‘Giving racism': Internet unleashes on Aussie's Japan post

Perth Now3 days ago
An Australian influencer and business owner has been grilled amid claims of cultural appropriation during her holiday to Japan.
The internet unleashed at All For Mimi founder Sophia Begg, known online as Sopha Dopha, after she posted a series of photos capturing her first day in Tokyo to her Instagram.
Begg can be seen posing against a vending machine sporting a polka dot bandana, bright pink shorts and a baggy white t-shirt branded with Japanese characters 'Suki' which translates to 'like' or 'love.'
Subsequent photos show Begg and her two friends, including employee Bailey, indulging in matcha and ramen while exploring the city.
The 21-year old's post also featured Chinese rapper SKAI ISYOURGOD's song Blueprint Supreme playing over the top.
With a following of more than 660,000 on the platform, critics were quick to unload on the TikTok star. Sophia Begg in Tokyo, Japan. Credit: Instagram @sophadophaa_
'This honestly reflects white privilege on another level… being able to pick and choose parts of someone else's culture for aesthetic without needing to understand or respect it. Meanwhile, we as Asians grow up being shamed or mocked for these same things. It's not just a song or a vibe, it's a lived culture, and treating it like a trend is harmful,' one person wrote.
'Look good but it's giving racism,' said another.
A third added: 'The casual racism is sending me LMAO.'
Many of the people unhappy with Begg's upload took issue with the song choice given it is in Mandarin and is not by a Japanese musician.
'Girl I love you but please the song isn't even in Japanese,'
'You should change the song or remove it. its not even Japanese,'
Despite calls for the influencer to remove the audio from the post, Begg has not taken it down or responded to the negative comments.

Viral social media account pretending to be Coldplay concert CEO's daughter exposed as fake

A French model has denied she is the daughter of former Astronomer CEO after a viral TikTok account appearing to use videos of her for content. The account, @marinagirll, appeared two days ago, shortly after the infamous Coldplay kiss cam moment which caught former Astronomer CEO Andy Bryon hugging the company's head of HR Kristin Cabot. The account captioned one viral video, 'Reconnecting with life after your dad's affair makes national news' with the woman tying her hair up whilst standing at an outside fire pit, which angered many users on TikTok. One commentor said 'Wow imagines using your dad's affair to get famous. You're a nobody lol. Check in on your mom maybe... ?" TikToker Lizthemillienial posted a video saying the video was not real. A photo posted by his wife to Facebook shows Mr Bryon with his two sons, but there were no posts or photos that prove that he has a daughter. The videos on the Marina Bryon account were allegedly taken from the social media of a French model and singer-songwriter, Julie Tuzet. Miss Tuzet, who lives in Paris, posted to TikTok that she is not the CEO's daughter. She said, 'Guys, I am not the CEO's daughter. You probably saw this video of me at a fireplace reconnecting with nature. It's just someone who stole my videos and content from TikTok to create this fake news, and it's going viral. The TikTok account comes after Mr Byron resigned as CEO of Astronomer, an AI tech firm based in New York. The firm posted a statement to X over the weekend stating that they were investigating the video after the incident at Coldplay's Boston concert went viral. It is unclear whether or not Ms Cabot will be forced to resign, but she currently remains in post whilst the investigation is ongoing.

