Will BJP finally elect a woman President? Nirmala Sitharaman, two others in contention to replace JP Nadda
Since its internal polls started last year, the party has elected ten new state heads and held elections for 28 states and union territories.
Nadda, who is also the Union Health Minister, has held the party's national president post since 2020. His term ended in 2023, but the BJP extended it till 2024 so he could steer the party through the Lok Sabha elections.
The election of the national president will be conducted only after the successful completion of elections in key states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Delhi, and Haryana, among others.
As the suspense about the BJP's new president, some reports suggested that the BJP might pick a woman leader for the top post. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is the top contender for the post, according to a report by India Today. D Purandeswari and Vanathi Srinivasan are the other two names. LiveMint couldn't confirm the names.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently met with BJP President JP Nadda and party General Secretary BL Santhosh at the party headquarters in New Delhi. According to the India Today report, Sitharaman's name has gained considerable traction within the party, with many citing her cabinet experience and organisational depth.
Another advantage of Sitharaman is her connection with the South. As the Saffron Party's first woman president, she can perhaps help strengthen the party's presence in southern India.
Sitharaman, as the party's national president, would also support the BJP's commitment to the proposed 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha, which is expected to come into effect after the next delimitation exercise. Sitharaman is a Rajya Sabha member. She has never won an election.
Before becoming Finance Minister, Sitharaman was the country's Defence Minister and is among BJP's high-profile faces in the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Daggubati Purandeswari, the former Andhra Pradesh state president of BJP, is also in consideration for the top post, according to the report. Purandeswari is sister-in-law of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and is known for her multilingual proficiency and cross-party political experience.
Naidu's wife, Nara Bhuvaneswari, and Purandeswari are sisters.
Purandeswari has served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2009 and MoS in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2012. Purandeswari won the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 from Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh by over 2.3 lakh votes.
Purandeswari name was also making rounds for the post of speaker after 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.
Srinivasan is a lawyer-turned-politician from Tamil Nadu. She is an MLA from the Coimbatore South seat and has been with the BJP since 1993. Srinavasan has also been State Secretary, General Secretary, and Vice President of the party's Tamil Nadu unit.
Sitharaman's name has gained considerable traction within the party, with many citing her cabinet experience and organisational depth.
In 2020, she was appointed National President of the BJP Mahila Morcha, and in 2022, she made history as the first Tamil woman to join the BJP's Central Election Committee.

‘Why is socialist and secular in BJP's constitution': Amid Preamble row, Kharge's retort
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge asked the Bharatiya Janata Party Friday why it had included the words 'socialist and secular' in the party constitution when leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh were calling for their removal from India's Preamble. At a public meeting attended by Congress workers from across Telangana, Kharge read out Article II of the BJP constitution which read: 'The Party shall bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established and to the principles of socialism, secularism and democracy and would uphold the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India'. Commemorating 50 years of the imposition of the Emergency at an event last month, RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale called for a discussion on whether the words 'socialist' and 'secular' should remain in the Preamble of the Constitution because 'they were added later'. Without naming Hosabale, Kharge, who was speaking at an event called 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan', said: 'Now an RSSwala wants to change the preamble of the constitution by removing the words secular and socialist. I challenge you, BJP, (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi, (Home Minister Amit) Shah and everyone. No one can change or remove this (from the constitution). It is my challenge. You won't be able to do so'. Criticising the current BJP rule in the Centre, Kharge said: 'Modiji has visited 42 countries, but he has not visited our own Manipur. Manipur where rape, violence is happening. Why is Modi silent about Manipur? Rahul Gandhi and I went there. Modi has not even peeped into Manipur to see what's happening there'. About the Pahalgam terror attack, Kharge said: 'We had stood behind the country and the soldiers of the country when the terror attack happened. But why did Modi leave the war in the middle? He did not make use of the chance he got to square with Pakistan,' he said. Coming down heavily on US President Donald Trump's announcement that he 'brought peace' between India and Pakistan, Kharge said, 'Why is Modi silent about Trump's announcement'. He added that India's foreign policy has made enemies out of countries everywhere. Kharge added, 'We will teach BJP a lesson. The Congress party will come to power in the Centre…Modi and Shah will leave Delhi when this happens'. In Telangana, Kharge said that 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes will be implemented in educational and employment and local body elections. "No Need For India To Speak": Kiren Rijiju On Dalai Lama's Succession Plan
