Allison makes heartbreaking admission after having to miss Diogo Jota's funeral
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has posted a touching tribute to Diogo Jota on the day of his funeral. Jota was laid to rest with his brother Andre Silva in Gondomar, Portugal, on Saturday in a ceremony that was attended by many of his teammates.
Jota and his brother died in a car crash in Spain in the early hours of Thursday morning. After a wake on Friday evening, which was attended by the family and close friends, the funeral took place at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar catholic church on Saturday morning.
There was a large presence from Liverpool with Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo, Darwin Nunez, Ryan Gravenberch, Federico Chiesa and manager Arne Slot among those to attend. Ex-Liverpool players in Caoimhin Kelleher, Jordan Henderson and James Milner were also present.
However, Alisson was unable to make it to the ceremony, having gone back to his native Brazil during the off-season. Having sadly been unable to attend the funeral of his father, who drowned at the age of 57 in 2021, Alisson was faced with a similarly devastating problem after the shock news of Jota's passing.
Alongside a picture of Alisson and his family with Jota's family, he wrote on Instagram: "Usually, I post things that make sense, but today, nothing makes sense! Once again, an ocean separates me from 'saying goodbye' to someone I love!
"But I know that I am well represented by my club mates! To you, my friend @rutecfcardoso14, just know that you will never walk alone, we will be with you as soon as possible!
"In a moment like this, all we can do is bow down before the Sovereignty of God, and receive grace and help in this time! I'll remember Diogo as a great friend, father and husband!"
Earlier this year, Alisson spoke candidly about the traumatic decision he was forced to make for his father's funeral, with Covid restrictions in place and a pregnant partner.
"When I got the call that my father died, I was an ocean away from home. I was in Liverpool, and we were in the middle of the 2020-2021 season. His death was sudden. A complete shock," Alisson wrote in The Players' Tribune.
"It was even more complicated, because it was right in the middle of the pandemic, and the logistics of getting home were a nightmare. My wife was pregnant with our third child, and Covid was exploding again in Brazil. Her doctor said that it was risky for her to travel, so she had to stay in Liverpool with our kids."
He added: "But it was an impossible situation, because at that time, in order to fly out of the country, you had to be quarantined in a hotel for 14 days when you returned. The thought of coming back from my father's funeral and being trapped in a hotel room by myself for two weeks was hard, but the worst part was imagining my wife on her own for that long. She was going to be in her third trimester, and anything could happen.
"We had to watch his funeral on FaceTime. My brother held up the phone for the entire service, and I was able to pray and cry with my mother, and even say goodbye to my father at his casket. In that moment, as strange as it sounds, you forget that you're on a screen."
Van Dijk and Robertson carried red floral tributes bearing his No.20 Liverpool shirt number. Ruben Neves, who played with Jota for Wolves and the Portugal national team, was among those to help carry his coffin.
Jota and his brother died after the Lamborghini they were travelling in spun off the road in north west Spain and caught fire in the early hours of Thursday morning. The funeral followed a private wake on Friday, which was attended by Jota's wife Rute Cardoso, who he married last month, and the player's family.

Liverpool transfer news: Harvey Elliott sends farewell message and Alexander Isak update
Arne Slot has overseen a number of ins and outs during his second summer transfer window as Liverpool manager and there could yet be more to come in the next few weeks Liverpool get their Premier League season underway against Bournemouth a week tomorrow, and the Reds have already had a very busy transfer window. They might not be done just yet, though, with options remaining in two key areas. One of those is in attack, where the rejected bid for Alexander Isak points to a desire for further reinforcements. With Darwin Nunez drawing closer to an exit, we could see the Isak situation continue to run. Arne Slot is also keen on a new centre-back after Jarell Quansah's move to Bayer Leverkusen. Ibrahima Konate only has one year left on his contract, though he could yet sign an extension, while Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez each have two. There have also been a number of exits. Trent Alexander-Arnold might be the highest-profile star to move on, with Luis Diaz the most expensive sale, while Tyler Morton has also left Anfield. Harvey Elliott could soon his name to that list, with RB Leipzig keen on the youngster. Here are Mirror Football 's latest lines on the Anfield ins and outs. Elliott's farewell message Harvey Elliott has shared a moving message for Tyler Morton after the midfielder's Liverpool exit. Morton, who won the Under-21 Euros with Elliott over the summer, has completed a permanent move to Lyon. "My brother @tylermorton6. So proud my mate!! Deserve it more than anyone," Elliott wrote, along with two red heart emojis. Elliott has also taken stock of his own future, but has yet to make a decision amid interest from RB Leipzig. "I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself. If that's to go somewhere else, then it's a decision that I'm going to have to make and I just need to see what happens," he said earlier in the year. "Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But most importantly, it's just about what's best for my career." Howe comments on Isak Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has provided an update on Alexander Isak. The striker is back in the North East, but was kept away from a bonding session to which players' families were invited. 'The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad and you have to act in the right way. