 1 winner Dream Ahead's only two runs at the Wagga 1200m were a win and last start fourth in the Town Plate Prelude.
'The wide barrier is not too much of an issue for him,' Pepper said. 'We'll ride him and let him have the last crack at them.
'He won at the track and his last run there was huge the other day.
'He's honest and never lets us down. He can't be going any better than what he is.'
Cyclone Rupert, meanwhile, left a favourable impression at his first run for Pepper when come from well back to finish fourth in the Cup Day Sprint at Orange on April 11.
'We were absolutely rapt with his first-up run,' Pepper said.
'Stepping to the 1200m second-up reads really good for him.'

Trainer Brett Cavanough has done his bit to ensure another 'feature win' is added to a family that has been churning them out for close to half a century when Zumbo tackles the Miss Finland Handicap.
Zumbo is raced by Cavanough 's wife, Lauren, on a lease arrangement with Segenhoe Stud.
Zumbo, a daughter of the Widden-bred Zoustar, can trace her own lineage back to Molokai who was a highly influential foundation mare across Segenhoe's owners past and present.
'There's a bit of history there,' the Kosciuszko winning trainer Cavanough said.
Zumbo took no time to get off the mark, winning a Grafton Maiden on debut in the last days of January before the break.
'She was pretty sharp in a jumpout the other morning,' Cavanough said.
'She is a big gangly thing, obviously she is furnishing, but she's an improver, she's well-bred and she's got the form on the board.

'Everything lines up to run well.
'Did I expect to hit a Heavy 10 first-up? No I didn't. Is she ready to run? Yes she is, she's had plenty of work so she'll be going to the races.'
Zumbo's dam, Panna Cotta, was a city winner and stakes placegetter in just four career starts.
One of them was her third in the Scone Jockey Club's Listed Woodlands Stakes, run at Rosehill that year.
And while Cavanough has the 2025 carnival in his backyard as an option for Zumbo, there are other times and places that would suit her equally well.
'I'd take a deep breath and let her recover from a run on a Heavy track and try and find a good track, give her gallop, and aim somewhere without running into the big boys,' he said.
As well-bred as Zumbo is, Cavanough's got one better in the opener, namely Naftali.
The son of Deep Field is the fifth foal of Gracie's Lass who is best known as the dam of Blue Diamond winner Artorius.
Naftali has been a costly conveyance for punters, beaten three times when an odds-on favourite.
'He should have won a Maiden by now but he's had genuine excuses,' Cavanough said.
'I'd never bag him.

The daughter of Sea The Stars drops back to a Class 1 and Maiden Plate and steps up to 2100m. 'This looks a nice race for her. A bit of a gap between runs may suit her as well being a European-bred mare,' he said. Lightly-raced three-year-old Hawker Hall kicked off his campaign with a three-and-a-half length win over 900m on his home track on April 23 and wasn't seen on raceday again until May 26 when fifth to Prima Bella on a Heavy 10 over the same track and distance. He steps up to 1100m this week in the Class 1 Handicap with Jason Collett back on board. 'We wanted to find the right track and run him at home again,' Lees said. 'The other day, it might have just been a bit too heavy for him. 'He's a big, heavy horse and he does like a bit of cut in the ground but not really testing like it was. 'It was just a bit waterlogged that track and made a bit of hard work for him. 'He might be better suited now getting out over just a little bit further to get a more controlled run (in front).' Lees has been pleased with the form of Surreal I Am in Queensland this preparation where he has won two of his three starts and feels he deserves a chance back in New South Wales. The gelding lines up in the Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m) where he will make his presence felt. 'His two wins on the Sunshine Coast were on the polytrack but that said, I can't fault him at home,' he said. 'He will be a place chance.' Joining him in that race is Oakfield Mamselle who is resuming from a spell. While she has a win and a second from three first-up runs, Lees feels she will be improved by this run. 'She seems to be coming up well. Her trials were only fair but her work since has been pleasing,' he said. Lees' other runner for the meeting is Enchanted World in the opening race, the 2&3YO Maiden Handicap (1100m). The daughter of Ardrossan debuted on her home track on May 26 where she settled last and came between runners in the straight to finish a three-and-a-quarter length second behind Pratt. 'She was okay on debut and will appreciate stepping up a little in trip,' said Lees. Lees also has Denuto and Irish Thunder running at Ballina and feels they will be competitive in their respective assignments. 'Denuto hasn't been far away and is close to getting a result. Hopefully he can break through,' he said. 'Irish Thunder ran well first-up. He just got hampered a little. 'He has improved from that and should run well.' ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ The week started well for trainer Scott Henley when stable star Volcanic Love trialled stylishly at Grafton and he hopes it can end on a high note with a winning double. Henley was pleased when the meeting originally set for Lismore was moved to Ballina when his promising filly Confederate Lady races so well. The three-year-old had her first three starts at the track where she recorded an impressive maiden win over 1012m at just her second career start and placed in her other two runs at the venue. 'I'm definitely not disappointed they moved the meeting to Ballina. She loves the joint,' said Henley. Since resuming with a close third in a Class 1 on a Heavy 10 at Ballina on April 8, Confederate Lady has finished third behind the promising Seymour Stars at Port Macquarie and an unlucky fourth to Takemine at Inverell. 'She was just a gallop short going into that run because we'd had plenty of rain up here and couldn't get her tied right down. 'Then she ran into a good horse at Port Macquarie. 'Last start she got back further than we expected and was a bit stiff. The daughter of Supido is out to add to her record when she steps out in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1000m) where she has drawn barrier 15 although she will come in after scratchings. 'I had her in a couple of Class 1 races that were washed out and the only available race at the next meeting has been a Benchmark 58,' he said. 'Each time in those Class 1s, to my way of thinking, she was a good thing. 'In the (benchmark) 58s, we go from a good thing to just a chance. 'From a wide gate this week, she is just a good chance with luck in running.' Henley has been pleased with the two runs of former Victorian three-year-old Zouandme and gives him a good chance in the Country Boosted Maiden Plate (1000m). The gelding raced on a hot speed when seventh at Grafton first-up before being beaten just over a length when sixth at Inverell. 'He has those two runs,' he said. 'He was big in condition first-up and had a good blow after the race. 'He improved a fair bit off that going into the race at Inverell and has come on nicely since then. 'The only reservation I have is the very heavy track.'

