Hidden gem streaming service cheaper than Netflix is perfect for thriller fans
But what if you could cut the cost of your subscriptions by paying for one streaming service that has hundreds of these gripping titles all in one place?
Let us introduce you to Shudder. It's a lesser-known video on demand (VOD) service that works similarly to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus and the like.
Users pay a subscription fee for access to the content library, but, unlike the more mainstream streaming services, Shudder has a more niche catalogue.
Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter.
Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you.
It calls itself 'a premium streaming service offering the best selection of horror, thriller and supernatural movies, series and specials' — but horror is probably the genre it's known best for.
Shudder's general manager, Craig Engler, previously told Mashable: 'Most streaming services are trying to be all things to all viewers. We're focused on one thing.
'The result is that, even though we're not as big as Netflix or Prime Video, our shows and movies are ranked right up alongside theirs, or in many cases ahead of theirs.'
And unlike free streaming services such as Tubi and Pluto, which some TV fans are using as alternatives or supplements to the bigger streamers, Shudder has no ad breaks.
It costs £4.99 per month, or subscribers can pay £49.99 annually, which works out at roughly £4.17 per month.
That makes it 60% cheaper than Netflix, which costs £12.99 per month for the ad-free plan.
Meanwhile, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime and Apple TV Plus all currently cost £8.99 per month without ads, roughly 30% more than the cost of Shudder.
If you're unsure whether to commit, you can sign up to Shudder's seven-day free trial.
Horror fans can subscribe via Shudder.com and watch on a desktop or the Shudder app.
It's also possible to watch on a TV screen with Google Chromecast or Apple AirPlay, or via Amazon Prime Video.
For the latter option, users will need to already have Prime Video and purchase an extra subscription to Shudder on top. With this, all of Shudder's content will appear when browsing Prime Video on the TV.
However, it's worth bearing in mind that you're unlikely to find recent box office hits on Shudder — it's offering focuses more on indie and cult-classics, making it better suited to true horror and thriller buffs than mainstream audiences.
Halloween, Day of the Dead and Insidious are some of the best-known titles on the streamer, while more recent releases include Grafted and The Ugly Stepsister.
When it comes to TV shows, Shudder's offering is fairly light compared to its movie catalogue.
Popular series include Hannibal, starring Mads Mikkelsen, horror anthology series Channel Zero and Creepshow (the latter of which is based on the 1982 horror comedy classic), as well as reality competition show Dragula.
Documentaries such as Cursed Films, which explores the myths and legends behind some of Hollywood's biggest horror movies, and The 101 Scariest Horror Movie Moments of All Time are also popular TV shows on the streamer.
Shudder produces its own original and exclusive content too, and in addition to the online library there's Shudder TV, a 24/7 channel with an endless stream of horror movies that's updated weekly.
Metro reporter and resident horror fan, Rebecca Sayce, uses Shudder and gives it a glowing review.
'As an avid horror fan (from big blockbuster haunted house flicks to extreme niche indie splatterfests), Shudder is an essential for me. The streaming service compiles everything from the latest huge feature films to shorts, original documentaries, and hidden gems otherwise lost among their peers. The curation of titles is a testament to the Shudder team's passion for horror, offering a variety for genre fans not seen with other streaming services — and for just £5 a month, a bargain at that.
'I've discovered many titles I wouldn't otherwise have seen thanks to Shudder, like their incredibly informative Horror Noire documentary exploring the history of Black horror cinema, and films that have fast become constant watches for me (like 2023 smash hit Late Night With The Devil, and Demian Rugna's unbelievably brutal When Evil Lurks). If you're a fan of all things that go bump in the night, you need to invest in Shudder.'
Reviews of Shudder are mostly positive, with fans praising the low cost and unique content offering.
On Reddit, one user said of the streamer: 'They have a pretty varied variety of films. Classics, B-movie, modern. It runs the gamut. You're bound to find something that interests you.'
Another added: 'Most of the critically acclaimed festival movies seem to end up on Shudder first. So I'm all about it.'
One fan wrote: 'I have it and always used it. They have good stuff and it's cheaper than most other services,' while another said: 'Insane deal. I have had Shudder since it was first released and never felt the need to cancel.'
But others said they tend to only use Shudder for a few months at a time, mostly around Halloween.
Reddit user RestlessAstronaut wrote: 'I've had Shudder on and off for the last few years. It has some great content on there…but…there's not a whole lot of new content uploads per month.