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal," Howe said. Sweden striker Isak was training in Spain as he recovered from a minor injury, missing out on pre-season action in the process. It remains to be seen whether he is still a Newcastle player when the new season starts. Nunez on his way Al-Hilal look to have won the race for Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan international had appeared to favour a European stay, but instead looks poised to move to the Saudi Pro League. Reports suggest a fee of £46million has been agreed. That marks a loss on what the Reds paid Benfica for his services in 2022, even without any of the potential add-ons included in the deal. Nunez, 26, has 25 goals in 95 Premier League outings for Liverpool - many of those games coming as a substitute. He played just over 1,100 league minutes last term, returning five goals and three assists. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Alexander Isak reports for Newcastle training after rest of squad leave
The 25-year-old Sweden international did not travel with his team-mates on their pre-season trip to Singapore and South Korea, ostensibly because of a minor thigh injury, after Liverpool, who subsequently tabled a £110million bid for him, let it be known they remained interested in acquiring his services. Isak, who later informed the club he wanted to explore his options this summer, instead flew to Spain to train at former club Real Sociedad and returned to Tyneside at the weekend, shortly before head coach Eddie Howe and his squad landed back from Seoul and were given two days off. The players were back at the training ground on Wednesday morning and their families were invited to join them after training. However, the PA news agency understands Isak, who reported back to the club's Benton base on Monday, was told not to come in until after they had left and was pictured arriving at around 1550. The £63million frontman has been a huge hit since his arrival from Sociedad during the summer of 2022 and played a key role last season as they ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy with the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons. However questioned about his absence in South Korea, Howe signalled that his actions might have repercussions. The 47-year-old told reporters: 'You have to earn the right to train with us. We are Newcastle United. 'The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad – you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. 'We will make sure that any player earns the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.' Isak is understood to have undergone treatment and light training at a deserted training ground on Monday and it remains to be seen whether he will have any involvement in the club's pre-season fixtures against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid this weekend. The striker faces clear-the-air talks with Howe, with his situation becoming seemingly more complicated by the day as a difficult transfer window threatens to spiral further out of control. Newcastle tabled an improved club record bid for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko on Monday in an effort to beat Manchester United to the punch, but developments since suggest the 22-year-old is more likely to head for Old Trafford than St James' Park. That would represent the latest blow in a transfer window which has already seen the Magpies miss out on major targets Dean Huijsen, Bryan Mbeumo, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, James Trafford and Liam Delap. They have managed to recruit Nottingham Forest wide man Anthony Elanga and, on loan, Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, but with frontman Callum Wilson and midfielder Sean Longstaff having left, there is significant work to be done, with the start of the new season just 10 days away. Howe was already looking for a striker before the Isak situation came to a head and, with three years remaining on the Swede's current deal – he has so far resisted the club's overtures to sign a new contract – there seems to be little prospect of the club allowing him to leave either before they have secured a replacement or for much less than their £150m valuation, having already rebuffed Liverpool's initial approach. Meanwhile, sources on Tyneside have played down suggestions that Newcastle have tabled a bid for AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw, but it is understood they are maintaining an interest in the Germany international.

Revealed: Darwin Nunez 'poised for mammoth wage increase' as Liverpool flop closes on £46m Saudi Pro League move
Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez is reportedly in line for a significant increase in wages should he complete a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. The Premier League champions and Al-Hilal are said to have reached an agreement on a transfer fee for the Uruguayan forward. Al-Hilal are expected to pay a £46million fee, plus add-ons, to sign the forward. It represents a sizeable reduction on the £85m deal Liverpool agreed to sign the forward three years ago. According to talkSPORT, Nunez is expected to benefit financially by agreeing to join the Saudi Pro league side. The report claims Nunez will be paid a staggering £400,000-a-week at the big spending club. This would almost triple his reported £140,000-a-week wages at Liverpool. Speculation surrounding the striker has swirled for much of this year, with Al-Nassr seeing a bid rejected in January. Napoli also expressed an interest but they refused to meet Liverpool's valuation, while AC Milan are another side understood to considered an approach. Nunez had arrived at Liverpool from Benfica but has struggled to live up to his £85m transfer fee. The frontman has scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for the Reds, but has faced criticism throughout his spell for a series of missed chances. Last season, he netted just seven goals and registered four assists in his 45 appearances across all competitions. Nunez was limited to just eight starts in the Premier League during their title winning campaign. His prospects at Liverpool were furthered placed into doubt following the £79m signing of Hugo Ekitike and pursuit of Newcastle forward Alexander Isak.
