Dante may develop into tropical storm Wednesday
''Dante may reach tropical storm category tomorrow [Wednesday]. Further intensification into a severe tropical storm remains less likely but is not ruled out,'' PAGASA said.
At 4 p.m., Dante was located 1,115 km east northeast of Central Luzon or 1,130 km East of Northern Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/h.
Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the country due to the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) enhanced by Dante, the low pressure area east of Batanes, and tropical cyclone Wipha (formerly Crising).
The enhanced Southwest Monsoon will bring strong to gale-force gusts over the following areas:
• Tuesday: Zambales, Bataan, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Visayas, and Dinagat Islands
• Thursday: Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, Bulacan, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Visayas, Zamboanga del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte, Camiguin, and Dinagat Islands.
• Friday: Ilocos Region, Abra, Benguet, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Visayas, Zamboanga del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte Camiguin, and Dinagat Islands.
''Dante is forecast to move northward or north northwestward over the Philippine Sea from tonight to tomorrow, before turning northwestward towards the Ryukyu Islands and the East China Sea. Warehouses still full of rice buffer stocks —NFA
The National Food Authority (NFA) on Saturday said that warehouses across the country remain full of rice buffer stocks, despite the series of storms that hit the country last week. "Hindi pa din substantially nabababawasn ang ating stock sa mga bodega," said NFA Administrator Larry Lacson in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB. (Our stock in the warehouses has not been substantially reduced.) "Even dumating ang mga bagyo lahat yan ay pinaghahandaan natin. Meron man na-damage dalawa lang. Sa Alaminos, Pangasinan at isa naman sa La Union," added Lacson. (Even when the typhoons hit, we were prepared for them. There were only two that were damaged: one in Alaminos, Pangasinan, and one in La Union.) Lacson also said that the NFA has enough stocks to last for 12 days. That amounts to 452,000 of palay or around 9 million sacks of rice. "Sa kadahilanan na ang pumpasok na mga palay na binibili natin sa magsasaka ay mas madami kesa dun sa mga lumalabas na bigas natin," said Lacson. (That's because the amount of rice we buy from farmers is more than the amount of rice we export.) Meanwhile, the NFA administrator also bared plans of putting up Kadiwa stores in every NFA warehouse soon. Lacson said that this will also benefit farmers, as they could now go to more places to sell their palay. "Sa mga warehouse mismo ni NFA maglalagay ang DA ng kadiwa ng Panagulo. Umpisa po sa Region 1 and Region 3, they slowly, rollout po sa other regions," explained Lacson. (The DA will place Kadiwa stores in NFA warehouses. It will first open in Region 1 and Reg 3.) A total of 7,685,943 people or 2,121,645 families have been affected by Tropical Cyclones Crising, Dante, Emong, and the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat in all regions except Eastern Visayas. The region with the most number of affected individuals was Central Luzon with 2,820,250. Habagat affects Northern Luzon
The Southwest Monsoon or Habagat will prevail over Northern Luzon, PAGASA said in its early Saturday morning forecast. Cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms are expected over Batanes, while partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms are forecast for the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Cagayan Valley. Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience localized thunderstorms. Winds will be moderate to strong along with moderate to rough coastal waters in the northern and western sections of Northern Luzon. 4,000 individuals in La Union affected by inclement weather receive aid from GMA Kapuso Foundation
Four thousand individuals in Bauang, La Union, who were affected by the inclement weather in the past few weeks have received aid from GMA Kapuso Foundation through its Operation Bayanihan project. According to "24 Oras" Friday, among the beneficiaries of the project are husband and wife Paulo and Erlinda Hipol, whose house was devastated by the strong winds and rains. "Itong bagyo lang ho ang talagang naranasan ko talaga, siya ang nagpabagsak ng bahay ko," said Paulo. Paulo's life was also put at risk when a part of their collapsed house pinned him down. The couple has patched up wood scraps and iron sheets for temporary shelter, but food remains scarce. They have not yet returned to work selling fish because the fishermen have been unable to go out to sea. "Ang panawagan ko lang sa kanila, kung meron silang maitutulong sa akin, maski ano, tanggapin ko, maipatayo ko lang ang bahay ko," said Paulo. GMA Kapuso Foundation distributed relief goods and bread to the 4,000 individuals in Bauang, La Union. The residents were also given hygiene kits that were donated by a sponsor.