'I've found it's better for me personally to get it for a month or two, watch what's new then put it on pause for a few months and come back later.'
Another user agreed: 'This is exactly what I do with it…over the Halloween period it's great to grab for a month, but I agree I wouldn't have a constant sub to it without more new content a month.' More Trending
And one added: 'I'm also one of those who orders Shudder on October 2 and cancels it on November 2.'
Others suggested that fans of horror and thrillers can save money by using Tubi instead.
'Honestly, Tubi is where it's at for horror in my opinion. If you already have Netflix or another service, Tubi fills in the gaps for a lot of horror movies. And it's free,' one user said.

Another added: '[Shudder] has some great stuff, but Tubi has just as good if not a better selection AND it's free.'

Netflix streaming 5 'much funnier' movies than Happy Gilmore 2 - including another Sandler classic
Fans left disappointed by the return of Happy Gilmore should look no further than these comedy classics all available to stream on Netflix Viewers left gutted by Happy Gilmore's comeback should turn their attention to these dependable comedy gems that are all available to stream on Netflix. One of them even features Adam Sandler himself during his comedic prime for those craving a hit of nostalgia. The Hollywood star's return as the foul-mouthed professional golfer is without doubt one of this year's most eagerly awaited follow-ups. Yet it hasn't exactly struck gold with reviewers, with The Hollywood Reporter branding it "terrible" alongside "moronic, witless and relentlessly vulgar". Ordinary punters have also felt rather deflated, as one commented on X: "Happy Gilmore 2 is, unfortunately awful. I had to force myself to watch all of it", reports the Express. "I just kept hoping it would just end. It was like watching something made by a 10 year old." Fortunately, there are loads of rib-tickling choices ready to stream for anyone needing a proper giggle this weekend. Bridesmaids When Annie Walker (played by Wiig) gets chosen as chief bridesmaid for her bestie Lillian's (Maya Rudolph) big day, mayhem kicks off when she locks horns with posh interloper Helen (Rose Byrne). The flick has stayed a crowd-pleaser all these years on, with one Google review gushing: "Love this movie lol, 10 years now it's been making me laugh. "Years later.. I still watch probably twice a year. There's not one filler part.. it's all funny and if it's not it has a reason for it. Pretty great soundtrack too. All the actors at their absolute best." Bridesmaids is available to stream on Netflix. Mean Girls Penned by and featuring 30 Rock icon Tina Fey, this blockbuster comedy remains just as cherished today as it was upon its debut over two decades ago. One five-star Google review dubbed it an "untouchable classic. Funny, real, and forever quotable." A Letterboxd user agreed: "One of my all-time favorite movies, I love watching it because it makes me laugh so much and it's super iconic. "Everything about this masterpiece fascinates me and I'll never get tired of watching it." Mean Girls is available to stream on Netflix. Big Daddy When layabout Sonny faces being dumped by his girlfriend, he pledges to become more mature and accidentally finds himself caring for young Julian (Dylan and Cole Sprouse) who appears on his doorstep. Anticipate loads of mayhem and reckless antics from this unapologetically daft comedy one admirer dubbed "an absolute classic". "I am currently watching this again after so many years," they continued. "I can't believe this was out when I was 9 and the movie is still as awesome as it was when it was released." Big Daddy is available to stream on Netflix. Pineapple Express When Dale (Rogen) and his dealer Saul (Franco) become embroiled in a criminal conflict, they find themselves with little choice but to flee. Yet matters deteriorate further when a dangerous crime boss and a bent police officer begin pursuing them. One Letterboxd user's five-star review said: "A stoner comedy classic. I've seen this bad-boy around a dozen times and I laugh my damn a** off with every viewing. "The laughs keep coming and coming, it's a laugh a second kind of comedy, sure it's silly, but silly can sometimes be great." Watch Stranger Things on Netflix for free with Sky from £15 Sky Get the deal here Product Description Superbad The film has since achieved cult status, widely regarded as one of the most hilarious movies ever made that helped propel stars like Michael Cera and Emma Stone to fame. One passionate Letterboxd review confessed: "I can count on two hands the number of movies that are able to make me laugh out loud on a second viewing; however, Superbad is the only movie that will continue to make me laugh out loud on the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh viewing, etc. "Michael Cera steals the show. His awkwardness is unlike anything I have seen before and he never fails to make you either laugh or cringe." Superbad is available to stream on Netflix.

