When Gen X marketers decode Gen Z: The weird woke at Goafest 2025

Time of India22-05-2025
HighlightsThe Advertising Club and Advertising Agencies Association of India's annual creativity carnival, Goafest, took place in Goa amidst unusual May rains, setting a unique backdrop for discussions on marketing to Generation Z. During the panel discussion titled 'Ignite the Z Factor: Swipe Right For Relevance: Building Brands Gen Z Cares About,' accomplished marketers Amarjit Singh Batra, Vikram Mehra, and Geetika Mehta emphasized the need for authenticity, sustainability, and social connectedness in branding, while also acknowledging that the best insights about Gen Z might come from the generation itself. Despite the panel's focus on Generation Z, Spotify's 2025 data revealed that the most streamed songs among Gen Z were predominantly from established artists rather than younger musicians, highlighting a paradox in the panel's discussion about the generational shift in creative decision-making.
Rains in the month of May in the land of sun and sand, Goa, is rather weird. It poured throughout the day as champagne was popped and ceremonial lamps were kindled to celebrate the return of The Advertising Club and Advertising Agencies Association of India's annual creativity carnival—Goafest in Goa. Yet, the weather wasn't the only oddity on show.
Amid the drizzle, three accomplished
Gen X marketers
took the stage to decode the ever-elusive Gen Z, only to serve up an ironic, slightly cringe submission: decoding Gen Z should probably be left to, well, Gen Z.
Amarjit Singh Batra, general manager - SAMEA (South Asia, Middle East, Africa) and managing director- India,
Spotify
, Vikram Mehra, MD of Saregama and Geetika Mehta, MD Nivea India, headlined a panel ambitiously titled "Ignite the Z Factor: Swipe Right For Relevance - Building Brands Gen Z Cares About," moderated by seasoned journalist Anuradha Sen Gupta. But instead of providing use cases, the trio quickly pivoted to a disclaimer: the best answers might actually reside with younger folks. Yet, in classic Gen X fashion, they soldiered on with the discussion anyway.
Mehta highlighted, "Authenticity, sustainability, and social connectedness are critical now because of Gen Z. Earlier, a brand could have afforded to not focus on these areas. Gone are the days when you could do boring advertisements and make great products and do great business." Ironically, boring ads are something no one would pin on Mehta, known for iconic campaigns at Hindustan Unilever and later Hershey's. So, low-key, the warning about dull ads was a bit extra. Moreover, great business meant great ad as great ad intends to rake in performance.
"They are people who are invested in work-life-balance, mental health. This is a generation that embraces the gig economy. They want to experience life and try out new things. They are receptive to change. For businesses launching new brands, GenZs are likely to try out first, and if the brands can win them, they can earn their loyalty. GenZs as employees want to be vocal, they want to learn, and they want to engage with the senior management. As an extension to the gig economy, many of them are going to become entrepreneurs," replied Batra when Sen Gupta quizzed him on the traits he sees among the Gen Zs.
The most telling moment arrived when Mehra earnestly suggested letting go: "Creative and marketing calls must shift to younger teams. At Saregama, we now ensure that music selection is exclusively done by employees below 30." Mehta echoed this, highlighting the younger brand managers increasingly driving key decisions.
But here's where it got ironic, or perhaps just straight-up paradoxical: despite their claims, the reality check came courtesy of Spotify's own wrapped data from 2025. Four of the most streamed hits were decidedly non-Gen Z creations: "Pehle Bhi Main" from the movie Animal (composed by Vishal Mishra and Shekhar Raj), "Husn" by Anuv Jain, "Sajni" from Lapatta Ladies (composed by Ram Sampath, sung by Arijit Singh), and "Satranga" again from Animal, also by Arijit Singh. Turns out, Gen Z's playlist is vibing strongly with creations from seasoned, not Gen Z, musicians. Zoya Akhtar, Vikramaditya Motwane, Raj and DK, Reema Kagti, Kiran Rao make into the favourite filmmakers of Gen Z and yet none of them are from the younger generation that Mehra and Mehta were conceding to.
Thus, the panel inadvertently proved a point Gen Z might indeed lead trends, but decoding them might not strictly require generational membership. Despite the woke proclamations and somewhat performative self-awareness, the evidence on Spotify, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Instagram Reels, suggest a more complex reality.
And so, the weird woke remained, hanging awkwardly over Goafest: experienced marketers earnestly advocating to pass the baton, yet clearly still very much holding onto it.

