Perlis MB accepts Arau Pas loss as chance for reflection

ARAU: Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli's says the failed attempt to wrest the Arau Pas chief post at the party's election yesterday is an opportunity for self-reflection.

"Personally, I would like to express my gratitude to all delegates and members who attended. Their presence and speeches served as a reminder to me.
"This is indeed a moment for introspection, to balance my responsibilities as head of government and as a member of a party we built together.
"I truly hope the new Arau Pas leadership will continue to solidify our ranks and help reinforce the Perikatan Nasional state government, especially with the 16th General Election (GE16) drawing near," he said in a Facebook post today.

"I believe Arau will remain formidable with its solid leadership line-up, further strengthened by our prominent figure, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who is tireless in pushing this struggle forward.

Alor Setar MP upset after motion to discuss Zara Qairina case in Parliament rejected

KUALA LUMPUR: Alor Setar MP Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said he was disappointed over the rejection of his motion to discuss the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir in Parliament. "I proposed last week to discuss this case in detail in Parliament, but it was rejected with the reason that it will be addressed by ministers during the winding-up session of the 13th Malaysia Plan debate. "I'm not comfortable with that. The session is limited, and this issue has caused public unease. It deserves a full discussion," he said in a press conference at the Parliament media centre here on Monday (Aug 11). Zara Qairina's case has drawn national attention following the tragic circumstances surrounding her death, which involved allegations of bullying. Her case has also raised concerns about the safety of schools. The Perikatan Nasional leader also questioned why a post-mortem was not immediately conducted when it was confirmed the girl had died. "Until recently, the body had to be exhumed. This created some unease, but we understand the need to follow the procedure of law and investigation. "This delay raises questions about whether there is something to hide. The minister should clarify why the investigation did not follow proper procedures," he said. Despite public interest and concern, Afnan Hamimi said the case has seen no arrests or remand even after 60 individuals were questioned, highlighting a perceived disparity in law enforcement. "It's been four weeks with no arrests or remands. Is there insufficient evidence?" he asked. Afnan Hamimi further expressed concern over claims that teachers in Sabah were instructed not to comment on the issue, questioning if such an alleged gag order was real. "As a father, I'm losing trust in our schools, and I'm not alone. The minister assures us that schools are safe, but this is a serious case." He proposed appointing full-time school wardens immediately. He also suggested conducting internal audits and installing CCTV, urging the allocation of a budget for these measures to ensure safety. Afnan Hamimi also called for the enactment of anti-bullying legislation, as bullying cases continue to trend and stressed that such behaviour is unacceptable in a civilised society. Lastly, as an immediate measure, he advocated for the establishment of a special Cabinet committee, stating the need for a dedicated team to tackle such issues swiftly. "This isn't about politics; it's about humanity. We need to restore public confidence," he added. On Aug 8, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) instructed the immediate exhumation and post-mortem of deceased Form One student Zara Qairina by the police. Zara Qairina had been pronounced dead at a hospital in Sabah on July 17, a day after she reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory. On Monday, lawyer Shahlan Jufri who is representing the girl's family confirmed that there were injuries on the body of the 13-year-old, following his observations during the post-mortem process at the Forensic Department of Queen Elizabeth I Hospital here on Sunday (Aug 10).

Early days for naming Ampang candidate in GE16, says PKR

PETALING JAYA: It is still too early to decide on the Pakatan Harapan candidate for the Ampang parliamentary seat in the 16th General Election (GE16), says Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) division chief, Syed Ahmad Abdul Rahman Alhadad, better known as Altimet. Altimet, who is also the Lembah Jaya assemblyman, said the top leadership of PKR would determine all decisions on candidates. 'With regard to speculation about our parliamentary candidate for the next general election, the Ampang division would like to state that it is still too early to make any decision. 'We leave this matter completely to the party's top leadership, in accordance with PKR's internal democratic processes,' he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 10). The Ampang division has drawn attention recently following Tengku Zafrul's official entry into Aug 8, Zafrul confirmed that his membership application had been approved, just two months after leaving Umno on June 2. Altimet said election candidacy was not determined by an individual's residential address, division membership, or party position, but instead follows the criteria set by the Election Commission (EC). He also welcomed individuals from all backgrounds to join PKR in its efforts to build a fairer, more prosperous and progressive Malaysia. 'Our focus remains on strengthening grassroots efforts, protecting the welfare of the people, and ensuring that the reform agenda championed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the party leadership is effectively implemented,' he said.

Kedah Umno Youth slams ‘hypocritical' MIC leader as spat widens

Ties between the Umno and MIC chapters in Kedah have been strained after the latter passed a motion to work with PN in GE16. PETALING JAYA : A Kedah MIC leader has been branded a hypocrite by the state's Umno Youth after he criticised them for joining forces with DAP, as the rift between the two Barisan Nasional (BN) components widened. Kedah MIC chairman SK Suresh was reported to have said that Umno was in no position to talk about loyalty as it was now collaborating with DAP. Suresh also said that Umno was willing to throw the past away after joining forces with its once bitter rivals. He had said this in response to Kedah BN information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin who had yesterday remarked that the coalition would not beg for the support of those who had turned their backs on them. Shaiful also said that loyalty 'is not something to be toyed with, traded during elections and reclaimed in times of difficulty.' His comments came in the wake of a motion passed by Kedah MIC to work with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the next general election (GE16). In a statement yesterday, Kedah Umno Youth chief Raqib Abu Hassan said Suresh was being a hypocrite, while the latter's response to Shaiful was 'shallow'. 'Taking a swipe at Kedah Umno for 'cosying up' with DAP is trite. 'The reality is that it is MIC that has lost its allies and influence in Kedah, not Umno.' Raqib also said that Kedah MIC should stop playing 'hero', adding that Kedah BN would not be cowed by such threats. He also went on to wish Kedah MIC all the best and sarcastically suggested that the Indian-based party no longer needed to be part of a coalition that once came to its rescue. The motion by Kedah MIC was raised at the party's state annual general meeting yesterday, which was also attended by its president SA Vigneswaran. Suresh, however, said that the motion would be brought to the central leadership for a final decision. The motion comes a week after Vigneswaran said MIC was prepared to engage in discussions with any political party to ensure its survival and better serve the Indian community. MIC's future has been under scrutiny after deputy president M Saravanan said the party's direction would be decided at its annual general meeting in October. In an interview with Utusan Malaysia last month, Saravanan said MIC felt like an 'unwanted guest' in the unity government with no posts in the government despite having senior political figures like himself as party leaders.