‘That cliffhanger was evil!' 7 amazing shows fans vow were cancelled too early
TV shows being cancelled left, right, and centre feels like an all-too regular occurrence nowadays. However, just because an exhilarating thriller or a world-bending sci-fi series might have been axed before it could have a satisfying ending, that doesn't mean we can't still appreciate them years later. Metro readers have shared their favourite shows that they feel should have had at least one more season – and their answers are bursting with passion. From a beloved Netflix zombie comedy to a BBC historical drama, these are programmes that not only were cherished by their audiences but have also stood the test of time. Of course, we at Metro also shared our favourite TV picks that ended way too early below, which we can't help but still be extremely sour about. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. If you want to join the discussion, you can do so on our Facebook page – otherwise, read on to discover the seven shows chosen by our readers that deserved better. When TV fans discuss shows that were ended abruptly but deserved to be on air for longer, Firefly is frequently mentioned. 'Firefly deserved 10 more seasons,' Metro reader Nazni Ali remarked. The space Western drama starring Nathan Fillion as Serenity captain Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds originally premiered in 2002, and only aired for one season. Yet its legacy has lived on for over two decades. One fan called Lee Luntley said that while they'd 'love' to see more Firefly in future, 'if it doesn't capture the same magic as before then it's a bad move'. Firefly is available to stream on Disney Plus. The passion for Santa Clarita Diet cannot be overstated. Starring Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore, the show follows a couple whose lives are turned upside down when it emerges that Sheila (Drew) is showing signs of becoming a zombie, and therefore develops a bloodthirsty appetite. The show – which has been described as 'brilliant', 'weird' and 'genius' in equal measure – abruptly ended after just three seasons, and fans are still bitter about it. 'At least Firefly got a film as an ending, Santa Clarita Diet deserves the same,' Metro reader Paul Ingra quipped, while Heather Louise McDonald added: 'Santa Clarita Diet deserves more than it got.' Santa Clarita Diet is available to stream on Netflix. 'Save the cheerleader, save the world.' Those six simple words captured audiences around the world when Heroes premiered almost 20 years ago, in 2006. The first season boasted an average of 14 million viewers, and it's still regarded as top-tier television. There have been attempts to revive Heroes following its initial 2010 cancellation. In 2015, a spin-off series called Heroes Reborn was released, and it's been claimed that another titled Heroes: Eclipsed is in development. Nonetheless, fans, including Jimi O'Doherty, wish there had been at least one more season of the original series. 'Wish they did volume 5 Brave New World,' they wrote. Heroes is available to buy on Prime Video. Metro's TV Editor Sabrina Barr shares the shows that she's personally gutted were axed before their time. Agent Carter It's been almost a decade, and I'm still heartbroken that Agent Carter was brushed to one side after just two seasons. As a Marvel superfan, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) instantly became one of my favourite characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when she made her debut in the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger. Following the presumed death of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Peggy is heartbroken, but jumps into action – and that's where Agent Carter picks up. It was a brilliant continuation of her story, and it's gutting that it was cut short. Agent Carter is available to stream on Disney Plus. 1899 I still haven't had a chance to watch Netflix's thriller series Dark yet. However, I did manage to catch 1899, a drama made by the same creators, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, and it blew my mind to smithereens. At first, it seemed as though it was just going to be a chilling period drama set on an eerie ship. But there is so much more to it than that… and I'm wary of revealing too much for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. All I'll say is – if you enjoy a psychological thriller, period dramas, sci-fis, a brilliant ensemble cast where characters from different countries who might have never met cross paths, then you're in for a treat. 