OPS keeps options open for alliance, asks followers to expose BJP, DMK
CHENNAI: Keeping his options open for alliance for facing 2026 election, former chief minister O Panneerselvam on Sunday directed his followers not to speculate about alliance. However, OPS asked his followers to expose the 'anti-Tamil Nadu activities of the central government' as well as the problems faced by the people from the DMK government. This statement of Panneerselvam indicates that he is weighing his options for the poll alliance. A few days ago, after holding discussions with Chief Minister M K Stalin for about 30 minutes, he triggered speculations about aligning with the DMK with his remarks: 'There are no permanent foes or friends in politics. That has been the history. When the elections approach, anything can happen.' In a statement, Panneerselvam said after the demise of former CM J Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK has been losing its credibility among the people, facing recurring defeats at the hustings. 'We have been struggling to retrieve the AIADMK from a 'group of betrayers' by establishing the AIADMK Cadres' Rights Retrieval Committee with the hope to win the cases pending before the courts,' he added. Panneerselvam directed his supporters to organise public meetings to expose the 'anti-Tamil Nadu activities of the centre' and the problems faced by the people from the current regime in the state, besides how the AIADMK is being led on a destructive path. However, he did not name Edappadi K Palaniswami. Meanwhile, AMMK general secretary T T V Dhinakaran on Sunday told the media that the national leaders of the BJP in New Delhi should make efforts to bring Panneerselvam back into the NDA-fold. Dhinakaran also said Panneerselvam should withdraw his decision to leave the NDA. Talking to reporters in Chennai and Madurai, Panneerselvam showed the messages he sent to BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran about his wish to meet PM Narendra Modi, who visited Tamil Nadu recently. Already, Nagenthran had said that he indeed approached Panneerselvam a day ahead of the PM's visit to TN, but the latter could not be reached. TTV bats for OPS AMMK general secretary TTV Dhinakaran said BJP's national leaders in Delhi should make efforts to bring Panneerselvam back into the NDA. Dhinakaran also said Panneerselvam should withdraw his decision to leave the alliance

'Yeh Dosti Hum Nahin Todenge': Why PM Modi Won't Stop Being Friends With Putin As Trump Fumes
Last Updated: India's NSA Ajit Doval and foreign minister S Jaishankar might visit Russia this month, which is likely to further irritate US President Donald Trump 'Yeh dosti hum nahin todenge …' – this Bollywood classic is a perfect description of the relationship between Narendra Modi and Vladimir Putin. While Donald Trump may be displeased with this friendship, Modi is firm in his stance – India will not sever ties with its most reliable ally to foster a friendship with one of the world's most powerful men. 'They (India) are Russia's largest energy buyer, along with China, at a time when the world wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine," Trump said, threatening India with an unspecified 'penalty" for its dealings with Russia. Recently, there was news that Indian firms had ceased buying Russian oil. Trump quickly praised this as a positive step. But India soon clarified that this was not the case – Indian oil refiners are still sourcing oil from Russian suppliers. Although supplies have slightly decreased in July, these decisions are influenced by factors such as price, crude grade, inventories, logistics, and other economic considerations. Clearly, the India-Russia relationship is here to stay. Officially, the Centre has stated that India and Russia have a steady and time-tested partnership. 'Our bilateral relationships with various countries stand on their own merit and should not be seen from the prism of a third country," the foreign ministry said, indirectly addressing the US. These strong words underscore the India-Russia friendship. Russian President Vladimir Putin is also set to visit India in the coming months, marking his first tour since 2021. Clearly, India is committed to maintaining its friendship with Russia much to Trump's frustration. TRADE DEAL STANDOFF Trump is also upset for another reason – the stalled trade deal. Modi has stood firm against him, refusing trade concessions and not yielding to pressure. This is despite the imposition of a 25 percent tariff on Indian imports starting August 7. India's message to Trump is clear: India-US relations have withstood numerous challenges and transitions. Delhi is not backing down. Top government sources said there will be no concessions on agriculture, no opening dairy to American firms, and a refusal of genetically modified crops or beef-based dairy. For India, farmers' interests are paramount. This is also a significant voter base. The government recalls the repeal of the three farm laws after massive protests in 2021. India is prepared to absorb the 0.2 percent GDP loss resulting from the 25 percent tariff, viewing it as manageable and minimal. India will patiently wait for the signing of a mini-deal by September or October. Until then, the focus is on standing firm and not compromising core interests for a few billion dollars. A local Samajwadi Party leader was booked in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur for allegedly teaching children 'politicised alphabet" in a 'PDA Pathshala", officials said. According to SP City Vyom Bindal, a complaint was filed by a resident of the Kallarpur Gurjar village – Main Singh – who alleged that SP leader Farhad Alam Gada taught children 'A for Akhilesh", 'B for Babasaheb", 'D for Dimple", and 'M for Mulayam Singh Yadav". The complainant described the lessons as 'politicised alphabets" at a 'PDA Pathshala". The incident came to the fore after a purported video of the class, which was recorded at Gada's home in Ramnagar, was posted on social media and went viral. The children appearing in the video were from a private school and were seen in their uniforms. पढ़ाई के लिए तो FIR अंग्रेजों तक ने नहीं की थी।भाजपा का शिक्षा विरोधी चेहरा अब जनता के सामने उजागर हो गया है। अब भाजपा हमेशा के लिए जाएगी। निंदनीय! — Akhilesh Yadav (@yadavakhilesh) August 3, 2025 Reacting to the development, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav posted on X, 'Even the British did not file an FIR for studying. The anti-education face of the BJP has now been exposed to the public. Now the BJP will be gone forever. Condemnable." In his defence, Farhad Gada had earlier said that the 'PDA Pathshala" was not just for teaching the basics like the ABCs but also to educate children about the 'great figures of Samajwadi ideology."
