BJD MPs protest in Parliament over ‘rising' crimes against women, children in Odisha
Carrying placards that read 'Mahilaon ki cheekh aur sarkar ki khamoshi' (the cries of women and the silence of the government) and 'Odisha BJP ka shaasan, apradhiyo ki shaan' (BJP's rule in Odisha, a pride for criminals), the members demanded immediate central intervention and a judicial inquiry into the recent 'horrific' incidents.
Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra said, 'Women and children in Odisha today are completely unprotected. The law and order situation is collapsing.' Citing the incident involving a student of FM College in Balasore, who died after self-immolating when her pleas for justice went unheard, Patra said, 'She approached everyone, including the chief minister, but got no justice.' 'And now in Puri, another young girl was doused in petrol by miscreants and is battling for life at AIIMS Delhi,' he told PTI Videos.
He accused the BJP-led Odisha government of being a 'complete failure' and calling its stance on the issues 'convenient and full of double standards.' Patra said the BJD demands a judicial inquiry into both incidents and 'strict action against the miscreants.' BJD MP Muzibulla Khan had similar concerns. He said the BJP raised the slogan of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' to come to power, but it is 'failing to protect our daughters'.
Subhasish Khuntia, another BJD MP, said crimes against women and students are continuing 'unabated' under the 'double engine government' in Odisha.
'There is no safety for women under the BJP rule,' he said.

Synopsis Panun Kashmir has criticised the Indian government for not acknowledging the "genocidal objectives" of terrorism and for its reluctance to designate Pakistan as a terrorist state, asserting that this approach endangers future security operations in Jammu and Kashmir. Agencies Representative Image Panun Kashmir, an organisation advocating the cause of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, on Monday accused the central government of shirking from recognising the genocidal objectives of terrorism and avoiding the designation of Pakistan as a terrorist state. They said this would certainly jeopardise future security operations in Jammu and Kashmir. The outfit appealed to the GoI to recognise that this genocidal war is still ongoing and spilling over into the rest of India. "The GoI has once again shirked from recognising the genocidal objectives of jihadi terrorism and avoided recognising Pakistan as a terrorist state. It is extremely unfortunate and will certainly lead to jeopardising future security operations, even those based on the New Normal enunciated by the GoI," Panun Kashmir Chairman Dr. Ajay Chrungoo told reporters here. He said that while communicating with utmost regard and appreciation for the way the defence forces of the nation successfully conducted Operation Sindoor, Panun Kashmir feels it is its utmost responsibility to call upon the government to recognise Pakistan as a terrorist state. "The New Normal enunciated by the GoI after the Pahalgam massacre should have been based on the outright and unambiguous recognition of genocide as the prime objective of the terrorist violence in Jammu and Kashmir," he said that instead of calling it genocide, the GoI described the objective of terrorist violence in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the Pahalgam massacre, as a disruption of Hindu-Muslim unity - an interpretation that, he claimed, undermines the motivations behind terrorist operations in the region. Chrungoo said the Pahalgam killings, along with the massacres perpetrated at Dangri, Shiv Khori, Baltal, and the selective killings of Hindus in Kashmir, led to the complete religious cleansing of a few thousand Hindus during the BJP's rule. "It does not merely represent gruesome violence with hidden objectives. These acts unambiguously constitute an unabated genocidal campaign. They represent the same genocidal assault that was earlier perpetrated on Hindus in Kashmir, which led to their religious cleansing," he said. He added that the failure to recognise terrorist violence as genocidal appears to be driven by the same intellectual subversion that has long sought to secularise and normalise terrorism in India. "The GoI, both during BJP and Congress rule, has been driven by the same perspective of not recognising the ideological objectives of terrorism and separatism in Jammu and Kashmir," he said."Even after the Pahalgam massacre and Operation Sindoor, the GoI continues to follow a policy of genocide denial. It continues to be driven by a vision that treats Pakistan as both a rogue state and a normal state at the same time," he added. The GoI acknowledges that it is the Pakistani army that creates and perpetuates terrorism, yet time and again states that its fight is against terrorists and not against the Pakistani army or state, he said. "The New Normal should bring new hope. However, as things stand, the New Normal appears to be the old abnormality in new clothes," he said.

KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress on Monday launched a scathing attack on BJP after Amit Malviya, the national convenor of the party's IT cell, said that there is no language called 'Bengali'. A day before, on Sunday, the Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came down heavily on the BJP-led Centre after Delhi Police described Bengali as 'Bangladeshi' language in one of its written communications. Referring to a letter from Inspector Amit Dutt of Lodhi Colony police station in New Delhi to the officer-in-charge of Banga Bhawan of the West Bengal Government where he called Bengali the language of Bangladeshis, Banerjee had posted on X, 'See now how Delhi police under the direct control of Ministry of Home, Government of India is describing Bengali as "Bangladeshi" language! Bengali, our mother tongue, the language of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda, the language in which our National Anthem and the National Song (the latter by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay) are written, the language in which crores of Indians speak and write, the language which is sanctified and recognised by the Constitution of India, is now described as a Bangladeshi language!!'

Kamal Haasan's statement on Sanatana Dharma sparks controversy, says ‘Only education can break the chains of Sanatanam'
Actor, Rajya Sabha MP and founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), Kamal Haasan, has landed in a political row for his remark against Sanatana Dharma at an event in Chennai on Sunday (August 3, 2025), facing backlash from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members and Sanatana Dharma supporters on social media. On Sunday, Kamal participated in the 15th anniversary celebrations of Agaram Foundation, actor Suriya's charitable organisation that has helped over 6,700 first-generation graduates realise their dream of higher education. While speaking at the event, Kamal praised Suriya's efforts and urged youngsters to wield education as their weapon. 'Education and love are seldom provided together. Mothers give you that, and institutions like the Agaram Foundation give you that. They give you a crown if you reach greater heights in cinema, but if you want to reach great heights to do good for society, all you will get is a crown made of thorns. To say 'It's okay if that's the crown I'd be bestowed with' needs a lot of mental strength. It needs courage because nobody will stand with you,' said Kamal. On NEET, Sanatana Dharma The Thug Life actor then criticised the Union government's National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), the entrance examination for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education that has drawn flak, especially in Tamil Nadu, since its inception in 2017. 'The doctors you saw on stage today....I am not sure if they can show another batch of doctors like this at their next event. Because they haven't been able to continue such efforts post-2017. Now, do you understand why we have been opposing NEET? Since 2017, this law has prevented such children from getting this education. Agaram cannot do anything about it,' said Kamal, adding that only education can grant the power to change this situation. 'In this war, only education has the power to change the nation. It's the only weapon that can break the chains of dictatorship and Sanatana. Do not take any other weapon in your hands. You can't win with any other weapon. Because you will be defeated by majoritarianism; ignorant majoritarians will defeat you,' added Kamal. Further, he revealed that he had spoken to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin about Suriya's work and that he urged him to support such NGOs. 'I told him, 'They are not asking for money, they are merely asking for permission. How is that going to hurt us? Please give them the necessary permissions' He said he has been doing so.' Kamal's statement against Sanatana Dharma has garnered criticism, especially from the BJP. Sanatana Dharma, a set of eternal duties ordained in Hinduism, has been a sensitive nerve in politics. Earlier in 2023, Tamil Nadu Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Udhayanidhi Stalin's statement calling for 'the eradication of Sanatana Dharma' triggered a major political row. Reacting to his comment, BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan, on Monday, accused Kamal of 'dividing people' on religious sentiments. 'Kamal Haasan is more thankful to DMK than its own cadres. If he speaks about Sanatan, Udhayanidhi and Stalin will be happy. However, Tamil Nadu people will be unhappy, and not only Tamil Nadu, the sentiments of all Indians who follow that ideology will be hurt,' she told the news agency ANI. This isn't the first time a statement by Kamal Haasan has created a controversy in recent times. Earlier in June, the actor was embroiled in a controversy during the promotions of his film Thug Lifefor stating that the Kannada language 'was born out of Tamil.' The remark, made during the audio launch of his upcoming film Thug Life in Chennai, has drawn fierce backlash in Karnataka, particularly from the BJP and pro-Kannada groups. The controversy even led to a halt in the film's release in Karnataka, a ban that was revoked after the Supreme Court of India asserted filmmakers' right to release certified films without threats of arson or mob intimidation.