Coldplay CEO's ‘daughter' responds to scandal

Don't miss out on the headlines from Real Life. Followed categories will be added to My News. A social media account claiming to be the daughter of Astronomer's ex-CEO Andy Bryon, who was caught on the Coldplay kiss-cam allegedly cheating, went viral over the weekend, pulling in millions of views before the truth emerged. The account, calling itself ThatMarinagirll, launched just a day after the Bryon scandal hit headlines, claiming to be Marina Byron, the supposedly 23-year-old daughter dealing with her dad's very public affair. It already has nearly 200k followers. In her first clip, warming herself next to an open fire, Marina said she was 'reconnecting with life after your dad's affair makes national news'. That video alone amassed 36 million views in a few days. What followed was a steady stream of self-aware, tongue-in-cheek content, including mentions of family group chats and poking fun at rich-kid stereotypes. One video responded to a comment that read: 'I don't feel bad for rich people,' while Marina ran around on the deck of a private yacht looking carefree. A woman has claimed to be the daughter of Andy Bryon, the ex-CEO at the centre of the Coldplay kiss-cam scandal. Picture: TikTok/thatmarinagirll Others showed screenshots of text exchanges between her and her friends, where they discussed the news. 'I thought it was your dad's doppelganger,' one of the friends says. Marina replies: 'I saw it early this morning … Lord help us'. In another, Marina claims to be texting her mum, who is allegedly processing the news by doing breathwork and manifestation. By the fourth video, the account was promoting a company called Triips, a discount travel website. 'Thanks for the $35 flight, I'm basically healed,' the caption read. She made several videos over the weekend claiming to be dealing with her father's alleged affair. Picture: TikTok/thatmarinagirll The videos were flooded with comments, split into three clear groups. Some offered sympathy, others criticised her for 'capitalising' on her dad's cheating scandal, and some simply didn't believe any of it was real. 'This is honestly iconic. Making lemonade out of lemons,' said one. 'I'm so sorry that happened to you, your mum and family. Infidelity is traumatising for the whole family,' another commented. 'I hope you are healing in any way you can from all of this,' said a third. The account amassed nearly 200k followers in just a few days. Picture: TikTok/thatmarinagirll But not everyone was buying it. 'Trying to go viral off your dad's affair is absolutely insane,' one blunt comment read. 'Wow, imagine using your dad's affair to get famous,' said someone else. Then, scepticism began to surface. 'She isn't his child, y'all,' claimed one. 'It's giving ad,' wrote another. 'Impostor check,' added a third. One account, LizTheMillennial, even created a video claiming the account was fake and that the profile was banning any comments that attempted to share the truth. But people quickly began to grow sceptical of the account. Picture: TikTok/LizTheMillennial So, does Andy Bryon have a daughter? According to public records, Andy Bryon doesn't have a daughter. Bryon and his wife Megan Kerrigan have two sons. There's no mention of a daughter named Marina Bryon. Up until the cheating scandal went viral, Kerrigan was posting happy family photos on Facebook, including their two sons. It appears that the CEO doesn't actually have a daughter, just two sons. Picture: Facebook/MeganKerrigan Bryon's wife, Megan Kerrigan posted happy snaps of the family of four to Facebook, before the alleged affair went public. Facebook/MeganKerrigan Meanwhile, Elon Musk's xAI's bot Grok also fact-checked the claims on social media. 'Based on extensive review … there is no credible evidence of anyone named Marina being Andy Byron's daughter. Confirmed: He and his wife have two sons only. This claim seems baseless or mistaken,' Grok wrote on X. Kerrigan hasn't made any formal comment about the scandal, but reportedly removed her married name from her Facebook last week and has since deleted her account. No one in the family has publicly commented on the incident. Picture: Supplied Adding yet another twist, the videos on the Marina Bryon account were allegedly taken from the social media of a French model and singer-songwriter, Julie Tuzet. Tuzet came forward over the weekend to clear her name. 'Guys, I am not the CEO's daughter. You probably saw this video of me at a fireplace reconnecting with nature. It's just someone who stole my videos and content from TikTok to create this fake news, and it's going viral,' she said in her own TikTok. The real woman in the video made a TikTok claiming the account was impersonating her, and she wasn't the CEO's daughter. Picture: TikTok/julietuzet She is a model and singer-songwriter and says her videos often get stolen online. Picture: TikTok/julietuzet 'Please help me report that person because she blocked me, so I can't report it. I also can't comment anything because she is checking each comment so they don't tag my real account. 'But stay safe, don't believe everything you see on the internet, and help me spread this news because it's wild.' Once the alleged hoax was revealed, many viewers admitted to falling for it. 'Damn, I fell for it, thanks for the truth,' said one comment. 'Makes you really sit down and think what else is fake,' another mused. Another said they felt like they 'got played'. has reached out to ThatMarinaGirll, Julie Tuzet and Triips for comment. Originally published as Coldplay CEO's 'daughter' responds to scandal

Faith Ward: Perth dancer on becoming a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, selection process and Texas life

Perth dancer Faith Ward is still coming to terms with the surreal feeling of becoming an official Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. 'My whole world has done a 360, it's honestly insane,' she said. The 22-year-old, known as Flexi Faith, was picked alongside six other rookies to join 30 veterans, where they will represent the NFL's Dallas Cowboys team on the sidelines in their iconic blue and white star-spangled uniforms. Ward said she thinks the news will finally sink in when she gets to wear her uniform for official photos on Tuesday. 'I'm just so incredibly grateful to be in this position and feeling like everything that I've done and trained for is paid off,' she said. 'It feels a little bit like a dream, if I'm being 100 per cent honest, and I'm just so excited.' Ward is the first New Zealander to join the team and the third Australian, following in the footsteps of former members Angela Nicotera Brown and Jinelle Esther. 'I honestly feel like I'm doing my country so proud, and it's just so cool, because I know that in New Zealand, we don't really get a lot of opportunity, and we have to really venture out to make ourselves be seen and heard,' she said. 'It's really nice to represent both of my places where I've grown up, but I'll always be a true Kiwi at heart.' Ward danced for her life during a rigorous selection process led by team director Kelli Finglass and choreographer Judy Trammel. The intense method of cutting the team to 36 has become more well-known thanks to the Netflix series America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, which gives a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to make the squad. Ward was competing against American women who had grown up dancing in the 'power pom' collegiate cheerleading style, a challenging genre for someone who doesn't come from that dance background. Fans of the Netflix show may get an insight into Ward's DCC journey if the series is renewed for a third season. 'The first lesson, when I came in, I'm sure you guys will eventually see, I'm a deer in headlights. Going into an environment where I'd never done the style before, never held a pair of pom poms, and didn't know any of the routines, while all the veterans around you know what they're doing, is extremely intimidating. 'Plus, you're literally fighting for your life in front of Judy and Kelli. Part of the process sees the rookies and veterans take part in a month-long training camp where they practise choreography from game day dances. 'Training camp is probably one of the hardest experiences of your life, and you are seriously pushed to limits that you didn't even think were possible,' she said. 'I think every athlete needs to go through something like that, because the process just makes you grow so much as a person, mentally and physically. 'But I'm not going to lie to you, definitely one of the hardest experiences.' Ward thanked her dance teachers and said she wouldn't have achieved her dream without them. She specifically thanked them for being strict, which has helped her navigate the reality of the 'brutal' professional dancing world. As Ward settles into life in Texas, she said she has a lot to learn about the American way of life, including the road rules. 'Everything is the opposite...I've been loving trying all the American food,' she said. The cheerleaders are now preparing for the first home preseason game for the Cowboys, scheduled for August 17. The season officially kicks off at their home turf in Arlington, Texas on September 15.
