Civic bodies are only following the meat ban imposed by Congress in 1988: CM
MUMBAI: Amid a backlash by Opposition leaders, as well as deputy chief minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar, over the ban on selling meat on Independence Day imposed by several municipal corporations in the state, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday that the 'directives issued by civic bodies was based on a similar order issued by the Congress government in 1988'. Nagpur: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis congratulates chess player Divya Deshmukh on winning the FIDE Women's World Cup 2025, during a press conference, in Nagpur, Monday, July 28, 2025. (PTI Photo)(PTI07_28_2025_000493A) (PTI) On Tuesday, while Pawar opposed the ban, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had released a copy of a government resolution (GR) of 1988, which was issued when Sharad Pawar (who was with Congress at the time) was chief minister of the state. On Wednesday, Fadnavis said while BJP supports citizens' freedom of choice in food, the 'ban is not the state government's decision, but has come from the municipal corporations of some cities'. 'The civic bodies have appraised me that the ban has been in practice for years, with the first GR being issued in 1988. Everybody has the right to live life as per the constitutional provision and the government does not want to interfere with it,' said Fadnavis. BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye posted the GR on X, stating: 'Aaditya Thackeray (Shiv Sena-UBT) and Jitendra Awhad (NCP-SP), who have been opposing the ban, should condemn Sharad Pawar (head of NCP-SP). Awhad and Thackeray were ministers in the Uddhav Thackeray government, which continued the ban, but uttered no word against it. I however have no doubt that deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, known for his command of the administration, would very well know that this decision is not by the Mahayuti government.' The row over meat ban erupted after the Kalyan Dombivili Municipal Corporation (KDMC) in Thane district directed the closure of meat shops on August 15, which was followed by civic bodies of Malegaon, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Nagpur.

Ganesh Mandals asked by CM to have ‘Operation Sindoor' as theme this year
MUMBAI: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday asked Ganesh Mandals in the state to have 'Operation Sindoor' as the theme for this year's pandals. He said the country has shown its strength to the world through this operation; hence, it needs to be showcased by the Ganesh Mandals to create awareness during the festival this year. Devotees carry an idol of Lord Ganesh for visarjan (immersion) in Mumbai. The 10-day long festival will end on Monday. (Kunal Patil/HT photo) The CM's urge comes at a time when the opposition has been blaming the PM Modi government for using 'Operation Sindoor' for their political benefit. 'The Ganesh Mandals should use this year's Ganpati Festival to create awareness about the strength India showcased to the world through 'Operation Sindoor' and the importance of using Swadeshi (indigenous) products,' Fadnavis said. 'The mandals should also display tableaux based on 'Operation Sindoor', dedicated to the soldiers.' He had called a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review security and other arrangements for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations that begin on August 27. Fadnavis appealed to the mandals to coordinate with the administration to celebrate the festival in an atmosphere of peace and enthusiasm. He then directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to grant a five-year permission to the sculptors involved in making Ganesh idols. 'Though their licenses will have to be renewed every year through the single-window system BMC had started,' he stated. He further instructed the BMC to increase the number of artificial lakes for immersion of idols and to add more boats along the seashore for immersing tall idols in deep waters. The state government has given Ganesh Chaturthi the status of a state festival, the CM said. Therefore, the state is implementing extensive planning to celebrate it on a large scale. All concessions provided to the Ganesh Mandals last year will also continue this year. 'While celebrating, proper adherence to the law must be ensured. Since Eid-e-Milad will also be observed during Ganesh Chaturthi this year, care should be taken to maintain communal harmony so that law and order are not disrupted anywhere,' he stressed. He also assured he would take steps to extend the permitted days for use of loudspeakers during the festival, as per the court directives. Fadnavis also asked the Ganesh Mandals to submit a written declaration to the BMC administration stating that their offices are not used for commercial purposes. After they do so, no property tax will be levied on their offices.

Maharashtra govt not interested in deciding who eats what: CM Fadnavis
MUMBAI: On a day the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation reiterated it would not withdraw its order to shut slaughterhouses and meat shops on Aug 15, more corporations - Kolhapur, Ichalkaranji, Nashik and Jalgaon - issued similar directives. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said the decision was not taken by the Mahayuti govt but by an earlier govt in 1988 and that everyone was free to eat what they wanted. "The state govt is not interested in deciding who eats what. We have lots of issues before us," he said when asked about opposition to the Independence Day slaughter ban. Protests have grown, with Dy CM Ajit Pawar also saying it wasn't right. Fadnavis said a govt resolution on slaughter bans on certain days was issued in 1988 and had been in force since. "Even I did not know about it till I read about it in the media," he said, calling the issue overblown. He said municipal corporations told him they take this decision every year, including when Uddhav Thackeray was CM. Referring to a remark by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut that the CM was making Maharashtra "impotent" with such a ban, Fadnavis said without naming him, "Some people have started calling those eating vegetarian food impotent. This foolishness must stop. Each one can eat what he wants. Our Constitution has given the right to everyone to live. " BJP chief spokesperson Keshav Upadhye said the policy was first implemented when Sharad Pawar was the CM, and asked if the opposition would question him.
