The suspects, aged 40, 28 and 31, were detained in separate police raids after being identified in the incident that resulted in losses totalling RM11, 000. Sarawak Customs seizes RM11.88 million in contraband cigarettes

KUCHING: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department Sarawak branch has seized undeclared cigarettes with a total value estimated at RM11,880,000. This figure includes both the goods' value and the tax evaded. The raid occurred at a warehouse in Demak Industrial Park last month. Director Norizan Yahya confirmed the operation's details. A team from the Land Operations Unit and the headquarters' intelligence branch conducted the raid on July 29 at about 4 pm. They also arrested a man in his 50s believed to be the warehouse manager. 'An inspection revealed various brands of cigarettes believed to have been brought in from Indonesia as prohibited goods stored in the premises,' he stated. 'The seizure was estimated at RM3.6 million while total duty and tax was RM8.28 million, making the total seizure worth RM11.88 million,' he said at a press conference. He clarified the legal status of the goods. Cigarettes are categorised as prohibited goods under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023. Their importation requires a specific permit. He detailed the syndicate's method of operation. Their modus operandi was to conceal contraband in premises storing licenced goods. The prohibited goods were then transported elsewhere for distribution. The investigation is being conducted under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. This section pertains to concealing uncustomed goods. If convicted, offenders face a fine not exceeding RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, or both penalties. - Bernama

Object that exploded in Polish field could be drone or sabotage-related, defence minister says

(Corrects time to around 2100 GMT in paragraph 6) WARSAW (Reuters) -An object which fell and exploded in a cornfield in eastern Poland may have been a component of an old propeller engine, the Polish army said on Wednesday, adding that there had been no violation of Poland's airspace from Ukraine or Belarus. Police had earlier announced that an unidentified object had fallen in a field in the village of Osiny in eastern Poland's Lublin province, which borders Ukraine. "...after conducting preliminary analyses of radar system records, no violation of Polish airspace was recorded last night from either Ukraine or Belarus," the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said on X. "The information about the discovery of an object, which, according to preliminary assessments, may be a component of an old propeller engine, has been forwarded to the Air Operations Center – Air Component Command." The blast shattered windows in several homes, but nobody was injured, PAP news agency reported. Police officers found burnt metal and plastic debris at the site, it added. Air raid sirens rang out for about an hour over the border in Ukraine's Volyn and Lviv regions from around 2100 GMT, according to messages from its military posted on Telegram. There were no reports of air attacks in those regions, their governors said. Ex-Sabah minister fails to secure retrial of forgery case

Published on: Wednesday, August 20, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 20, 2025 By: V Anbalagan, FMT Text Size: Former Sabah minister Peter Anthony is currently serving a three-year prison sentence for forgery. (Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA: Convicted former Sabah minister Peter Anthony today failed in his bid to secure a retrial of his forgery charge after the Court of Appeal dismissed his application for a review, filed on March 14. Justice Azman Abdullah, chairing a three-judge panel, said there was no failure of justice regarding a police report lodged by prosecution witness Shukur Din, which was argued extensively in the final appeal last year. Advertisement '(Peter) was given the right to be heard. The application for review is rejected. 'The previous appeal bench's failure to include (Shukur's police report as fresh evidence) in its broad grounds does not amount to a failure of justice,' he said. Also on the panel hearing the review application were Justices Noorin Badarudin and Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz. On March 4, a Court of Appeal panel comprising Justices Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Zaini Mazlan and Azmi Ariffin delivered its broad oral grounds of judgment on Peter's appeal. The full judgment, written by Zaini and made available to parties early this week, explained why the fresh evidence did not help to exonerate Peter. Shukur had alleged that a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission investigating officer concocted the last paragraph of his police report to implicate Peter in using Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to mislead then prime minister Najib Razak into securing a contract. Peter contended that Shukur's police report on Aug 9, 2018 exonerated him. He said the non-disclosure of the evidence at trial had prejudiced him. The former state minister in the Warisan-led Sabah government between 2018 and 2020 contended that he was deprived of the right to a fair trial by not being able to cross-examine Shukur on the report. The Court of Appeal last year granted Peter's application to admit Shukur's police report as additional evidence, noting that he had only come across it through a friend. The former Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat president's review application had sought to set aside the Court of Appeal's final ruling convicting him of the offence, and for the ordering of a retrial. Earlier today, lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla, appearing for Peter, told the court that the 16-page broad grounds made no reference to the fresh evidence admitted. 'It was only stated in the 24-page judgment, which amounts to an afterthought,' said Haniff, who was assisted by lawyer Rosal Azimin Ahmad. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
