Moscow Rejects Ceasefire Proposal as Zelensky Accuses Washington of Lacking Seriousness

Ahmed Emam
Tensions over the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war have intensified as Moscow rejected a 30-day ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and several European nations. The Kremlin insists that military operations can proceed concurrently with negotiations, further complicating efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
Dr. Assef Melhem, Director of the GSM Center for Research and Studies, commented on the matter during an appearance on the 'Midday' program on Alqahera News Channel. He emphasized that the ceasefire initiative has sparked significant debate, with Russia viewing the proposal as a tactical opportunity for Ukraine to regroup and ramp up drone production—an outcome Moscow seeks to prevent through continued military pressure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky harshly criticized the United States for what he described as a lack of serious commitment to ending the conflict. 'If Washington truly wants to stop the killing of our troops, it must impose new and strict sanctions on Russia,' Zelensky stated. However, Melhem noted that the current U.S. administration appears reluctant to escalate economic measures against Moscow.
According to Melhem, former U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed reservations about additional sanctions, arguing that while they might reduce Russia's revenue, they are unlikely to yield meaningful results on the battlefield.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly offered the option of direct negotiations with Kyiv but has resisted the idea of a temporary ceasefire. The Kremlin believes that any lull in fighting could benefit Ukraine strategically, a scenario Russia is keen to avoid.
Melhem concluded by highlighting a growing, albeit informal, alignment between Moscow's stance and certain political voices in the West, including Trump.
This alignment favors reaching a comprehensive memorandum of understanding between Russia and Ukraine over a temporary ceasefire, which some believe may only prolong the conflict without paving the way for a lasting political resolution.

Egypt's electricity minister, Copelouzos Group discuss progress on Egypt–Greece power interconnection

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Essmat met with Dimitris Copelouzos, Chairperson of Greece's Copelouzos Group, and his accompanying delegation to review the latest progress on the Egypt–Europe electricity interconnection project via Greece. The meeting, held at the ministry's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, also explored opportunities for expanded cooperation in new and renewable energy. The project is part of Egypt's national strategy to transform the country into a regional hub for energy exchange, diversify energy sources, maximise returns from natural resources, and strengthen the resilience and stability of the national power grid through interconnection with neighbouring countries. The discussions covered developments in the direct electricity link with Greece, the potential for exporting renewable energy to Europe, and the establishment of large-scale solar and wind power projects in line with Egypt's renewable energy expansion plans. Topics included potential project sites, proposed transmission line routes, results of meetings between the Egyptian and Greek grid operators and the project developer, tendering procedures, European offers, and measures to reinforce the unified grids in both countries to handle additional capacities for transmission to the European network. Essmat described electricity interconnection projects as 'bridges of friendship' that promote sustainable development partnerships. He stressed that linking to Europe through Greece would strengthen Egypt's position as a regional energy hub and boost the economic value of its renewable energy resources. The minister highlighted the Egypt–Greece project as a strategic component of a broader plan to connect with neighbouring countries and ultimately integrate with the European grid. He underscored the importance of interconnection projects—especially the Greek link—in line with President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi's vision and the government's policy to consolidate Egypt's role as an energy hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. Essmat emphasised that the ministry is following a clear plan to maximise returns from renewable energy and ensure its optimal management and utilisation. The minister noted that electricity interconnection and energy exchange help achieve a balanced energy mix, particularly for renewables, while delivering economic benefits for all participating countries and stakeholders. He stressed that Egypt remains committed to renewable energy as a cornerstone of its electricity mix, diversifying generation sources, leveraging natural resources, and fostering mutually beneficial international partnerships.

Egypt Condemns ‘Greater Israel' Rhetoric, Reaffirms Commitment to Peace in Middle East

Taarek Refaat The Arab Republic of Egypt has reiterated its firm commitment to establishing peace in the Middle East, expressing strong condemnation of recent rhetoric in some Israeli media outlets concerning the concept of a so-called "Greater Israel." Cairo described such discourse as provocative and destabilizing, warning that it undermines regional peace efforts and reflects an insistence on escalation rather than dialogue. In a statement issued Wednesday by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt called on Israeli authorities to clarify these reports, which it said are inconsistent with international aspirations for peace and security in the region. 'Such narratives only serve to fuel instability and contradict the shared goals of regional and international actors who are committed to peace and the pursuit of a political resolution,' the statement read. Egypt emphasized that lasting peace cannot be achieved without a return to negotiations and a comprehensive political solution to the ongoing conflict. It reiterated its position that the only viable path forward is the two-state solution, involving the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The statement also called for an immediate end to the ongoing war in Gaza, stressing that continued military escalation only deepens the humanitarian crisis and further distances the region from a sustainable peace. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated

Egypt's Electricity Minister discusses progress on Greece power link

Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy has met with the head of Greece's Copelouzos Group to discuss the latest developments in an electricity interconnection project that aims to export renewable energy from Egypt to Europe via Greece, the ministry said. The meeting between Minister Mahmoud Essmat and Dimitris Copelouzos at the ministry's headquarters in the Administrative Capital reviewed the progress of the project, which is a key part of Egypt's strategy to become a regional hub for energy exchange. 'The electricity interconnection with Europe via Greece will make Egypt a regional centre for energy exchange between the world's continents and will maximise the returns from renewable energy,' Essmat said in a statement. He added that the project is of great importance for achieving sustainable development and is part of a general strategy of electrical interconnection with neighbouring countries, with the goal of linking to the European electricity grid. The meeting covered developments in the project, which will rely on power generated from new solar and wind energy projects in Egypt. The discussions included the locations for these projects, the routes for power transmission lines, and the results of meetings between the electricity grid operators in Egypt and Greece. The two sides also discussed the procedures for tendering and European offers, as well as the need to develop and support the national grids in both countries to accommodate the new capacity for transmitting power to the European grid. Essmat described interconnection projects as 'bridges of friendship' that support sustainable development among nations. He noted that the political leadership is highly interested in such projects and that Egypt is actively participating in all regional interconnection initiatives. 'The work continues within the framework of the state's plan to maximise returns and effectively manage and utilise renewable energy sources from natural resources,' Essmat said, adding that the project is a crucial gateway for connecting Egypt and Europe.