1899 is available to stream on Netflix. Glow I'm a sucker for stories set in the 80s, and I love a fantastic female-led ensemble cast. So the minute I saw a glimpse of Glow, I knew that it'd be right up my street. I'll profess – I didn't know much about wrestling beforehand, and I'm still nowhere near an expert. But learning about the 'Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling' gave me a stronger appreciation for the sport, and made me want to find out more. It's such a shame that Glow was cancelled due to Covid, and that it couldn't be resuscitated. I will continue to hold it hope that even six years later, it could have legs in the future. Glow is available to stream on Netflix. Shadow and Bone As a devout fantasy fan, Shadow and Bone mesmerised every ounce of me. I haven't read the books (they're on my To Be Read list), but I had every faith in the show, and I wasn't left disappointed. The disappointment did come, however, when Netflix confirmed that season two would be its last, despite ending on a huge cliffhanger. What's more, this meant that the previously announced spin-off Six of Crows was also no longer going forward. If you've ever stumbled upon a Netflix post on Instagram and wondered why so many people are urging the streaming site to save Shadow and Bone, give it a watch and discover for yourself. Shadow and Bone is available to stream on Netflix. The Last Kingdom is an exception on this list, as the story did conclude in a feature-length film titled The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, which was released on Netflix in 2023. However, for some fans, that didn't suffice. 'Would have preferred another series rather than Seven Kings Must Die,' Metro reader Michael Webb quipped about the show. The historical drama originally premiered on BBC Two in 2015, before moving to Netflix for its final three seasons. The Last Kingdom is available to stream on Netflix. Lockwood and Co. had a lot of promise. So much so that one of the lead actors, Ruby Stokes, stepped away from her role on Bridgerton to commit to the project. Despite the acclaim it received from critics and fans alike, the supernatural detective series was cancelled after just one season. 'Netflix couldn't even explain their decision with any conviction 'It was one of our top-rated shows ever, but the decision was made to not greenlight season two and concentrate on making new quality content',' Kirsty Sparkman fumed while speculating over the thought process behind the decision.. Macy Macleod added that they've 'never forgiven' those who decided Lockwood and Co. would be axed. Lockwood and Co. is available to stream on Netflix. Pushing Daisies is another TV show that fans will often bring up as an example of a series that not only was cancelled too soon, but also deserves a comeback. Starring Lee Pace, Anna Friel and Kristin Chenoweth among the stacked cast, the comedy-drama is about a pie-maker called Ned (Lee) who has the ability to bring dead things back to life, and uses the unusual skill to solve murder cases. The ending of the show was altered when the creators knew that it was being cancelled, to try and provide fans with a satisfying ending. But several people admitted that they felt as though it was rushed. 'Pushing Daisies, that cliffhanger was evil!' Vicky Cosgrove wrote in frustration. Pushing Daisies is available to buy on Prime Video. There are a plethora of sci-fi shows to choose from when you're looking for a new programme to binge on streaming, but one that stands out among fans is Dark Matter. More Trending Not to be mixed up with the series of the same name that premiered on Apple TV Plus last year, the 2015 space-based drama Dark Matter lasted for three seasons. 'Dark Matter deserved season four on Syfy. Syfy cancelled it after three seasons, even though season three was the build-up for season four. Stupid,' a Metro reader going by the name SaveHolbycity David stated. Dee Lever-Johns listed Dark Matter among a list of other sci-fi and fantasy shows that have had premature ends, including Killjoys, Shadow and Bone, Warrior Nun and Lockwood and Co., adding: 'Yet they keep some total rubbish on TV.' View More » Dark Matter is available to stream on Apple TV Plus and Prime Video. Got a story? Adam Sandler's 'best ever' films including one that should have won him Oscar
The actor has had a lucrative deal with the streamer for years Adam Sandler's latest film has arrived on Netflix as he revisits one of his most popular characters. Happy Gilmore 2 is now available on the streaming giant's platform. It is the latest title in the long-term deal between the streamer and actor. Sandler has a lucrative agreement with Netflix, initially signed in 2014 and renewed multiple times, which has seen a number of movies added to the service. The deal was reportedly $250 million for four films. This includes movies starring the comedian to ones produced under his Happy Madison company. Here are ten of the best Adam Sandler titles that are currently streaming on Netflix. Uncut Gems Uncut Gems is the film that kickstarted a partnership between Sandler and the Safdie brothers who co-wrote and directed the title. Sandler stars as a charismatic jeweller who makes a high-stakes bet that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime. In a precarious high-wire act, he must balance business, family and adversaries on all sides in pursuit of the ultimate win. This is very different from Sandler's typical comedies and comes with a warning that it is at times, uncomfortable to watch. Many fans believe this is the one that the comic actor should have received an Oscar for. One fan said: "Adam Sandler 'was robbed' as Kathy Bates advised him. That he didn't win an Oscar for his starring role in Uncut Gems was an outrage. The directing was equally deserving of an Oscar nod. Likewise, the screenplay, and the overwhelming score, which conveyed a pounding chaos which coincided with the "in your face" story. All of these components of the film combined to produce a heartpoundingly suspenseful, and tension-filled experience." Uncut Gems is streaming on Netflix. Hustle