An investigation by BBC News Hindi has uncovered that the death toll from the Kumbh stampede in India's Uttar Pradesh state earlier this year was significantly higher than the official figure provided by the state government.
While the government reported 37 deaths, BBC's investigation confirmed at least 82 fatalities.
The BBC's inquiry involved interviews with over 100 families across 50 districts in 11 states, revealing that the number of casualties was far greater than what had been officially acknowledged.
The investigation also found that some families, whose loved ones perished in the stampede, were offered cash compensation of approximately $6,000 (₹500,000) but were excluded from the official death count.
BBC identified 26 such families who were omitted from the tally.
The findings have drawn sharp reactions from India's opposition political figures, including the Congress Party, which took to Twitter to accuse the Yogi Adityanath-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh of downplaying the true extent of the tragedy.
'The BJP government of UP had said that 37 people had died in the Kumbh stampede. However, the BBC investigation has confirmed the death of 82 people,' the Congress Party stated.
They further questioned why the government seemed more concerned with its image than with addressing the fatalities.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinet also raised concerns over the discrepancies in the reported death toll, stating, 'At least 82 people were killed in the Kumbh stampede. This number is much higher than the 37 deaths reported by the UP government.'
In response to the BBC's findings, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav also criticised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling BJP, calling the official death toll 'misleading.'
He questioned the credibility of the BJP leadership, stating, 'Facts vs Truth: 37 vs 82. Everyone must watch, listen, and understand the truth.'
Yadav further criticised the BJP, saying, 'Those who lie to conceal deaths cannot be trusted, nor should their supporters.'

Israeli strikes kill 35 in Gaza, many near an aid site, medics say

CAIRO: Israeli military strikes killed at least 35 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, most of them at an aid site operated by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation in central Gaza, local health officials said. Medical officials at Shifa and Al-Quds Hospitals said at least 25 people were killed as they approached the aid site near the former settlement of Netzarim, and dozens were wounded. Ten other people were killed in other Israeli military strikes in Khan Younis in the south of the enclave, they added. The Israeli military had no immediate comment. On Tuesday, when Gaza health officials said 17 people were killed near another GHF aid site in Rafah in southern Gaza, the army said it fired warning shots to distance 'suspects' who were approaching the troops and posed a threat. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday there had been 'significant progress' in efforts to secure the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza, but that it was 'too soon' to raise hopes that a deal would be reached. Israel strike on Lebanon kills two Despite efforts by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar to restore a ceasefire in Gaza, neither Israel nor Hamas has shown willingness to back down on core demands, with each side blaming the other for the failure to reach a deal. Two Hamas sources told Reuters they did not know about any new ceasefire offers. The war erupted after Hamas-led took 251 hostages and killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, in an October 7, 2023, attack, Israel's single deadliest day. Gaza rescuers say at least 10 killed in Israel strikes Israel's military campaign has since killed nearly 55,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to health authorities in Gaza, and flattened much of the coastal enclave.

Israel waging 'campaign to obliterate Palestinian life in Gaza': UN expert

Listen to article UN experts said in a report on Tuesday that Israel committed the crime against humanity of "extermination" by killing civilians sheltering in schools and religious sites in Gaza, part of a "concerted campaign to obliterate Palestinian life." The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel was due to present the report to Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council on June 17. "We are seeing more and more indications that Israel is carrying out a concerted campaign to obliterate Palestinian life in Gaza," former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, who chairs the commission, said in a statement. "Israel's targeting of the educational, cultural and religious life of the Palestinian people will harm the present generations and generations to come, hindering their right to self-determination," she added. The commission examined attacks on educational facilities and religious and cultural sites to assess if international law was breached. Israel disengaged from the Human Rights Council in February, alleging it was biased. When the commission's last report in March found Israel carried out "genocidal acts" against Palestinians by systematically destroying women's healthcare facilities during the conflict in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the findings were biased and antisemitic. In its latest report, the commission said Israel had destroyed more than 90% of the school and university buildings and more than half of all religious and cultural sites in Gaza. "Israeli forces committed war crimes, including directing attacks against civilians and wilful killing, in their attacks on educational facilities ... In killing civilians sheltering in schools and religious sites, Israeli security forces committed the crime against humanity of extermination," it said. The war was triggered when Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people in Israel in a surprise attack in October 2023, and took 251 hostages back to the enclave, according to Israeli tallies. Israel responded with a military campaign that has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities. Harm done to the Palestinian education system was not confined to Gaza, the report found, citing increased Israeli military operations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as well as harassment of students and settler attacks there. "Israeli authorities have also targeted Israeli and Palestinian educational personnel and students inside Israel who expressed concern or solidarity with the civilian population in Gaza, resulting in their harassment, dismissal or suspension and in some cases humiliating arrests and detention," it said. "Israeli authorities have particularly targeted female educators and students, intending to deter women and girls from activism in public places," the commission added
