IBM and The Hindu launch 'AI@Work' to accelerate enterprise
In a significant push toward digital transformation, The Hindu Group, in collaboration with IBM, has launched AI@Work – Shaping the Future of Business with AI, a year-long initiative designed to spotlight the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in reshaping Indian industries.
The initiative positions AI not as an emerging technology but as a core enabler of innovation, efficiency, and sectoral reinvention. Focusing on Manufacturing and Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI), AI@Work will present real-world examples of AI-driven change and explore the transition from '+AI' – where AI is added to legacy systems – to 'AI+', where AI is embedded into the heart of business processes.
'Data is your most powerful asset, but only when harnessed effectively,' said Tuhina Pandey, Director – APAC Communications & CMO, India and South Asia, IBM. 'With 99% of enterprise data untouched by AI, there's a massive opportunity for Indian businesses to unlock value, especially through unstructured data. Our partnership with The Hindu aims to turn this untapped potential into real-world progress.'
A key highlight of the campaign is the use of IBM's advanced AI and data platform, WatsonX, which has already been deployed internally at IBM to improve efficiency and redirect cost savings into innovation. As 'Client Zero,' IBM not only advocates for but actively demonstrates responsible, scalable AI adoption.
AI@Work will roll out through a dynamic content series comprising expert roundtables, panel discussions, and sector-specific company profiles. The initiative will delve deep into how AI is influencing decision-making, transforming workflows, and reshaping leadership approaches across enterprises.
The campaign will culminate in a comprehensive e-book featuring actionable insights, strategic frameworks, and sector-specific roadmaps for Indian enterprises looking to scale AI adoption responsibly.
Suresh Balakrishna, Chief Revenue Officer, The Hindu Group, emphasized, 'This initiative uniquely merges The Hindu's editorial integrity with IBM's technological leadership. It will foster industry-centric dialogue on AI's role in shaping India's business and social landscape.'

Soon FASTag may be used to buy insurance, pay challans
NEW DELHI: You may soon be able to use your vehicle's FASTag to pay traffic challans, parking fee, insurance premium and for EV charging, in addition to highway tolls. With nearly 11 crore FASTags issued by banks, the govt is exploring ways to expand its use as a flexible payment tool. To take this forward and firm up the next phase of FASTag growth, the road transport and highways ministry and the NHAI on Wednesday held a brainstorming workshop with top officials from the finance ministry and fintech firms. Road transport minister Nitin Gadkari said through collaboration with fintechs and other stakeholders, the govt aims at expanding the utility of FASTag into a robust platform that will 'enhance user convenience, streamline transport and mobility services'. Sources said road transport secretary V Umashankar said while FASTag has largely introduced manless tolling and eliminate barriers this can be used for other purposes linked to vehicles, such as paying for fuel, insurance premium and traffic challan, as the govt has enforced the 'one vehicle, one tag' rule. On the prospect of allowing insurance companies to issue FASTag to increase coverage of insured vehicles from 50% to 75%-90% in three years, the secretary said this is possible but there is a need to cleaning the 'Vahan' database, which has around 7.5 crore inactive vehicles. Middle East conflict: Flights resume, passengers relieved as airlines restore operations
AFTER THE disruption caused by the escalating conflict in the Middle East, major Indian airlines have begun resuming flights from Wednesday, offering relief to hundreds of affected travellers. Carriers including Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet had earlier suspended or rerouted services as a safety measure, but with conditions gradually stabilising, operations are being cautiously restored. Apoorva, an Air India official, said the suspensions were necessary due to security concerns linked to the conflict. 'With the situation now stabilising, we have resumed operations on certain routes. Passenger communication, rebooking, and refunds are being handled as per protocol,' the official said. SpiceJet spokesperson said, 'Flight operations to the Middle East have now returned to normal. We're operating smoothly and even resumed our flights from the 25th.' Dr Santosh, a passenger who was scheduled to fly from Ahmedabad to London on Air India flight AI 159, shared his experience, 'I was supposed to fly on Tuesday morning at 5:30, but due to the situation in the Middle East, our flight got cancelled. It was stressful because I thought I would miss important business work in London. Now that the flights have resumed, I feel a huge sense of relief. I'm thankful that operations are slowly returning to normal.' Among the routes affected earlier this week were Pune-Singapore and Bengaluru-Singapore, both of which were temporarily suspended by Air India until