Grafterburners primed for round three against Cool Archie in Group 1 JJ Atkins at Eagle Farm
Group 1 JJ Atkins favourite Cool Archie was too good for fellow Queenslander Grafterburners the last time they met, but Kelly Schweida has made a case for the result being reversed on Saturday. Chris and Corey Munce -trained Cool Archie, who has won his last four, and Schweida's colt Grafterburners are the top two betting picks in Saturday's JJ Atkins at $3 and $6 respectively. Cool Archie has had the measure of fellow two-year-old colt Grafterburners the last two times, including in their last meeting in the $1m BRC Sires' Produce Stakes where Cool Archie won from last and Grafterburners finished sixth. But Grafterburners, who scored the $500,000 QTIS Jewel in March, has endured luckless wide runs the last two times he has raced. And it didn't help his cause when jockey Jason Collett dropped the whip approaching the 200m in the Sires'. 'I guess though I can make all the excuses I like, but my horse still didn't win. 'But we definitely should have finished closer the other day.' Legendary jockey Craig Williams gets the call-up to partner Grafterburners in the JJ Atkins (1600m). Grafterburners has never stretched out beyond 1400m but two-time Group 1-winning trainer Schweida suspects the mile won't be a problem. Although he concedes he won't know for sure until he tests him in the JJ Atkins. 'All you can do is win and that is what the Chris Munce horse has been doing,' Schweida said. 'That horse definitely loves the wet but I think it goes good on the dry too. 'He's won four on the bounce, he's a good horse, and I don't know anyone who would be bagging a horse that keeps winning. 'As for my horse, I think he will run a mile but it's hard to say until he has a go. 'He just needs a cosy run rather than getting stuck out on a limb in his races like he has been.' In all-in JJ Atkins betting on TAB fixed odds, ahead of Tuesday's final field and barrier draw, Chris Waller 's Yulong-owned colt Hidden Achievement is on the $6 line with Grafterburners. The others other double figures in betting are Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott -trained colt Farnicle, runner-up behind Cool Archie in the Sires', and Michael Freedman 's gelding Aerodrome. Both are $8 chances.

After passing the 1200m was inconvenienced by Mille De Lune, which shifted out when over-racing. Not only that she was 1100m to 1600m second-up on a heavy track. FORGET THEY RAN Callistemon never really had a chance to balance up right down the straight in the Midway. With clearer running early she would have gone close to winning. HORSE TO FOLLOW Shropshire Lad is just out of class 1 company and lacked Highway experience but his turn is not far off. It was hard to miss the run of the imported mare Quietness who has a nice future in Australia.