Shimmer, shine and sparkle away with makeup ideas for the festive season

Festive season is here, and there are so many ideas to experiment with for your looks this year. Whether you are the host or attending celebrations at your loved one's home, makeup ideas for 2025 let you go minimal or extravagant. 'Gone are the days when one would doll up just for weddings. Today, be it the Gen Z or millennial girls, or our moms and aunts, everybody wants to look wow, even if it's for an intimate gathering," says celebrity makeup artist Ojas Rajani. A GOOD BASE The no-makeup makeup look continues to remain popular, says Rajani. This, in part, is because international formulations that offer skin-like finish – very often without foundation coverage – are now available in India. 'I think the palette is very natural. People are loving the peaches and the creams and the pinks. While not many people are still very happy with the choice of burgundies and the maroons available, these lip shades are very flattering for medium to dusky skin tones in India and will continue to remain popular," says Rajani who has worked with stars including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Deepika Padukone. It's not just about makeup, though. Rajani notes that it has become common for people to go for brow tattooing, Korean glass skin treatments, and permanent lip and cheek stains, that let you look minimally beautiful without a daily routine. These options work well for a busy festive season, when you probably don't have the time to shape your brows. EYES ON YOU Black and brown liners have taken a backseat. People are in for coloured mascaras and liners, says Rajani. "I am not a liner person, I think it makes you look older. Instead, apply lots of mascara to open up the eyes, and one good shadow. Or, you could do a little brown shadow smudge in your eyelash line – it gives an eyeliner look, but is still smudgy, softer and demure," adds Rajani. Even stars like Padukone and Katrina Kaif don't do a liner look. They rely on the smudged liner look instead, he shares. THE HIGHLIGHT It's all about shimmer, shine and sparkle this season, says Rajani, looking at the many new highlighter launches, and runway makeup trends such as mermaidcore and shipwreck chic. 'Be it Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri or Diwali, using the right face products will help you achieve that festive shimmer and glow. You can add some shine to your face with a gloss, creme blush, highlighter or illuminators. Shimmer, shine and sparkle is a rule." For fair skin tones, pearl and silver highlighters are a good bet, and for medium to dark tones, gold and rose gold highlighters are a good bet, he says. 'You can also have a lavender highlighter moment – that is something being launched by luxury and affordable makeup brands this season," Rajani reveals.

This Malayali music producer's French song remix was streamed over 100 million times on Spotify

How does 23-year-old Sachin Sree Sabari, better known as Sachin SSS from Kerala's Palakkad district, connect to 'Dernière Danse' (French for Last Dance), the 2013 French track by Indila that has racked up over a billion YouTube views? The song, which became the first French-language music video to cross that milestone, is a favourite soundtrack for countless Joker tributes to DC's infamous anarchist. 'Dernière Danse Funk' has since notched up over 100 million streams on Spotify — fuelled by Indian Instagram creators using it for transition videos that mimic the Joker's signature smirk. However, this recognition did not come easily for Sachin. 'I used to produce tracks and post tutorials during my college days at RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura. As soon as I posted a tutorial, I decided to take a short break from releasing music online, until one day, I saw a comment claiming that our track was the same as the one by a few foreign artists. This track was published after our video came out,' he says over a Zoom call. The track was released by artists ZODIVK, MC KRAKEN, and YXUNGXROTICA in February 2024. 'I was very upset when I learned about it. I contacted the artists and the streaming platforms, but they were not willing to help. Then, I shared my concerns, with proof on social media, which garnered response from a few artists,' says Sachin. The artist had created the groovy funk track in less than two hours. Sachin was directed to Navaneeth Krishnan, an artist manager. 'He reached out to the label that owns the track,' says Sachin. 'It took us six months to add Sachin's name to the track's credits. It was clear that those artists purchased the project files, which were meant for educational purposes,' says Navaneeth. 'I am very happy about the track crossing 100 million streams online,' says Sachin, who is a self-trained music producer. Sachin also gained the right to release a track, 'Dernière Danse Funk (Deluxe Version)', with a Malayalam verse, 'eth mood? pwoli mood!' (translation: How's the mood? Great!), a homage to his mother tongue. Sachin has worked with composer Christo Xavier in projects such as Turbo and Sookshmadarshini. Currently, he is working on Rahul Sadasivan's Diés Iraé and a few other movies. He is also working on a few tracks of his own.