at least July 15. The airline had also halted its Mumbai-Bagdogra route and reduced frequencies on 19 other major domestic and short-haul international routes. Routes such as Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Kolkata, and Delhi-Goa saw temporary frequency cuts. Despite the cuts, Air India continued operating nearly 600 daily flights and had assured passengers that it was working proactively to offer re-accommodation, complimentary rescheduling, or full refunds. With the easing of tension in some regions, the airline has now begun restoring schedules in a phased manner. IndiGo, which had suspended flights to and from over a dozen Middle Eastern cities including Dubai, Doha, Kuwait, and Jeddah, also resumed select services on Wednesday. The airline continues to assess the situation closely in coordination with aviation authorities and is gradually reactivating affected routes where safe. Meanwhile, in a stark reminder of the seriousness of the situation, a Dubai-bound SpiceJet flight from Pune was forced to return mid-air early Monday morning. Flight SG-51 had taken off from Pune International Airport around 9:54 pm but returned shortly after crossing Indian airspace due to the escalating conflict in the region. While the airspace over conflict-affected zones remains under watch, Indian carriers have reiterated that passenger safety remains their top priority. Flyers are advised to check real-time updates via airline websites or apps and ensure their contact details are updated for timely alerts. With phased resumptions now underway, airlines are cautiously optimistic about returning to full operations, provided the geopolitical environment continues to stabilise.

Netherlands-based firm Prosus sees IPO upside in India as portfolio matures
Dutch investment firm Prosus is managing $6.5 billion in assets across more than 30 Indian companies and has returned around $4 billion to shareholders, said Ashutosh Sharma, head of India investments, at the company's Capital Markets Day in London. Sharma described the firm's India portfolio as 'loosely coupled,' allowing its companies to leverage shared insights and infrastructure while maintaining operational independence. These are spanning across food delivery, e-commerce, payments, and experiences. Several of these companies, he noted, are nearing public-market readiness — a development expected to boost returns in the near term. Urban Company, which filed draft initial public offer (IPO) papers in April, is among the portfolio's more mature firms and is expected to go public later this year. Jewellery retailer BlueStone has also secured regulatory approval and is preparing for an imminent listing. Prosus has invested more than $8.6 billion in India, positioning the country as a key strategic market. The firm's portfolio includes Swiggy, Meesho, Byju's, Captain Fresh, and Urban Company, with Swiggy having a standout IPO last year. Prosus has also recently invested in Rapido, a fast-growing ride-hailing platform that now facilitates over 3 million rides daily and is expanding at more than 100 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y). Liquidity events from companies like MakeMyTrip, Swiggy, and Flipkart have generated significant returns. From Swiggy's IPO in November 2024, Prosus realised about $500 million from a cumulative $1.3 billion investment. The firm retains a 25 per cent stake in the company, which is currently valued at around $2.7 billion. Quick commerce At the event, Swiggy CEO Harsha Majety emphasised that its quick commerce business has surpassed food delivery in size and continues to redefine Indian online retail. The category, which started as a convenience solution, now includes 30,000–40,000 stock keeping units (SKUs) and is driving daily user behaviour across product categories like home goods and personal care. Swiggy's food delivery arm has reached profitability and aims to serve 100 million users 15 times a month. Majety pointed out that India is still early in its restaurant evolution. Also, mobility platform Rapido recently began piloting a food delivery service in Bengaluru. When asked about Rapido's foray into this segment, Majesty said 'It is not easy to just get an opening that you can go take a home run with. I think it will be interesting to see if there's an alternative take to food delivery that can grow the category, because we are waiting for some more growth as well.' He added, 'We are definitely super agile and paranoid. If we see a new opening, we are going to be all over it.' He said that there were a dozen players in food delivery in 2015. A year later Uber and Ola threw their hat into the ring. 'Then, in 2019, Amazon threw its hat into the ring. In 2021, there was the entry of ONDC,' said Majety. 'I think we do a pretty good job of serving the consumer.' Analysts expect limited disruption to India's entrenched food delivery giants. According to a recent report by Bernstein, the market remains a tight duopoly, with Zomato holding nearly 54 per cent share and rival Swiggy is at 46 per cent. While Swiggy has shown stronger Y-o-Y growth in gross order value (GOV), the US-based asset manager does not foresee Rapido's entry shifting the balance in the near term.
