Threads reaches 400 million monthly users in its quest to best X (formerly Twitter)

However, early user engagement dipped quite a bit soon after launch. However, steady progress followed: 175 million MAUs by mid-2024, 300 million by December 2024, and 350 million by April 2025.
While Threads has made significant gains, it still trails behind X (formerly Twitter), which has an estimated 600 million monthly active users. X's broader user base, entrenched communities, and long-standing influence still give it an edge. However, mobile usage figures show Threads is narrowing the gap. Meta has also leaned heavily on its integration with Instagram, which allows users to carry over their existing friends — a clear advantage in growing adoption quickly.
The rivalry between Threads and X has intensified over the past two years. X, under Elon Musk's ownership, has made controversial changes such as paywalled features and looser content moderation, which some argue have driven users to explore alternatives. Threads has attempted to capitalize on this by positioning itself as a calmer, more curated space for conversation. Still, critics point out that it must find its own voice to avoid simply being seen as "Instagram with text."
Meanwhile, competitors like Bluesky also entered the picture. Backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, Bluesky emphasizes decentralization and user control, using the AT Protocol to allow people to move their accounts between platforms. Though its user base is far smaller — estimated at just over 10 million — it's gaining traction among users who want independence from large corporate-owned networks. Other niche platforms, like Mastodon, continue to attract smaller but loyal communities.
Hitting 400 million users is a major milestone, but this number is only part of the story. Retention, user satisfaction, and a distinct platform identity will matter more than raw sign-up figures. Threads has the resources and reach to keep growing, but whether it can hold its place in a crowded, shifting social media landscape is the real test.

Google Messages is slowly taking over Samsung and Pixel users' screens
A new Google Messages bug has popped up, and while it's mostly harmless, it's kind of bug has replicated the Google Messages icon, so there are now two app icons in the app launcher's suggestions and app drawer. The two icons are located next to each other, and either one of them can be used to launch the application. Interestingly, the app icon doesn't appear twice on the home screens and in search problem affects the Google Messages beta version 20250811_03_RC00 and has shown up on Pixel and Samsung devices. The code sleuths over at Android Authority dug deep into the problem and found out what was happening. Apparently, this is a result of duplicate declarations by Google, tricking the system into thinking that there are two apps to display, even though both icons open Google Messages. Google will likely eradicate the bug with the next update, but for those who don't like a cluttered interface and are very particular about how their app drawers look, it's surely a the downside of enrolling in beta programs, though, and usually, people who sign up for them are used to problems like you can't stand it, you may want to revert to the stable version of the Google Messages app. Google regularly ships new features to its messaging app, and the updates sometimes introduce bugs. For instance, earlier this month, the beta version was plagued with a bug that caused it to crash. Like we said, this is a part of the beta experience, and if you want more stability, the beta program might not be for you.

HTC Vive Eagle announced with 12MP camera, AI translation and 36-hour battery life
HTC made a big bet on VR years ago when it launched its Vive series headsets, and the maker is now entering a new frontier with its Vive Eagle AI glasses. These are a competitor to the Ray-Ban Meta with the goal of looking like regular glasses but simultaneously offering a FPV camera, on-device AI features and stereo speakers. HTC Vive Eagle Vive Eagle comes in several translucent colors, including Black, Berry, Coffee, and Grey. They sport a 12MP ultra-wide camera, which captures 3,024 × 4,032 px photos and 1,512 × 2,016 px video at up to 30fps. The right frame features an LED capture light, which lets others know you're recording. The glasses come with Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 paired with 4GB RAM and 32GB storage. They weigh just under 49 grams with their Zeiss lenses and offer IP54 ingress protection against water and dust. Vive Eagle supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity and pairs with any iOS 17.6+ or Android 10+ phone via the Vive Connect app. You also get open-ear stereo speakers integrated into the temples. HTC is bringing its Vive AI voice assistant, which is compatible with Google Gemini and ChatGPT (beta). You also get real-time translation with support for 13 languages and on-device conversion to spoken audio. The glasses come with a 235mAh battery. They are rated at up to 36 hours of standby, 4.5 hours of continuous music playback, and 3 hours for voice calls. When you do need to recharge, you can do so with the bundled magnetic charger. It promises a 50% charge in 10 minutes and an 80% top-up in 23 minutes. HTC Vive Eagle will retail for NTD 15,600, which is $521.
