Karnataka High Court stays trial against Siddaramaiah in BJP's defamation case
The Hindutva party had alleged that the Congress, its Karnataka unit and several of its leaders were responsible for newspaper advertisements published ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections, which contained allegedly defamatory statements about the then-BJP government in the state.
Halting proceedings before the magistrate court, Justice SR Krishna Kumar on Thursday sought the BJP's response to the plea filed by Siddaramaiah.
The same judge had earlier granted similar relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and others named in the case, Bar and Bench reported.
The BJP's complaint alleged that the advertisements had accused the previous Basavaraj Bommai-led government of demanding commissions in public procurement and awarding contracts.
The ads also made allegations of corruption against the BJP-led state government, the party said in its complaint.

Such a decision is likely to compel Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to accept the high command's decision and discourage him from engaging in anti-party activities. Sources suggest that Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar — also a CM aspirant — would not oppose the move, as he shares a close rapport with Kharge. However, commenting on the upcoming meeting of Dalit MLAs, HM Parameshwara clarified on Thursday in Bengaluru that the meeting was called to discuss the report prepared by the Commission headed by retired Justice H.N. Nagamohan Das on internal reservations. HM Parameshwara stated, "Before the Justice Nagamohan Das report is submitted to the government, we need to discuss its contents. No one should be unhappy or confused." "That's why I've called this meeting — to resolve our internal differences first. Once we have the discussion, we'll understand what the MLAs and ministers think. It's said that the survey is complete, but the report has not yet been submitted. The retired judge has assured us that the report will be submitted soon," he added. "Earlier, I had called a meeting at my official residence. This upcoming meeting is a continuation of that — held before the survey back then, and now after its completion. The goal is to ensure there is no confusion," he clarified. When asked about being previously prevented from holding a similar meeting, HM Parameshwara stated, "At that time, there was a plan to organise a major rally, and the party asked us to postpone it. But now, they won't stop us from meeting. If the MLAs want to talk, no one can stop them. It is our discretion."

Assam CM slams Gaurav Gogoi over 'missile strike' remarks, alleges pro-Pak bias
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi -- without directly naming him -- mocking his recent remarks in Parliament on India's missile strike strategy and accusing him of pandering to Pakistan. Speaking to the media, Sarma ridiculed Gogoi's comments regarding India's long-range missile capabilities, sarcastically referring to the Congress leader as a 'great scientist". The Chief Minister claimed that Gogoi's speech was 'celebrated more in Pakistan than in India". 'This is a matter of shame for the people of Assam,' Sarma said. 'One of our MPs questioned why India launched a missile from a distance and not from close range. According to him, we should have fired it up close, like it's some kind of firecracker.' Continuing his tirade, Sarma added: 'You're such a great scientist that you're worried about missile range. Three of his family members hold foreign citizenship, and it wouldn't surprise me if he changes his own citizenship soon. That's why his speeches in Parliament often sound like they're made against India.' Referring to Gogoi's parliamentary constituency, the Chief Minister said: 'Jorhat and Sivasagar are regions that played a crucial role in India's freedom struggle. It's unfortunate that an MP from such a historically significant area is now being hailed as a hero across the border. Since 2014, every speech he has made seems to benefit Pakistan.' New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's endorsement of US President Donald Trump's "Indian economy is dead" remark has not gone well with the Shiv Sena(UBT), a key alliance partner of the Congress in Maharashtra, as well as the INDIA bloc. Countering the Congress leader's sharp criticism of the government over handling of the Indian economy, SS (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said on Thursday, "calling it a dead economy can only come from a position of arrogance or ignorance", a remark signifying the "fractured" ties within the INDIA bloc. The sharp rebuttal to Rahul Gandhi's "dead economy" jibe by Priyanka Chaturvedi, a key Opposition voice, highlights the growing chasm between the alliance partners of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra - SS (UBT) and Congress, which have lately been growing sceptical of each other, over the coming together of the Thackeray brothers. Moreover, the SS(UBT) lawmaker's praise for the Modi government over steering the economy forward has left political watchers perplexed. Taking potshots at Rahul Gandhi's backing of Donald Trump, where the latter said that 'India and Russia can take their dead economies down together', she called it a "Trump'ed up" (fabricated) statement. Notably, Trump dropped a bombshell on Thursday as he mocked both India and Russia over business dealings and wrote on his Truth Social handle, "I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India; their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world. Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let's keep it that way."