Adam Sandler's highest rated film according to Rotten Tomatoes with 94% is 2022's Hustle. It's another one of his titles with a strong sports link and has him giving an earnest performance as oppose to digging for gags. A significantly less intense watch than Uncut Gems, Sandler plays a down-on-his-luck basketball scout who finds himself ready to return home for good. He yearns to achieve his dreams of becoming a coach. However, after he discovers an extraordinary and completely unknown player abroad, he brings the phenom back without his team's approval. One fan claimed: "I thought that it'd just be another sports movie, but it was more than I expected. It was a heartfelt story, with undertones of "Rocky" nostalgia, and an exceptional cast. Easily, one of Sandler's best" Hustle is streaming on Netflix. The Meyerowitz Stories Written and directed by Noah Baumbach, this is another that isn't your typical Sandler movie. An ensemble piece in which his performance is complimented by the presence of Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson and Adam Driver. The film follows estranged siblings who come together to celebrate their father, Harold Meyerowitz, and his work as an artist during an unorthodox family reunion in New York. One fan said: "Hilarious, heartfelt, quirky, witty family comedy-drama. Oh and it also stars a few acting giants too, Hoffman, Bergen, Stiller, Weaver, Thomspon and Sandler like you've never seen the dude before. Can't recommend this stellar little film highly enough." You Are So Not Invited to my Bat Mitzvah This 2023 release earned 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and sees Sandler take on a smaller role. Instead, it's his daughter who takes the spotlight. The film follows Stacy and Lydia are BFFs who've always dreamed about having epic bat mitzvahs. However, things start to go comically awry when a popular boy and middle school drama threatens their friendship and their rite of passage. One fan surmised: "A little cheesy, a bit predictable in some parts, but still an overall feel good film. You'll feel some emotions, get a few laughs. Adam Sandler steps back to let his (real life!) daughter Sunny steal the show" You Are So Not Invited to my Bat Mitzvah is streaming on Netflix. Leo A more family friendly entry sees Sandler play animated character Leo the Lizard. Leo has been stuck in the same Florida school for decades. When he learns he only has one year left to live, he plans to escape to freedom, but instead has to rescue his class from their horribly mean substitute teacher. One fan said: "Such an underrated movie! Most cartoon movies are for kids but you could watch this one even if your an adult and still enjoy it." Leo is streaming on Netflix. Big Daddy One of Sandler's classics currently available on Netflix sees him play irresponsible Koufax who is dumped by his girlfriend for an older man. He adopts a five-year-old boy to impress her. But after spending time with him, he decides to become the father the boy needs. One fan said: "Like a lot of the golden age Adam Sandler films, it is quite a memorable and eminently quotable film. It also has great lessons about growing up and not judging books by their cover, and not being a bully." Big Daddy is streaming on Netflix. Happy Gilmore While Sandler is reprising his role of Happy Gilmore for a new sequel just released on Netflix, the original is also available. Time will tell whether or not fans believe if the follow up lives up to the 1996 original. Those that aren't familiar with the first outing should definitely check it out. Sandler plays titular character Happy, an aspiring hockey player who joins the PGA tour to make some money to save his grandma's house. But he doesn't really have the temper to go up against the favourite of the game and win the championship. One fan posted: "One of the most beloved Adam Sandler movies of all time. It received a reputation as a cult classic. The movie strikes at an effective blend of funny silly comedy, and relatable drama." Happy Gilmore is streaming on Netflix. Spaceman If you're looking forward to Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary then Spaceman is a good primer. It holds a similar premise albeit some significant differences. Six months into a solo mission, a lonely astronaut confronts the cracks in his marriage with help from a mysterious creature he discovers on his ship. A fan claimed: "This movie is a true masterpiece, designed for those who appreciate deep, reflective, and psychologically advanced narratives. It's not merely entertainment, but a profound exploration that offers wisdom and insight." Spaceman is streaming on Netflix. Adam Sandler: Love You Strictly not a movie but Sandler's latest comedy special. However, directed by one of the Safdie's it is bookended by what feels like a short film. There are even some on stage antics that will make you wonder which parts are scripted. Receiving 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning an Emmy nomination, it deserves a place among Sandler's best and a must watch for fans of the comedian's career. On fan claimed: "I honestly think this was a piece of art, there is no other comedy special like it, making you feel like you're watching a scene of a movie, great songs, the ending is something that we'll look back and appreciate so much more in the future."
