Balasore self-immolation case: BJD's Amar Patnaik calls for
Patnaik also asked the government to probe the role of Balasore's collector and Superintendent of police (SP).
'... We are all deeply distressed and anguished. The student community in Odisha are completely shocked at this negligence and callousness. A government that refused to listen to a student begging for justice and mercy from sexual harassment by her teacher... She had approached the local MLA, local administration, MP, and the concerned minister, and finally she tweeted, tagging the CM and the education minister,' Patnaik said.
'Nobody listened to her plea for help... Heads must roll. The BJP must take action against the concerned ministers, the MP and the local political leaders whom she had gone to plead with. She belonged to ABVP. If a member of ABVP cannot be protected in a government led by the BJP, what can be more shocking? ... I wish the government would take the strictest action. The local district collector and SPs' roles must be probed. The internal complaints committee report was a sham. Their role must be investigated. A judicial inquiry and a crime branch inquiry must be initiated... If the CM has an iota of sympathy for the family of the girl, he must ask for the resignation of the education minister,' he added.
Further, expressing concern over the educational system in the state, the BJD leader said, 'The BJD has already protested... The Biju Chhatra Janata Dal and Yuva Janta Dal expressed it on the roads of Bhubaneswar. A time has come when it has to go to every campus. Educational system in our state cannot be denigrated to this extent.'
On Monday, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar confirmed the death of the 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Odisha's Balasore, who had attempted self-immolation.
The Department of Burn Centre, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said in a statement that the patient was brought to the casualty on July 12 and was referred from Balasore District Headquarters Hospital to AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
'She was admitted to the Burns Centre ICU. The patient was resuscitated with IV fluids and IV antibiotics, intubated and put on mechanical ventilation. Despite adequate resuscitation and all possible supportive management, including renal replacement therapy at the Burns ICU, she could not be revived and was declared clinically dead at 11:46 PM on July 14,' the statement said.
The 20-year-old student set herself on fire after allegedly facing prolonged sexual harassment by her college's Head of Department. Despite lodging a formal complaint and seeking help from the principal, her pleas were ignored, leading to the tragic incident. The incident occurred at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College. (ANI)

What happens in Tej Pratap's dreams?
Chirag lauds Kishor for his 'honest role' Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant kishor got an admirer from an unexpected quarter. Union Minister and LJP (RV) chief Chirag Paswan appreciated kishor's 'honest role' in Bihar politics. Paswan, who is also known as the PM's 'Hanuman', however, dismissed the allegation that Kishor was trying to 'hijack' his 'Bihar first, Bihari first' plank. Paswan said no one can hijack another's agenda. He said it's the beauty of democracy that people have many options to choose from. 'In democracy, it's better to have many options,' he quipped. Notably, Kishor misses no chance to criticize Modi for his failure to keep promises made to the people of Bihar. 'Let Tejashwi contest polls from Bangladesh' Everyone was taken by surprise when a BJP minister in the Nitish Kumar cabinet asked RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, who is also the leader of the opposition in the State Assembly, to contest elections from Bangladesh if the latter has any objection to the deletion of names of Bangladeshi infiltrators from the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision in Bihar. The minister, Nitin Nabin, took a potshot at Tejashwi's comment on the possible boycott of elections over the SIR. 'Let him contest the election from Bangladesh,' the BJP minister said. Roundtable calls for agitation against smart power meters
Vijayawada: Secretary of the CPM NTR District Committee DV Krishna criticised the implementation of Adani's smart electricity meters, labelling them 'smart bombs' for consumers. He alleged that these actions are being carried out at the behest of both Central and State governments. During a roundtable conference held here on Thursday at Balotsava Bhavan in Governorpet, Krishna expressed grave concern that smart meters would significantly increase the burden of electricity charges on consumers. He warned the government to remember that the previous TDP government collapsed under the weight of excessive electricity charges in the undivided state, predicting that 'the TDP government will inevitably fall once again due to electricity smart meters.' Krishna pointed out that people in BJP-ruled Rajasthan have rejected Maruti meters, and a similar situation has arisen in Bengal. He highlighted instances in Andhra Pradesh, specifically in Anantapuram, Gudivada, Vijayawada, and Srikakulam, where consumers have already vandalised smart meters. He condemned the authorities for proceeding with meter installation despite widespread public opposition. G Koteswara Rao, City Secretary of CPI, echoed these concerns, stating that smart meters would impose massive burdens on the public. He explained that not only would charges increase, but consumers would also have to bear the monthly cost of the smart meters themselves. Koteswara Rao ridiculed the smart meters as an experiment designed to break the backs of consumers, through additional charges beyond unit consumption, such as fuel charges, duties, 'true up' charges, and maintenance charges. Padma, a city leader of New Democracy, called for strong opposition to smart meters, urging women, as household consumers, to lead this movement. Maridu Prasad Babu, a Red Flag leader, warned that another electricity agitation is inevitable, placing the blame squarely on the TDP government. He announced that the electricity movement would intensify on August 5. The roundtable conference concluded with several key decisions including to escalate the protest by conducting meetings in mandals and towns, distribute pamphlets, collect signatures, and conduct door-to-door campaigns until July 29, organise meetings, Padayatras, promotional activities, and Prabhat Pheris (morning rallies) from July 30 to August 4 and to stage protests and demonstrations at electricity sub-stations and government offices on August 5. A Venkateswara Rao (CITU District President), NCH Srinivasa Rao (CITU General Secretary), M Srinivas (Treasurer), NCH Supraja (Anganwadi Workers Union District General Secretary), and leaders including N Nageswara Rao, Y Subbarao, KR Anjaneyulu (AITUC City President), M Sambasiva Rao (AITUC General Secretary), KV Ramana (IFTU), M Muni Shankar (IFTU), Govindarajulu (AIYF), Durga (POW), and Durgamba (AIFW) participated.

