Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado go yard in 4-3 win for Padres

For the first time in recent memory, the big bats for the San Diego Padres made some noise — on the same night. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado each homered, and Xander Bogaerts added an RBI-double to lead the Padres to a 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park, Thursday night.
The Diamondbacks scored two runs in the top of the third inning off Padres starter Randy Vasquez to take a 2-0 lead to end the top of the inning. San Diego wasted no time in offering a response in the bottom half of the inning.

Tatis Jr. led off the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run to center field that cut the lead to 2-1. San Diego was not able to get any additional runs in the frame, but the home run from Tatis Jr. provided a much needed sign of life for the Padres offense.
San Diego was able to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Jake Cronenworth RBI-groundout. Jackson Merrill walked to start the inning and he advanced to third on a Jose Iglesias single. Cronenworth followed with a groundout to first base, which allowed Merrill to score and pushed Iglesias to second where he stayed until the inning ended.
The Padres jumped ahead of the Diamondbacks in the bottom of the fifth inning when Machado launched a solo home run deep into the left field stands to lead off the inning, putting San Diego up, 3-2.
The Padres added a second run in the inning when Gavin Sheets hit a single to right. He came in to score to give San Diego a 4-2 lead when Bogaerts hit a double to left field. Bogaerts would eventually reach third base, but was unable to score.

Arizona did not go away quietly. The Diamondbacks added a run in the top of the seventh inning and threatened for more, but Jason Adam was able to work out of trouble, keeping the Padres in front, 4-3.
San Diego was poised to respond to the Arizona run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sheets walked and moved to second on a Bogaerts sacrifice bunt. Merrill walked and Iglesias singled to load the bases with one out. Cronenworth struck out for the second out of the inning and Trenton Brooks was called on to pinch-hit for Martin Maldonado. Brooks grounded into a fielder's choice with a ground ball to short, keeping the Padres from adding to their lead.
Jeremiah Estrada bailed out Elias Diaz in the top of the eighth. With two outs and a man on for Arizona, the runner at first, Blaze Alexander, stole second base. Diaz threw down to second and the ball sailed beyond the reach of Bogaerts and into center field. Alexander moved to third on the error. Corbin Carroll took the next pitch at the top of the zone on a 2-2 pitch and struck out looking, leaving Alexander at third.
San Diego's All-Star closer Robert Suarez came on for the save in the top of the ninth inning. He earned his MLB leading 27th save with a clean inning, facing just three hitters to seal the win for the Padres.

Golden State Warriors remain short-handed after three weeks of NBA free agency

The Golden State Warriors only have nine players under contract heading into the 2025-26 NBA season. There's been no movement from the franchise during the opening three weeks of NBA free agency. Rumors linking the Warriors to Al Horford and a return for De'Anthony Melton are yet to materialize. Furthermore, Golden State's negotiations with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga appear to have reached a stalemate. As such, the Warriors are in a difficult spot as we approach the dead point in the summer. Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Joe Lacob will both understand the need to get the ball rolling on some potential additions to the roster. After all, Steve Kerr will want a full team ready for when tranining camp and preseason begins later this year. In a recent episode of ESPN's NBA Today, cap expert Bobby Marks explained the uphill battle the Warriors currently face, and why it's important for the franchise to start gaining traction on some roster additions in the coming weeks. GENESIS, U.S. SOCCER FOUNDATION, AND MLS PLAYERS ASSOCIATION OPEN TWO NEW MINI-PITCHES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

COMPTON, Calif., July 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Genesis, U.S. Soccer Foundation, and MLS Players Association (MLSPA) joined the community to open two new mini-pitches at Barack Obama Charter School, part of Ingenium Schools charter network, in Compton, California. Expanding on the Musco Mini-Pitch Systems™ in Hollywood, Florida and Staten Island, New York, this project marks the third installation through the continued partnership between Genesis and U.S. Soccer Foundation. "Genesis is committed to supporting youth and strengthening the communities we call home," said Brandon Ramirez, director, corporate social responsibility, Genesis Motor America. "By bringing these mini-pitches to Southern California, we're helping create a safe space where children can stay active, dream big, and build a brighter future together." To celebrate the grand opening, children and coaches took part in a ceremonial first kick and inaugural scrimmage on the new mini-pitches. In addition to playing games and enjoying food from local vendors with their families, participants received commemorative jerseys to mark the special occasion. "We have deep roots in the Los Angeles community, and we're excited to build on that foundation by opening two new mini-pitches with Genesis and MLSPA," said Ed Foster-Simeon, president and CEO, U.S. Soccer Foundation. "These spaces will not only increase access to the game, but also create more opportunities for young people to connect with peers and mentors, stay active, and engage with their community." The Musco Mini-Pitch System includes a customized, hard-court surface suited for soccer programs and pick-up games that serve as community hubs, encourage physical activity, and provide more opportunities for play. This mini-pitch is part of U.S. Soccer Foundation's Safe Places to Play program, which has already installed more than 800 mini-pitches across the country and aims to reach 1,000 by 2026. According to U.S. Soccer Foundation's mini-pitch study, approximately 70% of mini-pitches are in areas with high population density and low childhood opportunity, reaching an average of 10,000 children per site. "It's great to be a part of bringing these mini-pitches to the Los Angeles area, which is also home to two MLS teams," said Clarence Goodson, player relations manager, MLSPA.