New Delhi: Union Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju asserted that the choice of the Dalai Lama's successor should rest solely with the spiritual leader himself, reflecting the belief of his followers worldwide amid China's recent statement on the matter. "I am a devotee of the Dalai Lama. Anybody in the world who follows the Dalai Lama wants his successor to be chosen by the Dalai Lama himself," Mr Rijiju said. Emphasising that there should be no ambiguity on the matter, he added, "There is no need for us to be in confusion regarding the Dalai Lama issue. All the people who follow Buddhism as their religion and his followers think that the Dalai Lama should choose his successor on his own. There is no need for us or the Government of India to speak on this." Refusing to directly address Beijing's remarks, Mr Rijiju said, "I don't want to react on China's statement. The people who follow the Dalai Lama think that he will choose his successor. I am not saying anything on behalf of the Chinese government or Government of India." Notably, Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan will be visiting Dharamshala as representatives of the Government of India to attend the Dalai Lama's 90th birthday on July 6. Dalai Lama is the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism. The current Dalai Lama is the 14th in the lineage. Meanwhile, Hollywood actor Richard Gere has also joined in celebrations in Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh ahead of the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama. Earlier on July 2, Tibetan Spiritual Leader, the Dalai Lama, stated that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, a foundation established by him, can only recognise future reincarnations, and no one else has the authority to decide on the matter. This statement rules out any say for China in the process of naming the next Dalai Lama. In a statement on Wednesday, Dalai Lama stated, "The process by which a future Dalai Lama is to be recognized has been clearly established in the 24 September 2011 statement which states that responsibility for doing so will rest exclusively with members of the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. They should consult the various heads of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions and the reliable oath-bound Dharma Protectors who are linked inseparably to the lineage of the Dalai Lamas. They should accordingly carry out the procedures of search and recognition in accordance with past tradition." "I hereby reiterate that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has sole authority to recognise the future reincarnation; no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter, he added. However, China's Foreign Ministry emphasised that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must be approved by the central government in Beijing. Spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Tibetan Buddhism is a religion with Chinese characteristics and that the reincarnation process must follow traditional methods, including the drawing of lots from a golden urn. "Tibetan Buddhism was born in China and is a religion with Chinese characteristics," spokesperson Mao Ning said in a news briefing. The atheist Chinese Communist Party, which annexed Tibet in 1951, has in recent years stepped up its long-standing efforts to influence the Tibetan Buddhist religion and forcibly assimilate the population in Tibet as part of a broader effort to control ethnic and religious minorities. It replicated many of these practices during a fierce crackdown on the Muslim Uyghur population in the Xinjiang region. The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed popular uprising against Chinese control, and relocated to northern India, where he set up a government-in-exile in Dharamshala. In 1989, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for advocating peaceful solutions based upon tolerance and mutual respect. The Dalai Lama has long been cautious about Beijing's attempts to meddle with the reincarnation system of Tibetan Buddhism, a tradition deeply rooted in the spiritual and cultural heritage of Tibet. At the heart of this issue is the belief that enlightened spiritual masters like the Dalai Lama can choose the place and time of their rebirth through the force of compassion and prayer. A significant point of contention is the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, the second-highest figure in Tibetan Buddhism. In 1995, Beijing installed its own Panchen Lama, disregarding the Dalai Lama's choice for the role. The Dalai Lama's chosen Panchen Lama, a six-year-old boy at the time, has since disappeared from public view. In Tibetan tradition, the Dalai Lamas and Panchen Lamas have played key roles in recognizing each other's reincarnations. This mutual recognition process is essential to maintaining the integrity and authenticity of the reincarnation system. Beijing's interference in the reincarnation system is seen as an attempt to exert control over Tibetan Buddhism and undermine the Dalai Lama's spiritual authority. By installing its own candidates for key spiritual roles, Beijing aims to shape the future of Tibetan Buddhism in a way that aligns with its own interests.

"I do not wish to comment on those who do not care," was the response of BJP leader and leader of opposition in state assembly Jairam Thakur when he was asked during a press briefing why Ms Ranaut hadn't commented on the situation in her parliamentary constituency, Mandi, said, "I do not wish to comment on those who do not care". "I do not know, and I do not wish to comment on it. We are here to live and die for those who care. I do not wish to comment on those who do not care," the former chief minister of Himachal Pradesh said yesterday. The actor-politician took the cue and posted a clarification on her X handle today, claiming she was advised by Mr Thakur himself not to visit the region "until the connectivity to the affected areas is restored". "It is heartbreaking to see massive flood devastation in Himachal almost every year now. Mandi district, severely impacted by cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides, saw the most number of deaths (17). Several people have died while a search is underway for several missing in the cloudburst and flash flood-related incidents in Mandi. The flash floods have sent 280 roads, including 156 in Mandi, out of bounds for traffic. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today announced a series of relief measures, including Rs 5,000 per month as rental assistance for families displaced by the calamity, and said that the cloudburst incidents are being studied. "In the last 14 to 15 days, we have seen around 14 cloudbursts. We are currently studying why such frequent cloudbursts are happening," he told reporters. Reacting to Ms Ranaut's social media post, Mr Sukhu said, "She should immediately speak to Jairam Thakur ji." He also reacted to Mr Thakur's press briefing and said that instead of addressing the media, he should help affected people. "Instead of addressing the press in Mandi, he should have gone to Siraj, to the people. That's the duty of a public representative. We are not doing politics. I can show you the call record of my conversation with Jairam ji. Our job is to deliver relief to the people. It is sad that the former Chief Minister is making misleading statements", said Mr Sukhu. Monsoon hit the state on June 20 and since then has cost the state Rs 5,000 crore in damages, as per officials. Several houses have been damaged and vehicles washed away in the cloudbursts. Five relief camps have been set up to house the 402 people rescued, 348 of them from Mandi alone.