Amit Shah unveils National Cooperative Policy 2025 in Delhi
Union home minister and minister of cooperation Amit Shah on Thursday unveiled the National Cooperative Policy 2025, which he said would play a key role in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047, create large-scale livelihood opportunities, and ensure development at the grassroots level by bringing over 500 million citizens under its ambit. Union home minister Amit Shah addresses a gathering during the unveiling of the National Cooperation Policy-2025 in New Delhi on Thursday. (ANI) He explained that the mission of the policy is to promote small cooperative units that are professional, transparent, technology-enabled, accountable, economically self-reliant, and successful — and to ensure at least one cooperative unit is established in every village. Shah said that the new cooperation policy is a historic step toward fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Sahkar Se Samriddhi' (prosperity through cooperation). Shah said that at the core of the cooperation policy are villages, agriculture, rural women, Dalits, and Tribals. 'In 2002, the then government had brought in the cooperative policy for the first time. It was the BJP government under Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Today, in 2025, the new policy has also been brought by the Narendra Modi-led BJP government. PM Modi has set a goal of making India the third-largest economy in the world by 2027. India also holds responsibility of inclusive growth for 1.4 billion citizens. This is why, after 75 years of Independence, the cooperative ministry was set up by the PM,' he said during the launch of the policy. The objective of the policy is to make cooperative institutions inclusive, manage them professionally, prepare them for the future, and create large-scale employment and livelihood opportunities, especially in rural India, he said. 'By 2034, the National Cooperation Policy aims to triple the cooperative sector's contribution to GDP, bring 50 crore active members into the fold, and connect youth with employment opportunities,' he added. 'In the last four years, the cooperative sector has been at par with the corporate sector at all levels, whether it is related to priority, taxation, or developmental funds for the sector. There was a time, sometime in 2020, when many experts had said that this is a dying sector. The same people now tell me that this sector has a future,' he said, adding that only the cooperative sector has the capacity to develop the nation's economy inclusively with contributions from all 1.4 billion citizens. The policy was prepared by a 48-member national-level committee headed by former Union minister Suresh Prabhu. This committee comprised members from national/state cooperative federations, cooperative societies at all levels and sectors, representatives of the relevant central and state government ministries/departments, and academicians. Shah said that the end of 2025, there will be a remarkable start related to cooperatives in the taxi and insurance sector. 'There will be a mechanism in which the profits will directly go to the driver,' he said. Shah said that by 2047, every village will have at least one cooperative unit. He said that the ministry has used data to classify villages into different grades for implementation of the policy. This, he said, would ensure that gaps are identified and there is equal growth and development across the country. 'There can't be a situation where the cooperative sector in one state is excellent, average in another, and below par in another state. We have prepared a road map to ensure the development in the cooperative sector is equal in all states. Based on data bank, we have graded them. There will be monitoring to see what states in each sector require. How can one state strengthen the other? We are working to open cooperatives in new sectors. This policy is far sighted and results-oriented. This has been prepared keeping in mind the needs and challenges of the mid-21st century. This is a member-centric model, the growth of the member is fundamental,' he said. 'There won't be any panchayat where there is no cooperative. The cooperative societies at every level - grain, state or national - will be prepared for the challenges of the future…Cooperative societies will also be established in sectors like tourism, taxi services, insurance, and green energy through the National Cooperation Policy,' he said adding that the government under the new policy has key objective of having a 30% increase in the number of cooperative societies and the establishment of at least one cooperative society in every village.
